Chapter 096: The Imperial Court Debrief

The golden bells of the Grand Solaris Palace tolled ninety-nine times.

Inside the High Sun Imperial Throne Room, two hundred grand dukes, warmasters, and high astrologers stood in paralyzed silence along the polished marble nave.

Sunlight poured through the soaring stained-glass dome, illuminating the hundred-step golden dais where Emperor Aurelius sat upon the Sun-Flame Throne.

Every eye was fixed upon the bronze double doors at the far end of the hall.

The heavy doors groaned open.

Grand Inquisitor Drake walked down the red carpet alone.

His arrival sent a ripple of quiet panic through the imperial court.

Drake was the most feared enforcer in the empire, a legendary Tier 6 commander who had subdued three rebellions and severed the horns of the Abyssal Frost Dragon.

He was known for spotless white velvet capes, immaculately polished solar armor, and an arrogant stride that made sovereign princes bow their heads.

Today, Drake looked like a man who had crawled out of the heart of an erupting volcano.

His gold-plated breastplate was warped by unfathomable thermal heat.

The hem of his crimson cloak was charred to brittle black ash.

His prized sun-spear hung limp at his side, its enchanted tip cracked down the center, devoid of all spiritual light.

Worst of all were his eyes.

The fierce, predatory glare of the Grand Inquisitor was completely gone.

In its place was the hollow, haunted stare of a mortal who had looked directly into the open furnace of creation and realized he was made of dry straw.

Drake halted at the base of the golden dais.

He did not deliver the customary standing salute of the Imperial Inquisition.

Instead, he dropped heavily to both knees, pressing his forehead directly against the cold marble floor.

"Rise, Inquisitor," Emperor Aurelius commanded, his deep voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "Where is the fleet? Where are the twelve sky-dreadnoughts of the Golden Armada? Did the Radiant Dawn Academy surrender the Seventh Spire?"

Drake did not rise.

He remained face-down on the marble, his shoulders trembling beneath his scorched pauldron.

"The fleet has anchored at the southern frontier border, Your Imperial Majesty," Drake rasped, his voice raw and cracked. "Three dreadnoughts lost their mainmasts. Nine hulls suffered primary ward-core melt. We did not engage the enemy."

A chorus of furious gasps erupted among the warmasters.

General Kaelen, commander of the Imperial Sky-Knights, stepped forward with his hand resting on his gilded pommel.

"Insolence!" Kaelen barked. "You commanded twelve capital galleons, Drake! You had five thousand elite paladins and twenty solar ballistas! You retreated without firing a single volley at an unranked academy apprentice?"

"Hold your tongue, General," Emperor Aurelius said, raising a single gold-ringed hand.

The throne room fell instantly silent.

The Emperor leaned forward, his golden eyes narrowing as he studied Drake’s scorched armor.

"Tell me what happened at Solitude Spire, Drake," Aurelius said softly. "Omit nothing."

Drake slowly lifted his head.

Sweat beaded on his soot-stained brow as he looked up at the throne.

"Sire... the intelligence provided by the Academy Council was a lie," Drake whispered. "They claimed Solitude Spire was occupied by a lazy orphan squatter. They told us he was an unranked mortal who refused to pay his tuition fees."

Drake swallowed hard, his throat clicking in the quiet hall.

"There is no squatter on that peak," Drake said. "There is no mortal hermit. What sits upon that floating rock is the primordial hearth of the cosmos."

The grand dukes exchanged uneasy glances.

"Explain yourself," Aurelius ordered, his jaw tightening.

"We approached the Seventh Spire at high noon," Drake began, his hands clenching into fists against the stone. "We maintained standard tactical formation, locking our primary suppression barriers around the mountain. We broadcasted the Imperial Sovereign Writ, demanding his immediate surrender."

Drake closed his eyes, shuddering as if the memory itself burned his flesh.

"The resident did not emerge," Drake said. "He did not summon a barrier. He did not draw a weapon. He was sleeping in a woven hammock on the front porch."

General Kaelen scoffed. "He ignored the Imperial Writ?"

"He rolled over, General," Drake said, his voice dropping into a terrifying whisper. "He shifted his weight beneath a cotton quilt. And when he turned his back to us, his dantian exhaled."

Drake looked directly at the Emperor.

"A stray thermal prominence vented from his chest," Drake said. "He never launched an attack. He never used a technique. It was merely the ambient radiative leakage of a main-sequence star releasing a tiny fraction of excess fusion pressure."

The entire court went dead quiet.

"The prominence rose five thousand miles into the cloud ocean," Drake continued, his breath coming in shallow gasps. "Our flagship’s triple-layered solar wards shattered in zero point zero four seconds. The heat alone liquefied the bronze rigging of three dreadnoughts."

Drake pointed a shaking finger toward his cracked chestplate.

"I activated the Divine Sun-Mirror of the First Dynasty," Drake said. "An Emperor-grade defensive relic forged from ancient solar gold. It lasted two seconds before the mirror face turned into bubbling slag."

From the right side of the dais, Arch-Astrologer Vane hurried forward.

The ancient scholar was clutching a bundle of glowing brass parchment scrolls and a crystalline divination astrolabe that was spinning wildly out of control.

"Your Imperial Majesty!" Vane stammered, his spectacles slipping down his crooked nose. "The Inquisitor speaks the absolute truth! Our astral observatories recorded the anomaly four hours ago!"

Vane unrolled the brass parchment, projecting a shimmering golden hologram above the marble steps.

The hologram displayed the gravitational topology of the eastern floating spires.

Solitude Spire did not register as a floating island.

It registered as a blinding, spherical gravity well that bent space-time into a vortex.

"By the ancestral gods..." General Kaelen muttered, taking a step back as his face drained of all color.

"The localized mass density on that peak exceeds one full planetary mass," Arch-Astrologer Vane squeaked, trembling so violently his robes rustled. "His internal core temperature is fifteen million Kelvin! That is thermonuclear hydrogen fusion! Hydrostatic equilibrium locked to the subatomic decimal point!"

Vane looked at the Emperor with wide, terror-stricken eyes.

"Sire, if that young man takes a deep breath and lets his core expand by three percent, the entire Radiant Dawn Archipelago will be pulled into his personal orbit," Vane wept. "If he sneezes without his dampers on, our continent will drift into the sun!"

A heavy, suffocating dread settled over the throne room.

The warmasters who had demanded war minutes ago stood frozen, their battle plans feeling like children's scribbles before an impending meteor strike.

Emperor Aurelius stared at the swirling gravitational hologram.

His fingers tapped slowly against the armrest of the Sun-Flame Throne.

"Grand Inquisitor Drake," the Emperor said, his voice low and solemn. "What is your tactical assessment? Can the Imperial Legions contain him?"

Drake let out a bitter, exhausted laugh.

"Contain him, Sire?" Drake shook his head slowly. "To mobilize an army against him is not warfare. It is not even suicide."

Drake looked up into the Emperor's eyes.

"To war against him is to demand the sun extinguish itself."

The words hung in the air like a death sentence.

No one spoke.

No one dared breathe.

Emperor Aurelius closed his eyes, absorbing the crushing weight of the revelation.

Meanwhile, on Solitude Spire, the afternoon breeze blew through the pine needles.

It was 1:45 PM.

Felix Vance lay sprawled on his wooden porch recliner, wearing his faded hemp tunic and mismatched wool socks.

He let out a long, rumbling yawn that ended in a sleepy jaw crack.

"Ugh..." Felix mumbled, rubbing his scratchy belly. "Did someone turn the server volume up? Why was it so bright earlier?"

He propped himself up on one elbow, blinking blearily at the sunny yard.

Down near the garden fence, the former Ghost King was on his knees, meticulously picking crabgrass out of the clover patch.

The ancient undead horror had swapped his bone scythe for a rusty garden trowel. He was humming a quiet, mournful dirge while placing pulled weeds neatly into a wicker basket.

Near the stone well, the Thunder Gryphon was snoring loudly, its golden wings twitching in a dream about chasing sky-sheep.

On the cedar railing, Barnaby the clockwork owl stood frozen in his perch.

The thick black rubber stopper was wedged tight between his brass mandibles, holding a polished copper coin in place. His amber crystal eyes blinked once every sixty seconds, letting out a soft, rhythmic *tick... tick... tick...* that kept the entire porch feeling cozy and quiet.

Felix looked down at his feet.

A stray brown sparrow had landed on the edge of his porch railing, pecking loudly at a dried breadcrumb: *TAP! TAP! TAP!*

"Hey," Felix grunted, squinting at the bird. "Quiet hours. Some of us are trying to enjoy our post-breakfast nap."

The sparrow completely ignored him, pecking the wood even harder.

Annoyed, Felix reached down, grabbed his loose straw slipper from the floor, and gave it a lazy, underhand flick toward the railing.

He didn't put any real effort into it.

He just wanted to shoo the bird away so he could close his eyes again.

However, deep inside Felix's chest, his Sol-Class core shifted micro-fractions of an inch to compensate for his arm's movement.

A localized gravitational pulse surged down his sleeve.

The straw slipper left his fingers at roughly Mach forty.

*BOOM-CRACK!*

A sharp, whip-like sonic crack echoed across the peak as the slipper sheared through the sound barrier.

The vacuum displacement created a miniature vortex of compressed air that tore over the railing, obliterating the sparrow’s breadcrumb and blowing the bird fifty feet backward into a soft bush.

The kinetic shockwave didn't stop there.

It shot off the edge of the floating island, hurtling out over the cloud ocean.

Ten miles to the south, an empty academy cargo barge cruising through the mist caught the tail end of the sonic displacement.

The barge's auxiliary sail was ripped clean off its mast, spiraling down into the lower abyss like a leaf caught in a hurricane.

The crew aboard the barge screamed in terror, dropping to their knees and crying out to the gods for mercy.

Back on the porch, the slipper bounced harmlessly off the cedar planks and settled beside Felix's foot.

Felix picked up his AetherDeck from the side table, tapping the obsidian screen with a heavy thumb.

Felix stared at the quest prompt in utter disbelief.

"Twenty coins?" Felix muttered, rolling his eyes. "Twenty measly coins and a stick for sweeping the entire deck? That wouldn't even cover the stamina cost of picking up a broom."

He clicked `[ABANDON QUEST]` without a second thought.

"Garbage daily quests," Felix grumbled, tossing the AetherDeck face-down onto the table. "Unrewarding busywork designed to pad out active playtime. I'm not doing chores on my day off."

He slid his bare foot back into the warm straw slipper, leaned his head against the cushioned headrest, and pulled his straw hat down over his eyes.

"Wake me up when the devs add auto-complete tickets," Felix sighed.

Within ten seconds, his breathing slowed into a steady, peaceful rhythm, leaving the outside world to calculate the terrifying celestial meaning of his Mach-40 slipper toss.
