Chapter 056: The Chest That Opened Itself

The morning sun over Solitude Spire rose at its usual unhurried pace.

A cool mountain breeze drifted through the iron-wood pines, carrying the sweet scent of warm honey from the front garden.

Felix Vance sat at the kitchen table in a faded gray linen tunic and worn canvas slippers.

Beneath the front-left leg of the heavy pine table, Grandmaster Vivienne's Sovereign Heart Seal hummed with a faint purple light. The primordial relic remained jammed under the weathered wood, providing exactly three-quarters of an inch of perfect stability.

On the table sat a steaming bowl of salted congee and a plate of crispy scallion pancakes.

Across the porch railing outside the window, Barnaby the clockwork owl stood at absolute attention.

The plump brass automaton had not squawked once all morning. The thick black rubber stopper remained wedged tightly into his open beak, sealing off his ancient repertoire of pompous morning motivational lectures.

In his left brass talon, Barnaby firmly gripped a dull copper coin. Felix had slipped him the copper tip weeks ago as an upfront retainer to stay quiet.

Barnaby took his retainer very seriously. His glowing amber crystal eyes tracked passing clouds in cold, professional silence.

Down in the clover patch, the Thunder Gryphon lay on its side, snoring with the rhythmic rumble of a muffled generator.

The beast’s golden lion body soaked up the morning sun while its feathered eagle head rested on a pile of dried pine needles. Every few seconds, faint blue static sparks crackled harmlessly across its wingtips, popping the morning dew into puffs of warm steam.

Just beyond the sleeping beast, the Sun-Lotus Cabbage glowed with gentle, golden warmth. Its broad, translucent leaves caught the morning light, radiating an ambient heat field that kept the entire yard at a comfortable seventy-one degrees.

The kitchen screen door creaked.

Lyra Ashford stepped inside carrying a small porcelain pot of mountain mist tea.

She wore crisp white-and-silver disciple robes, cinched tight at the waist with an embroidered silk sash. Her golden hair was pinned in a neat high knot.

She placed the tea on the table with two hands, bowing slightly.

"Senior Brother," Lyra said softly. "The morning tea has settled. The outer perimeter patrols report zero anomalies. The high skies remain cleared by imperial decree."

Felix took a bite of a scallion pancake. The pastry was hot, flaky, and brushed with sesame oil.

"Good pastry," Felix said, chewing slowly. "Not too greasy. Tell whoever dropped off the flour basket that their dough prep is solid."

Lyra’s fingers trembled against her silk sleeves.

She swallowed hard, committing the phrase to memory. The Imperial Grain Masters had spent forty days sorting every grain of spiritual wheat by hand. Senior Brother had casually acknowledged their dough prep. That single remark would be preserved in their clan annals for centuries.

"I will relay your sacred appraisal, Senior Brother," Lyra murmured, keeping her gaze reverently lowered.

Felix reached into his pocket and pulled out his brass-cased slate.

The AetherDeck felt pleasantly warm against his fingers. He propped it against the porcelain sugar bowl, right above the humming Sovereign Heart Seal, and tapped the screen with his thumb.

The obsidian surface chimed with a crisp retro melody:

DEV CONSOLE
STANDALONE HOST
[AETHERDECK OS: NOTIFICATION CENTER]
Active Background Task: <Catacomb Crawler 8-Bit>
Status: STAGE 1 (LEVELS 1–10) COMPLETED
Final Boss Defeated: [Abyssal Bone General]

[STAGE CLEAR REWARD READY TO UNPACK]
Clear Chest Tier: Ancient Emperor Vault Cache

[1. UNPACK VAULT CHEST] [2. VIEW BATTLE LOG]

Felix took a sip of hot tea and shook his head.

"Finally finished the tutorial crawl," Felix muttered. "Took twelve hours on auto-pathing just to hit floor ten. The movement pathing in this game is terrible. The little knight probably got stuck behind a wall torch for half the night."

Lyra stood beside the table, her breath hitching as she glanced at the glowing runes.

She recognized the rhythm of celestial providence. Whenever Senior Brother touched that obsidian relic, reality shifted its weight.

Felix tapped the virtual button labeled [UNPACK VAULT CHEST].

A small pixelated treasure chest on the screen began to shake.

Fifty thousand feet beneath the eastern continent, the air was suffocatingly hot.

The *Abyssal Crypt of the First Emperor* had remained sealed for twelve millennia.

Its dark halls were lined with basalt pillars. The floors were paved with obsidian flagstones, soaked in ancient soot.

Twenty-four powerful cultivators stood before the Great Vault of Heaven.

Arch-Inquisitor Valen stood in the lead, his robes singed at the hems. Beside him stood Grand Elder Song of the Sacred Sword Sect, Patriarch Huo of the Blazing Sun Clan, and seven Array Masters.

They were exhausted.

Thousands of crushed talismans littered the stone. For sixteen days, the expedition had poured soul energy into the vault's ancient nine-layer ward.

"Hold the alignment!" Arch-Inquisitor Valen shouted, coughing through ash. "The ninth seal is unraveling! The imperial destiny of our continent hinges upon this hour!"

Grand Elder Song drove his sword into the stone, channeling azure sword qi into the central glyph.

"It opens!" Song shouted. "Twelve thousand years! The Vault of Heaven opens to the worthy!"

The massive bronze gates shuddered violently.

Blue and red lightning arced across the seams.

*CREAK.*

*BOOM.*

With a sound like rolling thunder, the four-hundred-ton bronze doors parted. A blast of ancient air rushed out, carrying the sacred scent of sandalwood, distilled sun-jade, and dried dragon grass.

Patriarch Huo fell to his knees in reverence, tears cutting streaks through the soot on his cheeks.

"Praise the ancestors!" Huo wept. "The divine legacy is ours!"

The twenty-four masters pushed forward, forcing the bronze doors apart with their combined spiritual domains.

They stumbled into the grand inner sanctum.

The chamber was a vast circular rotunda domed with glowing star-sapphires. At the center of the room, upon a nine-step dais of white spirit-jade, sat an ornate chest forged from pure celestial gold. Its corners were braced with black dragon scales, engraved with the sacred seal of the First Emperor.

Around the dais, an impenetrable Ninth-Order Void Stasis Array spun silently, projecting a cage of golden light that had preserved the chest across millennia.

Arch-Inquisitor Valen wiped blood from his lips, his eyes wild with triumph.

"Behold!" Valen proclaimed, pointing a trembling finger. "The Imperial Stasis Cage! It will take us three days to dissolve the stasis runes, but nothing can steal the prize from our grasp! We are the first beings to lay eyes upon this altar since the Great Fall!"

Grand Elder Song raised an imperial breaking rod. "Prepare the ward-suppression talismans! We must dismantle the stasis grid rune by—"

Song froze mid-sentence.

Above the ancient golden chest, the empty air warped.

A strange, glowing blue ring appeared in the middle of the stasis array. The circle had eight tiny glowing dots that chased each other in a smooth rotation.

*Loading...*

"What manner of demonic array is that?" Patriarch Huo stammered, stepping back. "An ancient self-destruct formation?"

"Impossible!" Valen hissed, his spatial compass spinning wildly. "There is no spiritual friction! It is as though the void itself is... buffering!"

The little blue circle completed three revolutions.

*PING.*

A cheerful, two-tone chime echoed through the twelve-thousand-year-old tomb.

The sound carried no divine authority. It sounded remarkably like a brass bell on a shop door.

At the sound of the chime, the Ninth-Order Void Stasis Array did not explode.

It simply ceased to exist.

The ancient golden imperial chest popped open on its heavy brass hinges with a dry *clack*.

A soft shower of tiny, square golden sparkles erupted from inside. The glittering light swept upward into a neat spiral.

Before the horrified eyes of twenty-four top cultivators, the sacred contents of the chest lifted into the air.

There was a scroll wrapped in silver foil, and a small pouch of glowing yellow seeds.

Both items flickered twice.

*FZZT.*

With the quiet pop of a bursting bubble, both treasures vanished entirely from the mortal realm.

The golden chest remained wide open. Its interior was lined with red velvet, completely and unmistakably empty.

A light, pleasant breeze swept through the ancient rotunda. It did not smell of ancient tombs, dragon blood, or primordial ash.

It smelled distinctly of toasted sesame oil and warm scallion pancakes.

Total silence descended upon the Vault of Heaven.

Arch-Inquisitor Valen stood with his mouth open, his imperial breaking rod slipping from his numb fingers. It clattered against the white jade steps with a sharp ring.

"Where... where did it go?" Valen whispered, his teeth clicking in disbelief. "The artifacts... the legacy..."

Grand Elder Song dropped to his knees, clawing at the stone flagstones.

"Stolen," Song gasped, clutching his chest. "Right before our eyes... without triggering a single ward..."

Patriarch Huo collapsed beside him, staring at the empty red velvet with hollow eyes.

"To breach a Ninth-Order Void Stasis Cage in less than two breaths," Huo whispered, his mind reeling. "To pluck the imperial legacy across tens of thousands of miles of solid earth, leaving only the scent of mortal breakfast pastries... who possesses such terrifying divinity?"

Valen’s eyes glazed over. His mind raced back through the reports of the past three months. The localized gravity wells. The impossible solar flares. The supreme recluse who slumbered on the forbidden peak.

"The Sovereign," Valen croaked, sinking to both knees in the dust. "The Sovereign of the Void... he did not even descend into the earth. He simply reached out a thought... and claimed his tribute while we played with door locks."

In the grand imperial chamber of the First Emperor, twenty-four of the realm’s greatest grandmasters buried their faces in the dirt and wept.

Back on Solitude Spire, the morning breeze gently ruffled the hem of Felix’s linen shorts.

On the table, the AetherDeck gave a final chime.

Two small items materialized on the weathered pine wood beside the plate of scallion pancakes.

The first was a rolled sheet of heavy parchment, tied with a blue linen ribbon. The second was a coarse burlap pouch containing five plump, wrinkled yellow seeds that glowed with a faint orange light.

A pair of dark Inspector HUD brackets snapped into focus over the table:

【Item: Ancient Thermonuclear Blueprint】 【Grade: Primordial Lost Technology (Tier 2)】 【Status: Unread / Encrypted】 【Inspector Note: Technical schematics for a sub-critical magnetic compression chamber. Requires high-density heavy water and an absurdly stubborn core. Basically a fancy metal pipe with too many screws.】

【Item: High-Yield Golden Radish Seeds (x5)】 【Grade: Five-Star Celestial Flora (Tier 1)】 【Growth Cycle: 48 Hours (Standard Soil)】 【Inspector Note: Genetically enhanced root vegetables. High in vitamin C, spiritual nitrogen, and pure solar calories. Causes mild explosive flatulence if eaten raw by mortals. Excellent for beef stew.】

Felix poked the parchment scroll with the tip of his chopstick.

Then he picked up the pouch of five yellow seeds and weighed it in his palm.

"Are you kidding me?" Felix sighed, slumping back into his chair. "Twelve hours of auto-battling through ten dungeon floors, and the stage clear loot is a plumbing diagram and five radish seeds?"

Lyra stood frozen beside him, her gaze locked onto the glowing seeds.

Her spirit perception screamed with raw shock. Each of those tiny yellow seeds contained enough pure, concentrated celestial yang energy to scorch a lake into dry salt. An imperial sect would sacrifice ten generations of elders just to sniff the soil that sprouted one leaf of such divine flora.

And Senior Brother was looking at them like they were expired discount coupons.

"Senior Brother," Lyra ventured in a hushed voice. "Are those... the legendary Five-Yang Golden Ginseng Seeds of the Ancient Solar Court?"

"They're radishes, Lyra," Felix said flatly, tossing the pouch onto the table. "Cheap gacha filler rewards. Classic mobile game developer tactics. They dangle a shiny imperial vault chest in front of you, make you wait half a day, and then hand you gardening chores so you log in tomorrow."

Felix picked up his third scallion pancake and took a large bite.

"Terrible RNG," he mumbled around the flaky pastry. "The loot drop rates on this server are completely unhinged."

Lyra bowed her head even lower, her chest swelling with deep, reverent terror.

*Senior Brother plundered the most guarded vault in the mortal realm without leaving his kitchen,* she thought, her hands trembling within her sleeves. *And his only grievance... is that the universe did not offer him a greater challenge.*

Outside on the railing, Barnaby the clockwork owl silently swiveled his head one hundred and eighty degrees, clutched his copper coin tight, and stared at the clouds.
