Hester Quill didn’t begin with rhetoric. She began with mass, dimension, and chemical assay.
She stepped to the broad clerk’s table in the well of the court and laid down Exhibit A: the two-foot sheet of heavy royal thick parchment bearing the graphite rubbing of Tag #TAG-021-B4. Beside it, she placed Renn Tal’s hardened steel hair-width measuring tongs and the small glass vials containing the scrap shavings of the burst valve.
“Exhibit A,” Hester stated, her voice cutting through the silent hall like a diamond glass-cutter. “The original factory check tag attached to Blast Furnace Number Four. On the surface, struck with a counterfeit die, is Chief Checker Marcus Vaelen’s test. But beneath the surface, revealed by careful graphite rubbing under the Second Law of the Last Claim, sits Vaelen’s original lawful condemnation: REJECTED: THIN-WALLED CASTING. RELIEF BONNET DEFICIENT BY FIFTY PERCENT.”
Hester pointed her bone paper-knife at the ruby wax seal at the foot of the rubbing.
“And directly over that scraped condemnation sits the private signet of Director Tovin Crane. Three iron hammers bound in laurel leaves. Crane knew the valve was half-thickness. He knew it couldn’t hold ninety pounds of steam. But he signed an executive override to keep his furnaces pouring bridge heavy beams for the Sea-court.”
