Chapter 219: The Golden Tether Freight Network

The only flaw with living thirty miles in the air was the delivery logistics.

Felix Vance reached into his cedar snack basket, feeling his fingers brush against the bare woven wicker bottom.

The steamed red-bean buns were gone.

The jar of pickled mountain radishes was empty.

Only three lonely dried plums remained at the bottom of the pouch.

Felix chewed one of the plums slowly, staring at the empty basket with a look of profound, tragic melancholy.

"Out of snacks," Felix sighed, his voice echoing in the seventy-degree comfort bubble. "And Lyra only sends the elevator basket up twice a day because cranking the manual winch takes twenty minutes of arm stamina."

Felix Vance hated waiting for deliveries.

Back in his past life, if food delivery took longer than thirty-five minutes, he would pace back and forth in front of the door checking the digital courier tracking map every forty seconds.

Up here in the orbital heavens, waiting four hours for a single plate of dumplings was an unacceptable compromise to his quality of life.

He picked up the AetherDeck and navigated to the [Orbital Infrastructure] tab.

He tapped on the icon representing the golden superconducting tether running down to Solitude Spire.

An Inspector HUD tooltip materialized before his eyes:

【Infrastructure Component: Golden Superconducting Grounding Tether】 【Current Bandwidth Utilization: 0.001% [Pure Energy Transmission Only]】 【Unused Capacity: 99.999% Superconducting Magnetic Slipstream】 【Logistical Inefficiency: Player must wait four hours for junior sister to hand-crank food baskets】 【Inspector Note: You have an indestructible four-lane magnetic hyper-conduit connecting your porch to the planet, and you are using it like a bucket on a rope. Unlock the automated freight conveyor, you lazy glutton.】

Felix nodded in full agreement with the tooltip.

"A bucket on a rope," Felix scoffed. "Medieval. Primitive. Let us see what automated logistics options we have."

He tapped the [Logistics Expansion] button on the AetherDeck.

A clean, modern interface unfolded:

[SYSTEM PERK ACTIVE]: Endless Refreshments
STANDALONE HOST
AETHERDECK LOGISTICS CONSOLE: AUTOMATED FREIGHT CONVEYOR

[ACTIVATE FREIGHT GRID] [CANCEL]

Felix selected [1. Porch Snack Express] and checked the box for [2. Planetary Commercial Grid].

"If I open the outer lanes for planetary trade, the NPC merchant guilds will keep the tracks maintained for free," Felix murmured with the cold, calculating thriftiness of a veteran city-builder player. "Public-private partnership. Classic infrastructure optimization."

He pressed [ACTIVATE FREIGHT GRID] with a firm tap of his thumb.

*SHUUUUUUM.*

Along the thirty-mile golden tether, four distinct magnetic guide-rails ignited in bright, shimmering colors.

Two upward tracks glowed sapphire blue.

Two downward tracks glowed warm amber.

The frictionless magnetic field expanded outward, connecting the Seventh Spire’s central anchor directly into the eight concentric orbital tracks of the newly aligned sky-continents.

Down on the surface of Aethelgard, the mortal world witnessed the birth of the greatest trade revolution in recorded history.

For thousands of years, international commerce between the eight continents was a deadly, perilous gamble.

Merchant galleons had to brave kraken-infested oceans, hurricane-force wind tunnels, and bandit sky-pirates.

A shipment of delicate winter melons from the southern valleys took eight months to reach the northern imperial capital, by which time seventy percent of the fruit was rotten mush.

Now, as the golden magnetic highways locked into the atmosphere, a small wooden cargo crate loaded with melons in the Southern Spire’s orchard drifted into the glowing amber slipstream.

*ZOOOOOOM.*

Without a single sail or drop of fuel, the crate shot along the frictionless magnetic rail at four hundred miles per hour.

It glided up the golden tether, bypassed three atmospheric layers in eighty seconds, and arrived at the northern markets chilled, dewy, and smelling as fresh as if it had been plucked five seconds ago.

In the Great Merchant Hall of the Western Sky Empire, the Guildmaster of the Golden Scales dropped his jade abacus onto the floor.

"Travel time between the seven seas..." the Guildmaster choked, his fat cheeks quivering with delirium. "Twenty minutes. Twenty minutes from the furthest desert to the imperial docks! Shipping insurance costs have dropped to zero!"

Within forty-eight hours, seventy thousand merchant galleons, trade skiffs, and cargo barges were happily gliding along the golden slipstreams.

They followed the strict traffic rules automatically projected into their helm crystals by the AetherDeck:

`Speed Limit: 450 MPH` `Keep Left for Slow Cargo` `Porch Express Lane Reserved for Lord of Solitude Snack Couriers: VIOLATORS WILL BE VAPORIZED`

Nobody dared violate the snack lane.

When a rogue sky-pirate captain from the Outer Rim attempted to steer his armed frigate into the Porch Express Lane to shave five minutes off his journey, eighteen dreadnought moonlets decloaked directly across his bow.

Grand Marshal Vane-Talon's face appeared in a massive, terrifying golden holographic projection above the pirate’s helm.

"Mortal scum!" Vane-Talon bellowed, his saber rattling in its sheath. "You have encroached upon the Sacred Porch Line! A basket of chilled honey melons is currently in transit! If your filthy exhaust fumes alter the melon's ambient temperature by zero point one degrees, I shall atomize your lineage down to the third cousin!"

The pirate captain immediately threw himself prostrate upon the helm floor, weeping in terror as he reversed his thrusters at maximum emergency burn.

Down in the central plaza of the Radiant Dawn Academy, Chancellor Valen stood atop the marble pavilion, spreading his arms toward the sky.

"The Golden Silk Road of Heaven!" Valen cried out to ten thousand cheering disciples. "The ancient sages spoke of the Great Unity! Sages dreamed of uniting the eight continents for ten thousand years! And today, the Sovereign of Solitude has done it... with an automated conveyor track so seamless that a warm dumpling can cross the world before the steam dissolves!"

"Glory to the Seventh Spire!" the merchant cartels roared, tossing gold coins into the fountains. "Glory to the Master of Logistics!"

Beside the cabbage patch, a sleek bronze hopper sat over the upward blue magnetic rail.

Lyra Ashford placed a lacquered wooden tray containing a freshly cut, chilled melon and a pot of hot jasmine tea into the hopper.

She pulled a small silver lever.

*Click.*

The magnetic rail caught the tray.

With a smooth, silent *whoosh*, the tray rocketed up the golden tether at the speed of an arrow, wrapped in a protective seventy-degree inertial dampening envelope.

Lyra looked up at the sky, smiling warmly.

"Transit time: forty-two seconds," Lyra noted softly. "The Senior Brother will not have to endure warm melon."

Beside her, Lord Nether-Bane was leaning on his iron rake, watching three hundred commercial sky-barges glide across the distant horizon like an endless train of golden ants.

"Well, look at that," Nether-Bane chuckled, his jaw clacking happily. "The Master opened a toll road. Mortal kings are trading silk and cabbage like kids swapping marbles in an alley. And all he wanted was fresh fruit without getting off his cushion."

Thirty miles above them, a chime pinged from the armrest of Felix Vance’s geostationary wicker recliner.

A sleek brass pneumatic hatch opened smoothly in the cedar floorboard beside his right elbow.

The lacquered wooden tray rose on a velvet-lined magnetic pedestal, coming to a gentle halt right beside his hand.

On the tray sat the chilled melon, sliced into neat bite-sized crescents, sprinkled with a touch of crushed mint sugar, and surrounded by a wreath of sweet mountain plums.

Beside it, the pot of jasmine tea steamed gently at exactly sixty-eight point five degrees.

Felix blinked in pure, blissful astonishment.

He picked up a melon slice.

It was ice cold, crisp, and dripping with sweet, fragrant juice.

"Forty-two seconds," Felix whispered, his eyes shining with the deepest gratitude a human soul could experience. "From the kitchen cutting board to my recliner in forty-two seconds. Zero walking. Zero waiting."

He popped the melon slice into his mouth, crunching with pure ecstasy.

The rich, cool sweetness washed over his palate, erasing every lingering trace of thirst.

Beside him, Barnaby the clockwork owl let out a rhythmic series of approving clicks, his brass eyes glowing bright green.

Felix picked up his AetherDeck and checked his logistics status:

[SYSTEM PERK ACTIVE]: Supreme Convenience
STANDALONE HOST
AETHERDECK LOGISTICS DASHBOARD: TRAFFIC REPORT
Porch Express Lane: CLEAR [PRIORITY #1]
Commercial Highway Traffic: 74,210 Active Vessels
Automated Toll Revenue: +85,000 Spirit Gold / Day
Freight Efficiency: 100.0% [Zero Delays]
Player has achieved complete logistical self-sufficiency.
Physical movement required to sustain life: 0.00%
[1. SIP TEA] [2. EAT MELON] [3. SLEEP]

Felix smiled, tapping [2. EAT MELON] and then glancing at the accumulated toll revenue:

`Automated Toll Revenue: +85,000 Spirit Gold`

"Eighty-five thousand gold," Felix muttered, tapping the in-game merchant bazaar. "What does a guy sitting in a recliner thirty miles in the air need with gold coins?"

He scrolled through the general store listings until he spotted the agriculture tab:

【Bulk Organic Compost: Fermented Dragon-Beast Guano & Decomposed Sun-Lotus Leaves】 【Price: 10,000 Spirit Gold per Cartload】 【Effect: Triples Cabbage Growth Speed and Enhances Leaf Sweetness by 40%】

Felix bought eight cartloads with a single tap, routing the delivery straight down the downward blue slipstream to the Seventh Spire's back garden.

"Nether-Bane will love that," Felix chuckled, picturing the old skeleton's joy at eight cartloads of premium manure. "A good manager delegates the farming and provides the supplies."

He set the AetherDeck down onto his lap, savoring the cool, mint-dusted sweetness of his second melon crescent.

The tea was warm.

The melon was chilled.

The Wi-Fi was rock-solid at eleven point seven milliseconds.

"Now this," Felix muttered happily around another bite of melon, "is what civilization was built for. Infinite Wi-Fi, low ping, and forty-two-second room service."

He leaned back, crossed his legs, and watched the silent golden fleets glide through the stars below his feet, completely content with his magnificent, effortless empire of leisure.
