Chapter 111: Building the Coop

Morning mist drifted lazily through the jagged pines of Solitude Spire.

The seventh floating island hung suspended in the high skybox, completely isolated from the frantic morning drills of the Radiant Dawn Academy.

Up on the cedar porch of the dilapidated cottage, Felix Vance dragged himself out of his woven recliner at eleven o'clock sharp.

He rubbed his eyes with the heel of his palm, yawning until his jaw popped.

A gentle mountain breeze ruffled his loose hemp tunic and frayed straw slippers.

On the perch beam above the front door, Barnaby the clockwork owl stood frozen in place.

The brass automaton’s amber crystal eyes gleamed with frustrated intelligence.

Between his sharp brass mandibles, the heavy black rubber stopper Felix had installed back in Chapter 015 was wedged tight, clamping down on a polished copper coin tip.

Barnaby's internal clockwork gears hummed with a muted, rhythmic *tick... tick... tick...*

Deprived of his ability to screech pompous sunrise aphorisms about rising early to cultivate celestial Qi, the owl could only vibrate in silent, indignant protest.

Felix patted the owl's brass head with two fingers.

"Good bird," Felix murmured. "Quiet mornings are the true end-game content."

Across the porch, Lyra Ashford sat cross-legged on a polished cedar mat.

Her ancestral silver rapier rested across her knees, its mirror-bright steel catching the golden glow of the upper atmosphere.

She opened her eyes, taking a calm, measured breath as she completed her morning circulation.

"Good morning, Senior Brother," Lyra said softly, dipping her head in deep reverence. "The atmospheric ley lines are exceptionally calm today. Your presence radiates an aura of profound, immovable equilibrium."

"Yeah. The wind died down. Perfect sleeping weather," Felix said, walking toward the wooden railing.

He leaned both elbows on the weathered rail and looked out over the yard.

Down in the low grass, the garden patch was thriving.

In the center of the dark loam, the five-star Sun-Lotus Cabbage basked beneath the morning light, its twelve emerald leaves pulsing with gentle, honeyed warmth.

Lord Nether-Bane, the ancient skeletal Ghost King of the northern void, knelt among the furrows wearing his grease-stained hemp apron.

With trembling, surgical care, the skeleton held a tiny watering can over the cabbage roots.

Behind him, two translucent void corsairs in matching hemp aprons carried small wicker buckets of enriched soil, floating three inches above the clover to avoid leaving footprints.

Whenever a Corsair let a pebble clink against a bucket, the Ghost King spun his skull around, his hollow eye sockets flaring with frantic, silent terror as he checked to see if the porch had noticed.

Felix sighed in mild satisfaction.

The automated farming staff was working out nicely.

Then his eyes drifted toward the stone pathway connecting the cottage to the outhouse.

Splayed directly across the gravel was the Imperial Thunder Gryphon.

The ninth-tier apex predator lay flat on its side like a beached golden whale, taking up forty feet of prime lawn.

One massive feathered wing was draped carelessly over a blackberry bush, while its feathered hind leg twitched in deep, slobbery slumber.

Every fifteen seconds, the beast let out an earth-shaking snore:

*HRRRRRR-SNORK-KABOOM!*

A tiny puff of violet lightning spat from its curved beak, sizzling against the dirt and kicking up a cloud of fried gravel.

Felix stared at the overgrown bird with deep annoyance.

"Look at that thing," Felix grumbled. "Blocking the entire walking path. If I need to use the bathroom at night, I have to hurdle forty feet of lightning hazard."

Lyra’s amber eyes widened in profound contemplation.

"Senior Brother," she whispered, her heart quickening. "The Thunder Gryphon is an imperial war beast of supreme pride. For it to expose its throat and belly in your courtyard proves its spirit has been completely conquered by your sovereign majesty! Its slumber is an act of total fealty!"

"It's just an outdoor dog with bad manners," Felix corrected deadpan. "It has zero spatial awareness and it sheds feathers all over my slippers."

Felix reached into his pocket and pulled out the AetherDeck.

The palm-sized slate of cracked obsidian and brass filigree warmed instantly against his fingers.

He gave the center bezel a double tap, switching tabs from his stellar core physics sliders to the cozy agricultural suite.

Felix tapped his chin.

"Five hundred timber and two hundred cobblestones? That's dirt cheap," Felix said. "I've been hoarding offline wood since Tuesday."

He hovered his thumb over the green deployment button.

"A basic four-by-four wooden lean-to should do the trick," Felix muttered to himself. "Put some straw on the floor, give it a roof so the rain doesn't get on its beak, and keep it off my lawn path."

Felix tapped `[DEPLOY SHELTER NOW]`.

He dragged the little pixelated wooden shed icon across the virtual grid of Solitude Spire, dropping it neatly onto the rocky eastern ridge fifty paces past the cabbage patch.

A crisp chime echoed from the slate.

*Ding!*

Felix shoved the AetherDeck back into his tunic pocket, leaning against the rail to see if the game would render a small wooden doghouse.

For three seconds, nothing happened.

Then, the bedrock beneath Solitude Spire groaned with the deep, terrifying rumble of an awakening tectonic plate.

*THUUUUM.*

The mountain air instantly dropped ten degrees before rocketing into blistering, pressurized heat.

Down in the cabbage patch, the Ghost King dropped his watering can. The tin can clattered against the stones as the skeletal monarch fell flat onto his knees, his jaw rattling so hard his teeth clicked like castanets.

"The heavens..." Lord Nether-Bane choked, his spectral flames shivering inside his ribs. "The mountain's bones are reshaping!"

Lyra sprang to her feet, her hand flying to the hilt of her rapier.

Over on the eastern ridge, the solid granite split open with a sound like tearing silk.

Rays of blinding, golden-bronze light shot straight up into the cloud ceiling, punching a half-mile hole through the morning overcast.

From the fissure, massive pillars of Primordial Void Ironwood erupted toward the sky.

Each trunk was eight arm-spans thick, petrified by millions of years of cosmic pressure and veined with swirling veins of natural lightning lacquer.

The colossal timbers slotted together in midair with thunderous kinetic booms:

*CLANG! BOOM! CRACK!*

There were no carpenters. There were no nails.

Ancient, forgotten divine architecture wove itself into existence out of pure conceptual reality.

Bricks of Astral Star-Stone, glowing with deep midnight-blue luminescence, stacked themselves into towering walls thirty feet high.

Sweeping pagoda-style eaves curved out over the cliffs, tiled with iridescent dragon-scale shingles that caught the wind and chimed like cathedral bells.

Carved lintels depicted celestial beasts bowing before a blazing solar disc.

Vents along the base of the foundation hissed softly, releasing gentle plumes of heated aromatic cedar mist that smelled of sun-dried sandalwood and crushed spirit clover.

Within ten seconds flat, a grand, palatial Divine Beast Pavilion stood anchored into the granite cliffside.

It was larger than the main administrative hall of the Radiant Dawn Academy's Beast Menagerie.

It radiated an aura of ancient, primordial sanctuary—an imperial sanctum built to house mythical entities capable of sundering continents.

The dust settled, revealing a wide arched gateway paved with smooth river stones that radiated a gentle, soothing warmth.

A heavy silence descended over the spire.

The only sound was the soft, rhythmic ticking of Barnaby's clockwork chest on the porch beam.

*Tick... tick... tick...*

Lyra stood frozen at the railing, her rapier trembling in her white-knuckled grip.

Her chest heaved, her breath coming in shallow, disbelieving gasps.

"Void Creation..." she whispered, her eyes wide as moons as she stared at the glowing ironwood eaves. "Materialization of the Ancient Firmament... Senior Brother didn't simply construct a shed. He summoned an Emperor-grade Divine Beast Reliquary from the astral void!"

She turned toward Felix, her amber eyes burning with unbridled fanaticism.

"Senior Brother's benevolence knows no bounds!" Lyra thought, her internal monologue spiraling into ecstatic reverie. "He saw that the Thunder Gryphon bore the blood of the Ancient Sky Kings, yet was forced to sleep upon the common dirt. With a mere twitch of his finger, he reshaped reality to grant an imperial beast a roost worthy of the First Era! He is anchoring the spire's spiritual feng shui with a sacred menagerie!"

Down in the clover, the Ghost King and his corsairs were prostrating themselves against the dirt, their hemp aprons trembling against the soil.

"Lord of the Sun!" the Ghost King wheezed, bowing his skull into the weeds. "To forge such a temple in the blink of an eye! A sanctuary of absolute harmony!"

Felix stood at the porch rail, blinking through his messy bangs.

He stared at the sixty-foot-tall, pagoda-roofed, glowing star-stone fortress towering over his eastern cliff.

He pulled the AetherDeck back out of his pocket and squinted at the screen.

The screen showed a tiny, three-inch pixelated brown shed with a crooked wooden chimney.

Felix furrowed his brow, deeply unimpressed.

"What is with this asset scaling?" Felix muttered, rubbing the back of his neck. "Indie developers have zero concept of hitboxes. I ordered a basic wooden doghouse and the engine spawned a four-story barn."

He looked at the towering ironwood beams and the glowing dragon-scale tiles.

"Whatever," Felix said with an exhausted sigh. "At least the materials look weatherproof. If the game doesn't charge me extra maintenance fees for the square footage, I'm not filing a bug report."

He slipped the slate back into his pocket, took a sip of lukewarm tea from the Infinite Cozy Teacup on the side table, and stretched his shoulders.

"Hey, chicken," Felix called out toward the yard, pointing a lazy finger toward the grand palace on the cliff. "Your coop is done. Go sleep over there so I can walk to the outhouse without stepping on your tail."

The Thunder Gryphon’s golden ears twitched.

It slowly cracked open one glowing yellow eye. Felix rubbed his temple as he looked at the massive structure.

He focused his gaze on the arched entrance to see if the game had at least provided proper item stats.

A crisp black Inspector tooltip materialized in his vision:

【Item: Grand Pavilion of the Sovereign Roost】 【Grade: Ninth-Tier Primordial Sanctuary】 【Durability: Indestructible (Anchored to Spire Core)】 【Inspector Note: Intended as a cozy four-by-four chicken coop, but backend graphical scaling blew the dimensions out of proportion. Features underfloor geothermal heating, automated hay fluffing, and zero drafty gaps. Slightly excessive for an overgrown pigeon, but rent is free.】

Felix shook his head.

"Underfloor heating. Unbelievable," Felix grumbled. "Even the pixel livestock gets better central heating than my bedroom. This game's luxury creep is out of control."

Lyra stepped up beside him, her face bathed in the golden reflection of the pavilion's glowing eaves.

"Senior Brother," she said, her voice filled with hushed awe. "The spiritual aura emanating from those star-stone foundations... it is pure True Yang vitality. Any beast that rests within those halls will experience rapid marrow cleansing and lineage awakening. You have bestowed an incomprehensible fortune upon this mountain."

Felix gave her a tired, sidelong glance.

"Lyra, it’s a shed," Felix said flatly. "It has four walls and a roof. Its only job is to keep animal droppings off my front porch."

Lyra lowered her eyes, a knowing, profound smile touching her lips.

*'A shed,'* she thought to herself, her heart overflowing with reverence. *'He calls a ninth-tier sanctuary a mere shed! To a sovereign who holds a burning star within his soul, an imperial palace is no different than a stack of firewood. His detachment from worldly splendor is truly boundless!'*

Felix yawned again, the cool mountain breeze washing over his face.

"I'm going to make some toast," Felix said, turning back toward the cottage door. "If that bird doesn't move in ten minutes, poke it with a broom."

He shuffled into the kitchen, his straw slippers dragging softly against the cedar floorboards, leaving the legendary palace of divine beasts glowing quietly against the morning sky.
