Chapter 196: The Controlled Flash

There are explosions that shatter stone, explosions that level cities, and explosions that split planetary continents along tectonic faults.

And then there is the explosive expansion of fifty quintillion tons of superheated stellar plasma bouncing off an incompressible, degenerate neutron core at twenty thousand miles per second.

When Austin’s core flashed, the universe ceased to possess shadows.

A dome of pure, blinding white light erupted from behind his sternum. It surged through his heavy denim work shirt and his insulated void-suit, tearing outward into the vacuum of space at the speed of light. This blast was no ordinary fire. It hit like a solid wall of pure radiation pressure—five hundred exawatts of raw thermonuclear fury. The heat stripped electrons from heavy elements, shattered atomic bonds, and turned iron into a swirling, white-hot soup of naked nuclei and high-speed particles.

Standing on the central observation catwalk of the Geosynchronous Ring, Austin did not close his eyes.

Behind the dark glass of his Shade-14 welding visor, the explosion looked like the sudden opening of a massive blast furnace door. High-speed beta particles tore through the thin residual gases of the exosphere. The resulting blue glow bathed his five-foot drop-forged pipe wrench in an electric-cobalt light.

The expanding sphere of white-hot plasma, traveling outward at thirty-two thousand kilometers per second, hit the invisible magnetic wall forty-two thousand kilometers from the planet’s surface.

*WHUUUUMMMMM.*

There was no air in the void to carry acoustic waves, but the sheer electromagnetic shockwave vibrated through the structural steel framing of the Geosynchronous Ring with a force that made the sixty-foot I-beams ring like struck tuning forks.

The eight-million-tesla magnetic field from the ring’s superconducting stator coils gripped the charged plasma. Under the laws of magnetic force, the outward-expanding ions could not cross the closed field lines. Instead, the field whipped them into tight corkscrews. They slowed rapidly, compressing into an ultra-dense, glowing ring of blazing gas trapped directly inside the circumference of the ring.

Simultaneously, twelve thousand five-hundred-meter parabolic quartz mirrors—their reflective faces angled inward—caught the blinding flash of light.

They did not shatter. Coated with nine layers of dielectric zirconium and titanium oxides, and cooled by thousands of automated liquid-helium cryo-loops pumping at four Kelvin, the mirrors acted like a colossal spherical resonator. They reflected ninety-nine point nine eight percent of the photonic flux back inward toward the center of the magnetic bottle, creating a suffocating counter-pressure of radiation that pinned the expanding fireball firmly in place.

It was the ultimate industrial trap: a runaway supernova envelope, caught between an eight-million-tesla magnetic field and a twelve-thousand-mirror optical cage.

High on the central gantry, Austin leaned forward, both hands clamped firmly around the five-foot handle of his pipe wrench, his teeth gritted behind his visor as the crushing magnetic recoil force surged through the catwalk beneath his boots.

"Xuan Ming!" Austin roared over the direct comms line. "Engage the magnetohydrodynamic induction shunts! Bleed the plasma current down the elevator cables! Don't let the coil temperature exceed twelve Kelvin!"

Down at the central power switching station, Xuan Ming threw his entire weight onto the primary copper busway lever.

*CLACK-THUMMM.*

Twelve colossal superconducting circuit breakers, each the size of a locomotive, slammed closed in perfect, synchronized alignment.

The compressed plasma toroidal donut, spinning within the magnetic ring at twenty-four thousand miles per second, became the armature of the largest magnetohydrodynamic generator ever conceived in mortal history. Massive electromagnetic currents—one hundred and twenty billion amperes of direct current—were induced into the ring's stator windings.

Instantly, that massive river of electricity surged downward.

Down the twelve carbon-nanotube and titanium composite elevator cables, twelve colossal columns of brilliant golden-white electricity shot toward the planet below like the lances of twelve archangels.

From the surface of the planet, four billion citizens sheltering within the subterranean granite vaults looked through their monitoring crystals and saw twelve pillars of pure, liquid sun-fire descending from the heavens. The electrical energy did not arc wild or scorch the earth; it flowed smoothly through massive multi-million-ton copper busway grids embedded in the foundation spires, surging straight into the subterranean battery caverns where thousands of high-density molten-salt capacitors drank the torrent of power like thirsty deserts drinking a monsoon.

In the Great Yan Empire fallout shelter, Emperor Wu stared at the municipal voltage meters mounted along the vault wall.

The brass needle, rated for fifty thousand megavolt-amperes, swept smoothly past the redline, climbing into regions of the dial that had never been marked by mortal engravers. Emergency indicator lamps—thousands of them, wired through every corridor, every street, every granary, and every palace across four thousand miles of imperial territory—lit up with blinding, crystal-clear white radiance.

"The power..." Emperor Wu whispered, dropping to his knees upon the cold stone floor, tears streaming down his face beneath his yellow hard hat. "The Lord Architect has captured the fire of heaven... and poured it into our streetlights..."

Beside him, three hundred imperial elders broke into weeping, ecstatic hymns of praise, their hands held high toward the glowing concrete ceiling. Across the continent, in the Western Jade Lands and the Verdant Plains, millions of commoners danced in the illuminated vaults, marveling at the hum of endless, clean electricity pulsing through their homes.

Down on the lower scrap sorting deck of Dreadnought 01, former Sovereign Chen Tian and Elder Mo Fan were staring through the reinforced quartz cargo port, their jaws slack.

"By the Ancient Void..." Chen Tian whispered, his broom slipping from his fingers to clatter against the deck. "He did not merely survive the supernova... He did not merely contain the blast... He... he converted forty thousand years of cosmic cataclysm into high-voltage direct current to power tea kettles and streetlamps."

"And look at the gas, Sovereign," Mo Fan whimpered, pointing a trembling, clawed finger into the void. "Look at the condensation..."

Up on the orbital ring, the violence of the flash began to subside, shifting into a spectacle of stunning, mind-melting beauty.

The blinding white light softened, shifting through brilliant shades of violet, emerald, and molten gold. As the superheated plasma slowed within the magnetic bottle, something extraordinary occurred within the compressed gas.

Under temperatures exceeding five hundred million Kelvin and magnetic pressures exceeding eight million tesla, the rapid neutron-capture process—the r-process of stellar nucleosynthesis—was running at maximum, frenzied intensity. Free neutrons, liberated during the core bounce, were slamming into iron nuclei by the billions per second, driving nuclear masses up the periodic table and bypassing the iron stability valley entirely.

Right before Austin’s eyes, the glowing toroidal cloud was condensing.

Billions of tons of vaporized void-iron and stellar plasma were cooling, crystallizing, and precipitating out of the vacuum like golden snow. Massive, glittering nodules of pure, nine-times-refined immortal jade, chunks of solid stellar gold, veins of ultra-dense platinum, and glowing crystals of transuranic star-metal were forming directly within the magnetic trap, tumbling harmlessly through the zero-gravity field like a river of celestial diamonds.

Austin lifted his Shade-14 visor, letting out a long, ragged whistle of contractor appreciation.

"Well, look at that," Austin muttered, wiping a drop of sweat from his chin with the back of his canvas glove. "Good containment. Zero atmospheric blow-off. And look at all that scrap metal."

Beside him, Tie Kuang stumbled out of the dreadnought airlock, his jaw resting firmly against his chest armor as he stared through his clear helmet at the glowing, multi-colored river of heavy elements circling the ring.

"Austin..." Tie Kuang croaked, his hands trembling violently. "Is that... is that what I think it is? That golden glow... that violet sparkle..."

"It’s r-process nucleosynthesis," Austin said, pulling his carpenter’s pencil from behind his ear and clicking the button on his digital pyrometer. "When you compress an iron core collapse with eight million tesla, the neutron flux drives nucleosynthesis past the lead barrier. That’s about four billion tons of high-purity gold, nine hundred million tons of platinum-iridium alloy, and roughly six hundred million tons of crystalline star-jade."

Tie Kuang grabbed his own head in both hands, his eyes bulging. "Four billion tons of gold?! Six hundred million tons of star-jade?! That... that is enough wealth to buy thirty thousand cultivation empires! The ancient sects would slaughter each other for ten million years over an ounce of that jade!"

"It’s not wealth, Tie Kuang, it’s raw electrical busbar feedstock," Austin corrected, pointing his pencil at the glowing river. "Gold and platinum don't oxidize in low Earth orbit, and star-jade has three times the dielectric breakdown strength of synthetic sapphire. We're going to use that metal to forge the primary high-voltage busway for Season Nine’s deep-void transformer stations."

Austin turned around, looking down at his own torso.

The blinding violet halo that had crowned his shoulders for the past forty-eight hours was gone. The violent seventy-eight-G vibration in his spine had ceased.

In its place was something vastly deeper, vastly denser, and incomparably more terrifying.

Deep within his dantian, where his binary stellar cores had once danced, there now sat a single, perfectly spherical, pitch-black seed of matter, barely five kilometers in diameter, spinning at exactly twelve hundred revolutions per minute.

The Controlled Supernova Flash was complete.

And the Level 85 Capstone had officially unlocked.
