Chapter 213: Astrologers' Mass Hysteria

1,664 wordsUse ← / → keys to navigate

In the three-thousand-year history of the Astral Observatory of Aethelgard, no single afternoon had caused more senior astrologers to question their sanity.

The great circular observation dome was filled with the smell of burning parchment.

In the center of the hall, Royal Astrologer Primus—an ancient man of four hundred and twenty winters whose beard dragged along the floorboards—was feeding armfuls of calfskin scrolls into an open brazier.

"Grand Master! Stop!" an apprentice cried, lunging forward to catch a burning parchment. "That is the Ten-Thousand-Year Star Calamity Codex! You spent three centuries calculating those orbital apocalypse trajectories!"

"Trash!" Primus bellowed, his voice cracking with hysterical laughter. "All of it, worthless dung! For three centuries I calculated the angular velocity of the Blood-Fang Star! I predicted the exact year of planetary doom! I warned five generations of emperors to dig deep caves!"

Primus shoved another stack of astronomical ledgers into the roaring fire.

"And what happens?" Primus cackled wildly, tossing his velvet scholar cap into the flames. "The Sovereign of Solitude leans over the armrest of a porch chair with a poultry duster! A poultry duster! *Flick!* And fifty miles of primordial iron becomes a garden ornament!"

Across the dome, eighty senior astrologers sat slumped against brass astrolabes, their eyes glassy and unblinking.

Some were staring at their chalk calculation slates.

Others were weeping quietly into their silken sleeves.

At the master scrying pool, Vice-Chancellor Morgana was being fanned with a palm leaf by two terrified scribes.

She had already fainted twice in the past twenty minutes.

Every time she opened her eyes and saw the newly formed rainbow meteor belt glittering peacefully outside the glass dome, her eyes rolled back into her head once more.

"The crescent..." Morgana muttered in a delirious trance, her fingers twitching against her lap. "The gravitic shear line was three atoms thick. Zero heat generation. Zero atmospheric turbulence. Pure, elegant, dismissive mathematical perfection."

Chancellor Valen was the only person in the room still capable of standing upright, though his knees were knocking together inside his embroidered robes.

He walked over to the scribe table, slamming his palm onto the polished mahogany.

"Cease your weeping and listen to me!" Valen commanded, his eyes burning with fanatic fervor. "The old astrology is dead! The stars no longer govern our fate! The Sovereign of Solitude governs the stars!"

The room fell dead silent, save for the crackling of Primus's burning scrolls.

"From this day forth," Valen declared, pointing toward the ceiling aperture, "we do not predict cosmic calamities. We observe the Sovereign's domestic routine! If the Sovereign cleans his dish, we record it as the Grand Purification! If the Sovereign reclines to the left, the southern constellations shall prosper! If he reclines to the right, the northern winds shall bring harvest!"

Thirty scribes frantically picked up fresh wooden tablets, dipping their brushes in gold-leaf ink.

"Title the new chronicle!" Valen shouted. "The Book of the Sovereign's Household Harmony! Volume One: The Dismissal of the Calamity Star by the Sacred Feather Whisk!"

Down in the lower libraries, scholars were already composing twenty-four separate theological treatises analyzing the wielder's arm angle.

Did the Sovereign sweep with a forty-five-degree wrist rotation to honor the forty-five spirit gates of heaven?

Or was it a seventy-two-degree arc designed to suppress the seventy-two earthly fiends?

They would debate the posture for the next eight hundred years.

Through the imperial communication array, a shimmering gold projection of Emperor Aurelius manifested in the center of the observatory.

"Chancellor Valen!" the Emperor's projection bellowed, his crown askew and his face flushed with imperial jubilation. "We watched the Calamity dissolve from the Dragon Spire! The Western Sky Empire has officially declared the Day of the Golden Whisk! By imperial decree, every household in forty provinces shall receive a state-funded golden broom! All citizens shall ritually sweep their front doorsteps every morning at dawn to channel the Sovereign's celestial hygiene!"

Down on the cedar porch of Solitude Spire, the initial effects of the decree had already arrived.

At the bottom of the garden fence, fifty imperial freight wagons had dumped three thousand gold-plated goose-feather dusters in a glittering mound.

Lord Nether-Bane stood beside the pile, leaning on his trusty iron rake with an expression of profound disgust on his skeletal face.

He picked up one of the ornate golden dusters, flicked it against a turnip leaf, and watched the soft golden tines bend completely out of shape.

"Absolute garbage," Nether-Bane grunted, tossing the golden duster back onto the heap. "Gold is far too soft for proper garden maintenance. You hit one stubborn thistle with this thing, and the whole handle buckles. Mistress Lyra, what are we supposed to do with three thousand gold brooms?"

Lyra Ashford walked past, carrying a basket of dried plums to the golden tether winch.

"Use them as bean poles, Groundskeeper," Lyra replied with a gentle smile. "The runner beans appreciate the support, and the gold does not rust in the rain."

Nether-Bane’s eye sockets sparked with skeletal glee.

"Bean poles," Nether-Bane chuckled, his jaw clattering merrily. "Now that is practical wisdom. High-grade imperial gold to keep the pole beans off the mud. The Master would be proud."

Up in the orbital void, thirty miles above the weeping scholars, golden bean poles, and burning books, Felix Vance had absolutely no idea he had just rewritten three millennia of astronomical science.

He was sitting comfortably in his wicker recliner, tapping his foot to the gentle rhythm of the AetherDeck's background music.

His virtual golden carp had just been reeled in.

A sparkling notification banner unfurled across the screen:

Felix grinned, tapping [2. SELL TO VENDOR] to pocket the digital gold.

"Eleven point seven milliseconds," Felix whispered, his face glowing with pure, unadulterated gamer joy. "I knew it. That speck on the dish rim was bouncing the packets. A clean dish is a happy dish."

He reached into the pocket of his violet void-silk robe and pulled out a small cloth pouch.

Inside the pouch were the dried mountain plums that Lyra had sent up earlier via the golden tether basket.

He selected a plump, dark purple plum, dusted with a fine layer of sour sugar.

He popped it into his mouth.

The combination of intense mountain tartness and rich, honey-sweet nectar exploded across his taste buds.

Felix leaned back against the linen pillow, chewing slowly with half-closed eyes.

"Man," Felix sighed in deep contentment. "Lyra really knows how to pick fruit. These plums are phenomenal."

He looked over the side of his recliner.

Outside his personal five-yard comfort envelope, the cosmic void was dead, cold, and soundless.

Below his woven footrest, the great continent of Aethelgard looked like an emerald and sapphire marble set into a velvet blanket.

The newly formed rainbow ring of cosmic ice dust encircled the upper atmosphere, sparkling like a collar of crushed opals.

An Inspector HUD tooltip hovered above the glittering stardust trail:

【Cosmic Feature: The Sovereign's Debris Ribbon】 【Composition: 400 Trillion Metric Tons of Vaporized Void Ice and Sugar-Coated Stardust】 【Scientific Significance: The remnants of a world-ending extinction event, neatly shredded into decorative holiday tinsel by a casual wrist flick】 【Mortal Perception: The Seven Spire Academies have declared an annual seven-day national holiday known as 'The Day of the Holy Whisk'. Sweeping one's front porch on this day is believed to grant longevity and immunity from lightning strikes.】 【Inspector Note: You just wanted to see your fishing bobber clearly. Now mortal civilization worships brooms. Next time, consider using an old sock so they can worship footwear instead.】

Felix read the tooltip and let out a soft snort of amusement.

"The Day of the Holy Whisk?" Felix chuckled, adjusting his straw hat. "People in this game will turn literally anything into a holiday event. But hey, if it gives the NPCs a reason to hand out free snacks, who am I to complain?"

He reached down to pat the brass head of Barnaby the clockwork owl.

Barnaby sat obediently on the wooden footrest, the rubber stopper snug in his beak, his internal gears clicking with steady, therapeutic regularity.

Beside the orbital chair, the three Abyssal Star-Whales glided through the stardust ribbon.

They opened their colossal mouths, filtering the sweet, ionized ice crystals through their baleen plates, singing their deep twenty-two hertz gratitude into the void.

The low-frequency hum resonated through Felix’s wicker chair, providing a gentle, motorized back-massage effect that eased every trace of tension from his shoulder blades.

"Free massage chair," Felix murmured, his voice thick with impending slumber. "Great Wi-Fi. Free dried fruit. Best idle game session of my life."

He tapped the AetherDeck screen one final time to engage the offline sleep timer:

【Offline Progression Timer: Set for 4 Hours】 【Auto-Catch Rate: 100%】 【Background Notification Chimes: MUTED】

The screen dimmed to five percent brightness, glowing like a gentle nightlight against his lap.

He pulled the brim of his straw hat all the way down until it touched his collarbone.

His breathing settled into the slow, steady rhythm of absolute indolence.

Thirty miles below, the mortal realm sang hymns to the Holy Whisk and planned grand seasonal festivals.

Up in the quiet orbit, shielded by five yards of seventy-degree air, Felix Vance crossed his legs, folded his hands across his stomach, and let the rhythmic song of the star-whales carry him back down into the sweet, bottomless depths of a midday nap.
