Ruth Danner brought the good screwdriver herself.
It had a yellow handle darkened by years of fingers, with the owner’s initials cut into its base. Finn reached for it before she had finished explaining which cupboard it came from.
“Bring it back with the end still square,” she said.
He inspected the blade. “It already isn’t.”
“Then bring it back no worse.”
Mara stood in the pump house’s dry entrance while they cleared the bench. The brass register remained where Ruth could reach it from the occupied sleeping areas. Tessa had asked to repair the small side housing beside its existing alarm terminal. Ruth had agreed after seeing the circuit drawing, then asked the six residents to choose which of their spare parts could leave the cupboard.
Nobody voted to give up the pump seal.
