Chapter 184: Mor'Ghulath's Existential Crisis

1,924 wordsUse ← / → keys to navigate

The command bridge of the *Ocular Devourer* smelled of ozone, burnt marrow, and sheer, undiluted panic.

Void Titan Mor'Ghulath stood motionless before the forward viewport, staring down at his smooth, armless shoulder.

He raised his remaining right hand, pressing his three jagged fingers against his chest.

Beneath the thick slate-gray skin, his primary and secondary hearts were hammering like frantic bronze pistons.

Yet his left arm was simply gone.

"Report," Mor'Ghulath rasped, his voice sounding dry as desert sand. "Check the astral perimeter. Look for residual spiritual intent. Look for spatial tears. Look for cursed blood-runes."

Behind him, three senior chronomancers knelt over the central scrying basin, frantically waving their trembling tentacles over the shimmering pool of mercury.

"Nothing, Lord Captain!" the chief chronomancer sobbed, his nautilus shell clattering against the copper rim. "The spiritual spectrometer detects zero spell resonance! There is no Yang fire! No Yin frost! No Heavenly Thunder! The local space-time fabric has zero curvature!"

"Then explain to me where my limb went!" Mor'Ghulath roared, though the roar lacked its usual world-crushing ferocity.

It sounded more like the terrified shriek of a cornered beast realizing that the rules of hunting no longer applied.

"Captain..." the chronomancer whimpered, holding up a floating slate of crystal glass. "The cosmic register has finalized the transaction. No blade severed your arm, and no star burned it. The universe simply ceased to recognize that the asset ever occupied memory space."

The chronomancer tapped the glass, projecting an ethereal line of text into the air:

`[System Status: Object <Mesh_Limb_Left_Arm_Halberd.fbx> Successfully Purged from Local Buffer.]`

Mor'Ghulath stared at the line of text.

His four vertical eyes blinked in unison, a cold, oily sweat dripping from the base of his obsidian horns.

For five million years, the Abyssal Void Fleet had traversed the dark oceans between realities.

They had crushed mortal kingdoms that built towers of steel.

They had annihilated immortal sects that summoned dragons of liquid flame.

They had even slaughtered ancient celestial gods who wrapped themselves in the light of distant nebulas.

All of those enemies had fought with power.

And power, by its very nature, could be quantified.

It had mass, velocity, temperature, and spiritual pressure.

If an enemy struck with ten million units of celestial fire, the Abyssal Armada simply met it with twenty million units of negative-mass void darkness.

Yet the entity sitting on the dilapidated wooden porch of Solitude Spire did not fight with power.

He fought with administrative privilege.

"He does not destroy..." Mor'Ghulath whispered, his colossal knees shaking so violently that the deck plates groaned beneath his weight. "He does not conquer. He un-declares."

The realization struck through his soul like a spear of absolute zero.

"If he chooses to strike us with an attack, our void shields might absorb a fraction of the impact," Mor'Ghulath continued in a trembling, hollow daze. "If he summons a solar flare, our dark-matter hulls could disperse the heat across our radiators. But what shield can defend against an entity who simply selects your coordinates and clicks delete?!"

Across the command bridge, fifty abyssal officers fell to their knees, their chitinous foreheads slamming against the grates.

"We are bugs on his ledger!" an adjutant wailed. "We are floating errors in his skybox!"

"Power down all weapons!" Mor'Ghulath suddenly bellowed, his single right arm sweeping across the control banks with frantic speed. "Power down the primary cannons! Extinguish the void-flame engines! Retract all boarding spikes! Do it now, you fools, before he decides the rest of our flagship is cluttering his hard drive!"

"Captain!" the chief gunner scrambled across the deck. "The targeting locks on our auxiliary cannons are still engaged on the lower spires—"

"Sever the cables with your teeth if you must!" Mor'Ghulath shrieked, kicking the gunner across the floor. "If a single stray spark drifts toward his cabbage patch, he will delete our entire quadrant from existence!"

Within ten seconds, the menacing, oily violet glow of the twelve colossal void dreadnoughts flickered and died.

Their ten thousand golden eyes shut tight, as if trying to pretend they were not in the sky at all.

The hum of their singularity engines fell silent, replaced by the quiet whistling of the mortal mountain wind.

Down in the Astral Observatory, Chancellor Valen stood frozen against the brass railing, his jaw hanging completely slack.

"The... the armada," Valen croaked, rubbing his eyes in utter bewilderment. "They... they shut down their engines?"

Beside him, Grand Marshal Vane-Talon took a leisurely sip of cool water from his wooden ladle, nodding in quiet approval.

"A sensible decision," Vane-Talon remarked in his calm, gravelly baritone. "The titan has realized what I learned during the War of the Seven Spires. When Senior Felix clears his throat, you do not raise your shields. You take off your boots, sit down on the grass, and pray he doesn't notice you."

Valen looked toward the Seventh Spire through the great telescope.

On the front porch, Felix Vance was sitting at the low cedar table.

Beside his elbow, the Sovereign Heart Seal table shim remained perfectly stationary, holding the table rigid against the wooden floorboards.

Felix had just opened a small ceramic jar of pickled cucumbers.

He used a pair of smooth bamboo chopsticks to lift a crisp, jade-green slice, popping it into his mouth.

*Crunch.*

The crisp acoustic snap echoed softly across the quiet courtyard.

"Mm," Felix murmured, chewing with deep, contented satisfaction. "Good acidity. Good crunch. Nether-Bane's brine recipe is really coming together."

He glanced down at the bottom corner of his AetherDeck screen.

A small notification icon was flashing with a gentle green glow.

Felix tapped five stars and hit [1. SUBMIT RATING].

"Fast turnaround," Felix remarked, picking up another cucumber slice. "Credit where credit is due. If all customer service desks worked like that, the gaming industry would be in a much better place."

He leaned back in his wicker chair, his eyes drifting lazily toward the sky.

Above the mountain peaks, the twelve darkened, silent void dreadnoughts were hovering like awkward black blimps, completely unsure of what to do next.

Felix tilted his head, his Inspector HUD flaring into focus over the massive silhouette of the *Ocular Devourer*.

【Target: Fleet Vanguard Flotilla (12 Vessels)】 【Commanding Officer: Void Titan Mor'Ghulath (Three-Armed Edition)】 【Current Threat Level: Zero (Completely Subdued / Terrified)】 【Engine Status: Cold Iron / Weapons Depleted】 【Inspector Note: The fleet has realized that existing within your line of sight is a high-risk gamble. They are currently debating whether to offer sacred tribute or throw themselves into the sun to avoid being uninstantiated. Sells for zero copper as scrap. Would make great shade awnings for the tomato trellis if broken down into poles.】

"Shade awnings for the tomatoes?" Felix muttered, shaking his head. "Too much manual labor. I’d have to get a ladder and bolt them to the fence. Forget it."

Beside the cedar table, Lyra Ashford stood frozen in a half-kneeling posture, her lilac eyes practically radiating blinding spiritual light.

She watched Senior Brother casually pop a slice of pickled cucumber into his mouth while dismissing twelve planet-crushing dreadnoughts as 'unnecessary manual labor.'

'He could dismantle their hulls with a thought...' Lyra’s soul shivered in holy, reverent awe. 'He could fashion divine awnings for his sacred vegetables from the armor of the Outer Dark! Yet he refrains! Why?! Because to build an awning requires effort, and effort implies attachment to material form! Senior Brother remains eternally unattached, existing in the pure, boundless expanse of the Great Slumber!'

She reverently lifted the porcelain teapot, pouring a thin, steaming arc of roasted barley tea into Felix's cup.

The tea, perpetually governed by the thermodynamic micro-gravity of Felix's dantian, settled at exactly sixty-eight-point-five degrees Celsius without a single splash.

"Senior Brother," Lyra whispered, her voice trembling with devotion. "Shall this disciple prepare the reception incense? When the demon titan descends to beg for mercy, should we allow him to step onto the lower porch?"

Felix paused mid-chew, looking at her with a blank stare.

"Reception incense? Lyra, what are you talking about? It's just a cucumber. Go finish your lunch before the rice gets cold."

Lyra bowed until her nose nearly touched the floorboards, her heart overflowing with gratitude.

'He tells me to eat rice...' she thought, tears of revelation prickling her eyelashes. 'He reminds me that mortal nourishment is the foundation of Dao cultivation! He cares for my health even while subduing an extra-planar invasion!'

Far above the porch, within the ring of the 108 captured Western dreadnoughts, hundreds of mortal sailors and artillery officers were leaning over their iron gunwales, pointing and laughing.

"Look at the big dark bug!" an artillery sergeant chuckled, biting into a fresh golden radish. "Shut down his engines! Turned off his cannons! Old Vrr'Ghul or whatever his name is looks like a kicked mule!"

"Told you," another soldier grinned, adjusting the fairy lantern wires on the rail. "Nobody messes with the boss's cabbage. You touch the cabbage, you lose an arm. Basic physics."

Down in the Astral Observatory, Chancellor Valen had already summoned three Master Historians, their silver brushes flying across scrolls of golden vellum.

"Record this!" Valen ordered in a frantic whisper, pacing across the copper balcony. "On this day, the twelfth cycle of the Seventh Firmament, the Vanguard Armada of the Void Sovereign arrived with twelve moon-devouring vessels. The Senior Sovereign of Solitude Spire consumed one pickled cucumber, submitted an edict of deletion to the Heavenly Dao, and extinguished the titan's primary limb without rising from his chair! Addendum: the dreadnoughts are currently behaving as decorative garden ornaments!"

Down in the courtyard below the porch, Lord Nether-Bane stepped back from the Sun-Lotus Cabbage patch, holding his iron garden rake over his shoulder like a ceremonial halberd.

The ancient Ghost King looked up at the silent, darkened void fleet, then looked at Felix’s peaceful profile.

"Lord Captain," the lead spectral corsair whispered, wiping dirt from his clean hemp apprentice apron. "Shall we prepare the compost buckets? The space lobsters have ceased their shouting."

"Aye," Nether-Bane replied with a grim, knowing grin that split his skeletal jaw. "Rake the gravel smooth. When the master finishes his cucumbers, those demons will be lining up at the gate with tribute. Make sure the welcome mat is swept clean."

Up on the roof beam, Barnaby the Clockwork Owl puffed out his polished brass feathers.

The black rubber stopper in his beak was firmly seated, and his copper tip glinted brightly in the noon light.

*Tick... tock... click.*

The chronal escapement inside the automaton pulsed in flawless atomic harmony with the white dwarf companion core rotating within Felix’s dantian.

Eighteen hours per revolution.

Zero microsecond drift.

Absolute mathematical stability.

High above the clouds, Void Titan Mor'Ghulath was hurriedly ordering his officers to open the deepest vaults of the flagship's treasure hold.

He knew that if he did not present an acceptable offering before the entity on the porch finished his afternoon snack, the next bug ticket might delete the entire fleet.
