Chapter 136: The Draconic Rescue Fleet

Three leagues above the middle strata, the upper atmosphere was turning the color of bruised slate.

Seventy-two colossal storm wyverns hovered in formation behind the thunderheads, their eighty-foot wings beating a rhythmic, muffled cadence.

Each wyvern was an ancient, scarred veteran of the Western Heavens.

Their sapphire scales crackled with pale blue plasma, and their serrated horns were wrapped in braided war-banners dipped in astral silver.

At the head of this grim armada stood Great Elder Ao-Zhen, the Supreme Marshal of the Azure-Storm Council.

Ao-Zhen did not take the form of a beast; he stood upon the snout of the lead wyvern as an imposing, seven-foot draconian elder.

He wore heavy dragon-bone lamellar armor, and his twin lightning antlers pulsed with grim, mournful voltage.

In his gauntleted hand, Ao-Zhen clutched a shattered resonance crystal.

The crystal was supposed to pulse with the glorious, mountain-shaking battle roars of their supreme monarch, the Azure Dragon Sovereign, Ignis-Azureus.

Instead, the crystal had fallen completely dead.

Zero roars.

Zero shockwaves.

Only a terrifying, unnatural void of absolute silence.

"It has been three days," Ao-Zhen said, his deep baritone trembling with restrained fury and despair. "Three days since our Sovereign descended to purge the trespassing mortal demon of Solitude Spire."

Beside him, Elder Ku-Lei, the High Inquisitor of the Azure Courts, bowed his scaled head in grief.

"The silence is total, Great Elder," Ku-Lei rasped, his draconic eyes rimmed with red. "Our heralds reported that our Sovereign's celestial presence vanished beneath that mist-covered ridge like a stone dropped into the Abyssal Void."

"We all know what that means," Ao-Zhen whispered, his knuckles creaking as he tightened his grip on his halberd.

A shudder rippled through the gathered wyverns.

"The ancient texts warned us of the Human Fiend," Ku-Lei said, his voice dropping to a horrified whisper. "They do not merely kill their foes. They flay the divine dragon scales to forge low-grade defensive tunics! They drain the dragon marrow to brew mortal longevity grog! And the dragon heart... they roast it over coarse coals!"

The seventy-two Elder Wyverns let out low, mournful whines that sounded like grinding millstones.

To these ancient, noble beasts, their Sovereign was the living incarnation of the storm.

The thought of their glorious ruler strapped to a wooden butchering bench, having his sacred sinews pulled out while a cackling mortal demon stirred a cauldron, tore at their very souls.

"We will not allow our King to be consumed," Ao-Zhen swore, raising his halberd toward the darkening heavens. "Even if the human is a Primordial Void Fiend who eats stars for breakfast, the Azure Council shall breach his demonic lair!"

"For the Sovereign!" the elders hissed through sharpened fangs.

"Seventy-two wyverns, form the Nine-Fold Heaven-Breaching Arrow!" Ao-Zhen commanded. "We strike the central spire at maximum dive velocity! We rescue our Sovereign's remains—or break his chains before the final sacrifice is completed!"

Down on Solitude Spire, the morning was progressing at its usual tranquil pace.

A cool autumn drizzle pattered against the cedar eaves, producing a rhythmic, soothing whisper.

*Pitter... patter... pitter...*

Beneath the eaves, the two-hundred-ton Abyssal Storm-Slate eviction tablet lay tilted at an exact four-degree angle.

The sacred imperial draconic runes inscribed upon its surface acted as flawless drainage channels.

Every drop of rainwater that struck the porch roof was smoothly gathered, routed across the ancient thunder glyphs, and deposited neatly into the drainage trench near the vegetable patch.

Zero muddy water reached the porch floorboards.

Over on the cloud-silk hammock, Felix Vance shifted his straw hat down over his eyes, crossing his ankles in comfortable contentment.

His woven straw slippers rested neatly on the dry porch boards, safely out of reach of the damp weather.

Beside the hammock sat the low cedar tea table.

Under its short front leg, Grandmaster Vivienne's purple Sovereign Heart Seal held the table completely level against the damp mountain wind.

On top of the cedar table, the radiant Soul-Pearl served as an immaculate paperweight.

It held down Felix’s messy, handwritten sheets of loose paper, which detailed the mathematical probability of pulling a limited-edition SSR water-element radish spirit on a 0.6% banner rate.

Right next to the paperweight rested the white porcelain Infinite Cozy Teacup.

The fragrant Nine-Sun mountain tea inside emitted a steady, gentle plume of steam, locked at precisely 68.5°C by its internal enchantment.

Up on his brass wall perch, Barnaby the clockwork owl stood as still as a statue.

The thick black rubber stopper jammed firmly between his brass mandibles held the copper tip clamped shut, keeping his mouth entirely plugged.

Deprived of the ability to screech unsolicited motivational lectures, Barnaby's amber crystal eyes gleamed with sullen resignation.

Inside his brass chest, his chronal gears clicked away with hypnotic precision:

*Tick... tick... tick.*

Down in the garden patch, the scene was one of peaceful agricultural labor.

The five-star Sun-Lotus Cabbage was spreading its broad, golden-emerald leaves beneath the gray sky.

Its passive thermodynamic field bathed the garden in a constant, balmy sixty-nine degrees Fahrenheit, keeping the frost far away from the soil.

Lord Nether-Bane, the former Ghost King of the northern void, stood between two raised beds with an iron garden rake in his skeletal hands.

His bleached bone frame was neatly draped in a stained hemp apron tied with twine.

"Mind the trench edges, boys," Nether-Bane instructed his two spectral corsairs, his jawbone clicking with quiet authority. "The Master appreciates straight furrows. If a single drop of muddy drainage overflows onto the giant white radishes, I will make you polish every pebble along the garden path."

"Understood, Lord Captain," the lead corsair replied, wiping his spectral brow as he pushed a wooden wheelbarrow filled with dark, nutrient-rich leaf mulch.

Over in the newly expanded luxury roost, the Thunder Gryphon was curled into a massive golden ball on a bed of fresh pine shavings.

Its massive beak tucked beneath its left wing, the gryphon let out a long, rumbling snore:

*Chirp... snore... puff.*

A tiny ring of pale violet ozone drifted out with every exhale, floating upward through the cedar rafters before dissipating into the damp air.

Lyra Ashford stepped out of the kitchen, carrying a fresh plate of toasted sesame rice crackers.

Her silver-trimmed robes were neatly pinned, and her high-noble bearing had softened into the quiet grace of a seasoned household administrator.

She glanced at the hammock, her lips curving into a respectful smile.

"Senior Brother Vance," Lyra murmured softly. "The morning tea is holding at the optimal thermal threshold. Should I prepare the dried plum compote for your eleven-o'clock snack?"

Felix didn't open his eyes from beneath his straw hat.

"Just leave the crackers on the table, Lyra," Felix said, his voice thick with comfortable drowsiness. "And don't let Nether-Bane rake too loud. The gravel crunching is throwing off my sleep cycle."

"Of course, Senior Brother," Lyra replied, setting the plate down beside the Soul-Pearl with exquisite care.

Suddenly, a strange, low-frequency hum began to vibrate through the upper atmosphere.

It wasn't a sudden roar.

It was the terrifying, coordinated pressure of seventy-two Elder Wyverns diving in tight battle formation from ten thousand feet above.

The gray drizzle directly above Solitude Spire was blown aside by a descending wall of atmospheric pressure.

Through the parting clouds, seventy-two massive blue shadows plunged like falling meteors, surrounding the perimeter of the peak in a cage of crackling azure lightning.

The wind howled, flattening the grass outside the whitewashed cedar fence.

Lyra’s breath caught in her throat.

She spun around, her eyes widening as she took in the terrifying sight of the draconic fleet.

"The Elder Council of the Azure Heavens..." Lyra whispered, her face draining of color. "Those are the Seventy-Two Primordial Wardens. Every single one is a beast of the Calamity Rank, capable of boiling inland seas with a single sweep of their tail!"

Her mind raced at lightspeed, the classic Ashford noble over-analysis instantly kicking into high gear.

*They have arrived in full funeral-assault formation!* Lyra thought, her pulse hammering against her ribs.

*Look at the silver war-banners tied to their horns! In the ancient texts of the Western Dragon Courts, silver banners are flown only when an army rides out to avenge the murder of their monarch!*

*They believe Senior Brother Vance has slain their Sovereign!*

*They believe Solitude Spire is a charnel house where divine blood has been spilled!*

*They have come to wage an apocalyptic blood-feud, ready to detonate their own dragon cores to drag this entire floating peak into the void!*

Lyra turned toward Felix, her hands instinctively moving to form a protective talisman array.

"Senior Brother!" Lyra cried out, her voice taut with urgency. "The Azure Dragon Armada has surrounded the spire! They have bound their souls to an ancestral death-pact! They seek vengeance for their King!"

On the hammock, Felix let out a deep, annoyed sigh.

He pulled the straw hat off his face and rubbed his temples with both hands.

"Can nobody in this zone just use a doorbell?" Felix grumbled. "Why does every single visitor need to drop out of the sky at Mach 3? The wind is going to knock the teacup over."

Felix reached into his pocket and pulled out his obsidian AetherDeck.

He tapped the glossy glass surface to wake the display.

A glowing notification box popped up over his screen:

Felix squinted at the screen, then glanced up at the circling wyverns.

He tapped the screen again, summoning his Inspector HUD.

A translucent blue appraisal tooltip appeared over Great Elder Ao-Zhen, who was glaring down from the lead wyvern with halberd raised and eyes blazing with sacrificial rage:

【Target: Great Elder Ao-Zhen】 【Class: Azure-Storm Council Marshal】 【Current Mental State: Tragic Heroic Delusion】 【Primary Motivation: Convinced his King is currently being skinned alive on a cutting board behind the woodshed.】 【Emotional Level: 100% Prepared to Die in Glory】 【Inspector Note: An elderly draconic bureaucrat suffering from severe catastrophizing. Prone to overly dramatic monologues about honor and blood debts. Extremely loud. Highly susceptible to reasonable explanations, though his hearing is somewhat impaired by ancient pride.】

Felix stared at the tooltip, blinking slowly.

"Skinned alive behind the woodshed?" Felix muttered under his breath, shaking his head. "Who has the stamina to skin a three-mile-long lizard? That sounds like three hours of unskippable quick-time events. My wrist hurts just thinking about it."

Up in the stormy sky, Great Elder Ao-Zhen slammed the butt of his halberd against the wyvern's saddle, sending a deafening shockwave rolling across the clearing.

"Demon of the Solitude Spire!" Ao-Zhen roared, his voice trembling with heroic despair. "We know what horrors you practice within that cursed cottage! Return our Sovereign, even if it is only his bones! Or prepare to drown in the wrath of seventy-two dragons!"

Felix looked at Ao-Zhen.

Then he looked at the roof of his cottage.

Then he looked back at Ao-Zhen.

Felix rubbed his chin, a mild frown creasing his brow.

"Wait," Felix said aloud, his deadpan voice carrying effortlessly across the windy porch. "Do they seriously not see him?"

Ao-Zhen froze mid-roar.

The seventy-two wyverns blinked in unison, their battle chants sputtering out into confused silence.

"What insolence do you speak, demon?!" Ao-Zhen barked, his halberd trembling. "Do you mock our grief?!"

Felix pointed a single, lazy finger toward the top of the cottage.

"He's literally right there," Felix said flatly. "And you guys are making enough noise to wake up the whole mountain. Keep it down."
