Chapter 137: The Moss-Scraping Sovereign

Great Elder Ao-Zhen gripped his halberd, his scaled knuckles turning white.

He glared down from the head of his battle wyvern, refusing to be deceived by the mortal's casual pointing.

"A cheap diversion!" Ao-Zhen hissed through his teeth. "You think the Marshal of the Azure Court can be swayed by hand gestures? What foul illusion have you projected upon that rooftop?!"

Beside him, Inquisitor Ku-Lei narrowed his slitted reptilian pupils.

He channeled his ancient Dragon-Gaze, burning away the mist and drizzle to peer directly at the ridge of the cottage roof.

Then, Ku-Lei’s jaw dropped.

The high inquisitor’s breath hitched in his throat with a dry, wheezing squeak.

"Great... Great Elder..." Ku-Lei stammered, raising a trembling claw. "Look at the western chimney gable."

Ao-Zhen frowned in deep annoyance and shifted his gaze.

Sitting casually atop the mossy cedar roof of Solitude Spire was an imposing, indigo-robed figure.

He possessed the sweeping, iridescent sapphire horns of pure draconic royalty.

His fingernails were tipped with razor-sharp azure talons that could slice through celestial steel like wet parchment.

Around his neck hung the ancestral storm-crest of the Western Heavens.

It was, without a shadow of a doubt, their glorious, invincible monarch: the Primordial Azure Dragon Sovereign, Ignis-Azureus.

However, the mighty ruler was not clad in his world-conquering astral armor.

Instead, a faded linen handkerchief was tied snugly around his royal forehead to keep the drizzle out of his eyes.

Tucked into his silk sash was a small, triangular iron paint scraper with a chipped wooden handle.

The great monarch was currently sitting flat on his scaled behind, leaning forward over a steep section of damp shingles.

*Scrape... scrape... scrape.*

With delicate, surgical precision, the Dragon King slid the metal blade beneath a dense patch of green velvety roof moss.

He peeled the moss away in a clean, satisfying strip, lifting it up and placing it neatly into a small cedar bucket resting between his knees.

Then, he inspected the bare wood beneath, nodding to himself with deep, craftsman-like pride.

"A clean edge," the Sovereign whispered softly. "Zero shingle gouging. Captain Nether-Bane will be thrilled. This will make excellent organic matter for the winter turnip beds."

Up in the stormy sky, seventy-two ancient battle wyverns forgot how to beat their wings.

Several of them lost altitude by fifty feet before frantically catching themselves with clumsy wing-flaps.

Great Elder Ao-Zhen rubbed his eyes with his gauntleted claws, wondering if an ancient soul-poison had compromised his optic nerves.

"Sovereign...?" Ao-Zhen whispered, his voice cracking like dry bamboo. "Is... is that truly you?"

The Sovereign didn't immediately answer.

He carefully deposited another scrap of moss into the cedar bucket, wiped the scraper on his linen apron, and blew away a speck of cedar sawdust.

Only then did he slowly turn his head toward the seventy-two colossal war beasts hovering in battle formation above the yard.

The moment Ignis-Azureus saw the drawn halberds, the lightning-charged horns, and the funeral banners, his expression curdled into pure, unadulterated horror.

His sapphire eyes widened until they nearly popped out of his skull.

He didn't roar.

He didn't summon the wrath of the heavens.

Instead, the Dragon Sovereign dropped flat against the damp roof tiles like a terrified lizard.

He raised both hands frantically, pressing an azure-scaled index finger violently against his lips:

"SHHHHHH!" the Sovereign hissed, his voice an agonizingly tight stage-whisper that carried the panic of a man defusing an active bomb. "Shut up! Shut your foolish mouths! Clamp your beaks shut right this instant!"

Ao-Zhen and Ku-Lei blinked in total bewilderment.

"My Lord!" Ao-Zhen cried out, dropping his halberd to his side in distress. "You have been ensorcelled! The demon has bound your divine soul with foul mortal sorcery! Fear not, the Azure Fleet will lay down our lives to sunder your chains!"

"I said SHUSH, you brainless lizard!" the Sovereign snarled in a frantic whisper, his scales flushing a furious shade of violet. "Douse those lightning horns! Lower those wings! If you flap those gale-force gusts one more time, you're going to blow the cedar shingles clean off the eaves!"

The Sovereign cast a terrified glance down toward the covered porch.

Down in the cloud-silk hammock, Felix Vance merely shifted his position, rolling onto his side with a quiet groan.

He pulled his straw hat down tighter over his ears, entirely uninterested in the draconic drama unfolding fifteen feet above his nose.

Up on the roof, the Sovereign let out a long, shuddering sigh of profound relief, wiping a bead of cold sweat from his scaly brow.

"Praise the Heavens," Ignis-Azureus muttered to himself. "The Master is still in idle mode. If you fools had triggered his active aggro radius, we would all be flattened into paving stones."

Ao-Zhen and Ku-Lei cautiously glided down, landing their massive boots on the gravel pathway outside the whitewashed fence.

They stepped through the garden gate, their dragon-bone armor clanking softly.

Both elders approached the edge of the cottage, staring up at the roof with heartbroken confusion.

"Sire," Ku-Lei pleaded, dropping to one knee upon the gravel. "What is the meaning of this? Why are you perched upon the mortal's roof with a rusted gardening implement? Where is your world-shattering pride?!"

The Sovereign glared down from the ridgepole, holding his scraper like a sacred scepter.

"World-shattering pride?" the King hissed. "You callow fools know nothing of the Great Dao! You think power is about roaring into the sky and shooting lightning at clouds like an undisciplined hatchling?!"

Ao-Zhen blinked. "Is... is it not?"

"Of course not!" the Sovereign snapped, leaning over the cedar gutters. "Look at this roof! What do you see?!"

Ao-Zhen and Ku-Lei looked up at the cedar shingles.

"We see... damp cedar wood, Sire," Ao-Zhen said hesitantly. "And some dead leaves."

"Fools! Blind, ignorant lizards!" the Sovereign scolded them in an aggressive whisper. "This roof is the primary atmospheric barrier protecting the Sovereign Vance during his divine slumber! Beneath these very shingles rests the center of the celestial cosmos!"

The Sovereign tapped a cedar shingle with the flat edge of his iron scraper.

*Tap, tap.*

"Moss retains moisture," the King explained, his eyes burning with terrifying, self-taught conviction. "Moisture breeds wood-rot. Wood-rot leads to micro-fissures in the structural matrix! If an autumn rain penetrates these shingles and a single drop of water lands on the Master's forehead while he is running his idle cultivation simulations... do you know what happens?!"

Ao-Zhen swallowed hard, his throat suddenly bone-dry. "What happens, Sire?"

"The Master will be annoyed!" the Sovereign declared with absolute dread. "He will sigh! He will tap that black glass tablet of his, and a localized gravitational singularity will invert the atmospheric pressure of the entire Western Sky!"

Ku-Lei gasped, clutching his chest.

"Furthermore," the Sovereign continued, a smug, enlightened grin spreading across his reptilian face, "this is not mere manual labor. This is the highest tier of passive cultivation!"

The Sovereign gestured grandly to the warm cedar tiles beneath his belly.

"Feel the shingles, Ao-Zhen. Go on, put your claw against the wood!"

Hesitantly, Great Elder Ao-Zhen reached up and laid a massive, scaled palm against the lower edge of the roof overhang.

His draconic eyes widened instantly.

The cedar shingles were not cold and damp like the surrounding autumn mist.

They were warm.

A steady, deep, rhythmic pulse of solar heat vibrated through the wood fibers, radiating a pristine, golden energy that soaked directly into Ao-Zhen's dragon marrow.

It was pure, unadulterated Main Sequence stellar warmth.

It dissolved the centuries of damp rheumatic chill accumulated in Ao-Zhen’s ancient joints within three seconds flat.

"By the Ancestors..." Ao-Zhen breathed, his jaw slackening. "This... this is not ordinary cedar! The wood is infused with the primordial warmth of a newborn sun!"

"Exactly!" the Sovereign beamed proudly, scraping another thumbnail-sized clump of moss with exquisite care. "The Master's core passively heats the entire spire! By lying directly upon the roof shingles to scrape moss, my royal meridians are being cleansed by seventy-degree radiant solar energy!"

The King held up his small cedar bucket of moss.

"And when I finish this roof section, Captain Nether-Bane lets me trade the bucket for three sun-dried golden raisins and half a roasted sesame cracker! Do you have any idea how high the spiritual density of those crackers is?! It took my storm core three hundred years of seclusion to gain what one sesame cracker provides in twenty minutes!"

Over on the porch steps, Lyra Ashford dipped her jade brush into her inkpot, her heart overflowing with boundless reverence.

*Senior Brother Vance’s psychological conquest is absolute,* Lyra wrote in her sect journal, her eyes shimmering with profound enlightenment.

*He did not wage war against the Azure Sovereign.*

*He did not strike him with celestial thunderbolts.*

*Instead, he conquered the Emperor of Dragons by granting him the sacred privilege of roof maintenance!*

*He humbled a beast of the Primordial Calamity into a humble shingle-keeper, teaching him that the true preservation of the cosmos begins with clearing the mold from the eaves!*

*This is the Dao of the Universal Caretaker!*

Down on the hammock, Felix Vance let out another drowsy yawn.

He opened one eye beneath his straw hat, staring up at the roofline where three ancient dragon lords were huddled together, whispering furiously over a bucket of garden moss.

Felix pulled his obsidian AetherDeck out of his pocket and tapped the screen.

He brought up his Inspector HUD to see why his cottage roof looked like an overcrowded reptile enclosure.

【Target: Ignis-Azureus (Azure Dragon Sovereign)】 【Current Activity: Enthusiastic Shingle Maintenance】 【Progress: 84% Moss Cleared from Western Gables】 【Work Ethic: Exceptional (Motivated purely by roasted sesame crackers and warm roof tiles)】 【Inspector Note: A massive mythical predator that has successfully transitioned into a dependable exterior handyman. His giant claws make delicate scraping difficult, but he compensates with immense enthusiasm and zero labor costs.】

Felix glanced past the King toward the two elderly dragon marshals standing on the gravel.

【Target: Great Elder Ao-Zhen & Inquisitor Ku-Lei】 【Status: Rapidly Collapsing Cognitive Paradigm】 【Current Understanding: Convinced that scraping roof mold is a sacred 9th-Tier Divine Ascension Ritual.】 【Inspector Note: Two elderly military officers currently undergoing severe worldview re-calibration. Highly recommend leaving them alone before they try to eat the cedar shingles.】

Felix rubbed his face, letting out a heavy, deadpan sigh.

"Man," Felix muttered, slipping the AetherDeck back under his pillow. "The AI pathfinding on these flying lizards is completely broken."

He grabbed his white porcelain Infinite Cozy Teacup from the low table, taking a quiet sip of the warm Nine-Sun tea.

The hot liquid trickled down his throat, soothing his grogginess.

"Hey, blue guy," Felix called out softly toward the roof.

The Sovereign froze instantly, his iron scraper hovering two inches above a shingle.

He scrambled down to the eaves, peering over the edge with the desperate eagerness of a golden retriever hoping for a treat.

"Yes, Venerable Master Vance?!" the King whispered reverently. "Is my scraping angle too aggressive?! Did the cedar dust disturb your divine meditation?!"

Felix waved a lazy hand toward the seventy-two wyverns still hovering in the cold rain above the trees.

"Tell your friends to stop hovering in the clouds," Felix said flatly. "They're blocking the natural daylight, and all that whispering sounds like a punctured inner tube. If you're going to clean the roof, do it quietly."

The Sovereign’s face lit up with radiant joy.

"At once, Master Vance! It shall be done with absolute silence!"

The King scrambled back up the ridgepole, turning to glare down at his bewildered elder council with terrifying draconic majesty.

"You heard the Master!" the King hissed sharply. "Land your beasts, wipe your claws, and pick up a scraper! We have six more rows of shingles before lunch!"
