The autumn drizzle grew colder as the morning dragged on.
A damp mountain fog drifted across Solitude Spire, coating the cedar trees and grass blades in icy condensation.
Up on the roof, the Azure Dragon Sovereign was still happily scraping moss, completely insulated by the solar warmth radiating through the shingles.
Down in the lower clearing by the fence, however, the seventy-two Elder Wyverns were having a miserable time.
Despite their Calamity-Rank status and eighty-foot wingspans, they were still reptilian beasts of the upper atmosphere.
Cold, wet drizzle was the natural enemy of any creature with scales.
Their azure scales had dulled to a murky slate-gray.
Their great leathery wings were folded tightly against their ribs, shivering with violent, rhythmic tremors.
*Clack-clack-clack-clack.*
The sound of seventy-two sets of ancient, razor-sharp fangs chattering uncontrollably echoed across the garden like a room full of wooden castanets.
Even Great Elder Ao-Zhen and Inquisitor Ku-Lei were shivering in their dragon-bone armor.
Their breath emerged as pale, freezing plumes of mist, and their draconic tails curled tightly around their ankles to preserve body heat.
"G-Great Elder..." Ku-Lei chattered, his jaw rattling so hard he nearly bit his own tongue. "The ambient dampness... is infiltrating our ancestral meridians. If we remain stationary in this mortal mist... our joints will freeze solid."
Ao-Zhen grit his teeth, trying to summon an internal aura of storm lightning to warm his flesh.
*Zzzzt... pop.*
A pathetic blue spark sputtered between his antlers, immediately snuffed out by the damp mountain air.
"Endure it!" Ao-Zhen hissed through chattering teeth. "We are the proud wardens of the Western Skies! We do not complain about a light autumn chill!"
Over on the covered porch, Felix Vance swung his legs out of the cloud-silk hammock.
He slipped his feet into his dry straw slippers and stretched his arms toward the wooden rafters, letting out a long, luxurious yawn.
Beside the hammock, the low cedar table stood rock-solid on its legs, firmly stabilized by Grandmaster Vivienne's purple Sovereign Heart Seal jammed underneath.
On top of the table, the Soul-Pearl paperweight glowed with soft, soothing light, keeping Felix’s banner pity calculation sheets from fluttering away.
Felix picked up his white porcelain Infinite Cozy Teacup.
The Nine-Sun tea inside was still emitting a delicate swirl of steam, locked at precisely 68.5°C.
*Slurp.*
The warm liquid warmed Felix's chest, washing away the last remnants of his morning nap.
Then, Felix heard the noise.
*Clack-clack-clack-clack.*
Felix walked to the porch railing and looked out over the front lawn.
He blinked in deadpan disbelief.
Seventy-two massive, eighty-foot dragons were clustered together in a giant, pathetic pile in the mud, shivering like soaked stray cats outside a convenience store.
"Man," Felix muttered, shaking his head. "Look at those hitboxes. Cold-blooded mobs suffer a forty percent movement speed debuff in wet weather. If they freeze to death on my lawn, their collision boxes will never despawn."
Beside the toolshed, nestled against the retaining wall, sat a relic from an earlier era.
It was an enormous, thirty-foot-long livestock trough carved from a single slab of primordial basalt granite.
Originally placed there by the mountain's previous cultivators centuries ago, it had long since filled with stale rainwater and fallen pine needles.
Felix set his teacup down on the porch railing and pulled out his obsidian AetherDeck.
He tapped the screen to open his dantian management interface.
Deep within Felix’s abdomen, his 1.0-Earth-Mass Sol-Class stellar core was casually idling along at three million degrees Celsius.
To Felix, venting heat wasn't an ancient martial technique; it was standard computer maintenance.
"System," Felix muttered, tapping the utility sub-menu. "Reroute ten percent of the secondary core waste heat through the peripheral plumbing loop."
A clean Unicode prompt flashed across the dark glass screen:
Felix walked over to the shed, picked up a spare coil of flexible copper tubing, and carried it toward the stone trough.
With a lazy flick of his wrist, he cleared out the old leaves and murky rainwater with a tiny localized gravitational vacuum.
*Fwoooosh.*
The stagnant water vanished into the drainage ditch.
Then, Felix connected one end of the copper pipe to the outdoor mountain spring spigot and laid the other end into the clean basalt basin.
He allowed a microscopic trace of his stellar core's radiative thermal bleed to flow down his arm and into the copper tube.
*Hssssssssss!*
Instantly, fresh mountain spring water began pouring out of the copper nozzle.
It wasn't freezing runoff.
It was crystal-clear, mineral-rich water heated to an exact, steaming 104 degrees Fahrenheit.
Thick, fragrant white plumes of steam billowed out of the trough, carrying the soothing aroma of hot volcanic minerals, cedar oil, and fresh spring water.
In less than three minutes, the thirty-foot basalt basin was overflowing with bubbling, steaming hot spring water.
The heat was so intense and pure that the damp autumn chill within twenty yards was instantly obliterated.
Felix stepped back, wiping his hands on his trousers.
He tapped his AetherDeck to inspect the finished installation with his Inspector HUD:
【Item: Repurposed Basalt Hot Spring Trough】 【Water Temperature: 104.0°F (40.0°C)】 【Mineral Composition: High-Density Celestial Sulfur & Solar Jade Runoff】 【Effects: Dissolves Chronic Rheumatic Chill, Cleanses Draconic Marrow, Restores Scale Luster (+25% Shine)】 【Inspector Note: A massive outdoor livestock trough converted into a high-efficiency reptilian basking spa. Highly therapeutic for cold-blooded creatures experiencing seasonal affective disorder.】
Felix looked over at the seventy-two shivering wyverns.
"Hey," Felix called out, waving a casual hand toward the steaming basin. "There's hot water over here. Go soak if you're cold. Stop clicking your teeth together, it's driving me crazy."
Great Elder Ao-Zhen stiffened in sheer horror.
"A trap!" Ao-Zhen gasped, backing away a step. "Look at that bubbling cauldron! The fiend has prepared a vat of scalding brine! He intends to parboil our scales so they slip easily from our flesh!"
Up on the roof, the Sovereign stopped his scraper and poked his head over the eaves.
"Ao-Zhen, you absolute donkey!" the King yelled down, his voice cracking with exasperation. "The Master just built you a luxury hot tub with his own two hands! If you don't get your scaly butt in that water right now, I'm demoting you to garden compost duty!"
Inquisitor Ku-Lei, whose lips had turned completely blue from the cold, couldn't take the dampness anymore.
He crept forward on trembling claws, sniffing the rising steam.
"It... it smells like celestial sulfur..." Ku-Lei whimpered. "Not butcher's brine."
Ku-Lei extended a single azure claw, gingerly dipping the tip of his talon into the steaming water.
*Sssssssss.*
The moment the 104-degree mineral water touched his scale, Ku-Lei’s draconic soul nearly left his body.
A wave of pure, unadulterated, bone-melting warmth shot straight up his claw, through his elbow, into his shoulder, and exploded into his core.
The centuries of deep-seated frost accumulated from soaring through the icy upper stratosphere vanished in less than a heartbeat.
His scales, which had been tight and aching, expanded with a soft, supple click.
Ku-Lei’s eyes rolled back in pure ecstasy.
"Ancestors of the Western Sky..." Ku-Lei groaned, his voice dissolving into a pathetic, dreamy purr. "It's... it's heaven..."
Without another second of hesitation, the ancient Inquisitor threw his halberd onto the grass and dove headfirst into the trough.
*SPLASH!*
Seventy-two ancient war wyverns watched their terrifying high inquisitor submerge himself up to his snout in the steaming water.
Ku-Lei floated on his back, his claws limply paddling the surface, his wings draped lazily over the stone lip like wet towels hung out to dry.
*Chuff... purrrr... hiss.*
A low, deep, rhythmic draconic purr vibrated through Ku-Lei’s chest, bubbling through the water like an outboard motor.
The seventy-two Elder Wyverns lost every shred of military discipline.
"MOVE ASIDE!"
"LET ME IN!"
"MY WINGS HAVE BEEN FROZEN SINCE YESTERDAY!"
With frantic squeaks and scrambled clawing, seventy-two massive dragons descended upon the thirty-foot trough like a pack of oversized iguanas fighting for the best spot on a heat rock.
The trough was large, but it could not hold seventy-two eighty-foot beasts at once.
However, the overflowing 104-degree water had pooled into the surrounding gravel and low hollows, transforming the entire western yard into a series of shallow, steaming hot-spring lagoons.
Within sixty seconds, the clearing was completely filled with dragons.
Wyverns were piled three-deep in the trough, their massive snouts resting on each other's backs, their eyes closed in blissful, comatose stupor.
Others lay sprawled in the steaming puddles, stretching their wings across the warm flagstones and sighing plumes of fragrant sulfur vapor into the autumn air.
Great Elder Ao-Zhen stood alone on the grass, his pride struggling against the overwhelming wave of soothing radiant heat.
Then, a warm splash of mineral water hit his shin.
The agonizing ache in his thousand-year-old knee joint vanished instantly.
Ao-Zhen’s halberd slipped from his fingers, clattering harmlessly onto the wet grass.
"Just... five minutes," Ao-Zhen whispered to himself, his knees buckling. "Solely for reconnaissance purposes."
Ao-Zhen waded into the trough, squeezing his seven-foot armored frame between two comatose wyverns.
The 104-degree water enveloped his chest.
*Hssssssss.*
Ao-Zhen let out a breath he felt he had been holding for eight hundred years.
His divine dragon marrow, long congested with astral frost and ancient battle scars, began to hum with vibrant, golden vitality.
The pure solar energy infused within the water was performing a deep, cellular marrow-cleansing that no medicine pill could ever replicate.
*The Nine-Solar Marrow-Transmutation Bath...* Ao-Zhen realized, tears of overwhelming shame and joy mixing with the hot mineral water on his cheeks.
*The ancient scriptures spoke of this! A bath prepared by the Celestial Ancestors to purify the souls of divine beasts!*
*And we... we accused him of building a butcher's cauldron!*
*He did not seek to flay us... he sought to cure our arthritis!*
Up on the porch, Lyra Ashford lowered her jade brush, her hand trembling with profound realization.
*Senior Brother Vance has pacified an entire draconic armada without shedding a single drop of blood,* Lyra wrote, her handwriting exquisite and reverent.
*The Azure Council arrived with seventy-two war-horns, ready to incinerate the heavens.*
*Yet Senior Brother Vance simply opened a warm water valve.*
*He understood that the greatest weapon against rage is not steel, but absolute, paralyzing comfort!*
*By submerging their warlike intent in a bath of solar bliss, he has transformed seventy-two engines of destruction into purring pond carp!*
*This is the Dao of Complete Domestic Pacification!*
Down on the flagstones, Felix Vance took another sip of his Nine-Sun tea.
He glanced out at the yard.
Seventy-two massive calamity-grade beasts were currently floating motionless in the steaming water, purring like giant scaly kittens, completely dead to the world.
The annoying chattering of teeth had stopped entirely.
In its place was a peaceful, synchronized chorus of low reptilian snores:
*Snore... chuff... bubble.*
Felix nodded in quiet satisfaction.
"Much better," Felix murmured, leaning against the porch post. "Zero noise complaints. If only raid bosses in other games were this easy to keep quiet."
He pulled his straw hat down, closed his eyes, and drifted back into his morning nap.
