Gideon found Devon at the service fence.
He was standing beside the water vehicle, bent over its open tailgate with a pencil in one hand. The coat lay on a sealed container. A second piece of paper had been tucked under the container’s carrying handle, its folded edge already pushed far enough beneath the plastic grip to hold during the trip.
“Leave that there,” Gideon said.
Devon looked up.
For an instant Mara thought he might run. He measured the space beside Gideon, then the distance to the gate. There was wet ground between them and the road, and Tessa had stepped into that gap carrying a wrench she had been using a minute earlier.
He put the pencil down.
“It’s just a message.”
Gideon asked the driver to stay where he was. Ruth came across the yard with the register under her arm, moving fast enough that Finn had to hurry to open the door ahead of her.
