Chapter 086: The Tribute Footrests

2,196 wordsUse ← / → keys to navigate

Morning on Solitude Spire arrived with a crisp mountain breeze.

Sunlight filtered through the branches of the iron-wood pines, scattering warm golden patches across the cedar porch.

Felix Vance sat slouched in his deep wicker recliner.

He wore an oversized gray hemp robe, frayed at the cuffs and comfortably soft. His eyes were half-shut, his eyelids drooping with the heavy residue of an eleven-hour sleep cycle.

In his right hand, he loosely held the brass frame of the AetherDeck.

Right now, his heels were resting on an old wooden water bucket that he had flipped upside down two days ago.

The bucket was three inches too tall, violently wobbly, and had a rusty iron hoop that dug straight into his Achilles tendon.

Every time he shifted his ankles, the bucket gave a hollow *clunk* and threatened to roll off the porch.

"Terrible ergonomic design," Felix muttered under his breath. "The hitboxes on this porch furniture are completely scuffed. I need an actual ottoman, or my lower back is going to zero out by noon."

Over by the porch railing, Barnaby the clockwork owl stood at rigid attention.

The plump brass automaton had entered standby mode. The thick black rubber stopper remained firmly wedged between his brass mandibles, holding a polished imperial copper coin against the lip of his beak.

His internal brass balance wheel ticked with a slow, hypnotic cadence.

*Tick... tick... tick...*

Every sweep of the second hand sent a soft, acoustic dampening pulse across the porch, swallowing the harsh mountain wind and keeping the air peaceful.

Down in the front yard, the garden was a picture of quiet domestic industry.

The Sun-Lotus Cabbage sat in the center of the dark loam, its twelve emerald leaves unfurled to catch the morning sun. The golden flower at its core pulsed with a steady warmth, keeping the entire clearing locked at an immaculate sixty-nine degrees.

Beside the cabbage patch, Lord Nether-Bane—formerly the dreaded Ghost King of the Void—knelt in the dirt.

The ancient skeletal horror wore oversized burlap trousers tied with twine. His bony fingers plucked stray dandelions from between cabbage stems, dropping each weed into a small wooden bucket with terrified precision.

Ten paces away, stretched out in the wild clover, the Thunder Gryphon let out a contented snort. The golden beast rolled onto its side, sunning its feathered belly while lazily chewing on a dried spirit-beast bone.

On the low pine tea table next to Felix's recliner, the Ten-Thousand-Year Primordial Soul-Pearl rested upon a stack of paper receipts from the academy bakery.

The dark, star-filled orb held the papers firmly against the mountain breeze.

Through the kitchen door, Grandmaster Vivienne's Sovereign Heart Seal remained tucked beneath the short leg of the kitchen table, keeping the breakfast dishes completely level.

Everything on Solitude Spire was in perfect, idle balance.

Then the wooden suspension bridge creaked.

Felix didn't open his eyes, but his brow twitched with mild annoyance.

"Another unskippable cutscene," Felix grumbled. "If this is another delivery boy asking for a review on the melon delivery, I'm canceling my subscription."

Down at the rocky threshold of the bridge, a company of heavily armored men stood frozen in terror.

Leading them was Grand Inquisitor Drake.

The veteran commander of the Imperial High Sun Armada was stripped of his customary pride. His golden war-spear was strapped across his back, wrapped in white silk to prove he bore zero hostile intent.

Beneath his polished breastplate, Drake was sweating through three layers of linen. His hands shook so violently that his golden dragon tassels fluttered like bird wings.

Behind Drake stood twelve elite Imperial Paladins, shivering in sheer panic.

Carried between them on velvet slings were twelve massive chests forged from celestial red sandalwood, bound in solid Sun-Gold and draped in royal dragon-silk.

Drake dropped to both knees upon the gravel path, pressing his forehead against the sharp stones.

"Supreme Lord of the Sol-Firmament! Ancient Sovereign of the Golden Dawn!" Drake cried out, voice shaking with raw terror. "This lowly servant, Inquisitor Drake, has arrived to beg forgiveness for our court's blind insolence!"

Felix cracked open his left eye.

He stared down the path and activated his vision cheat.

【Target: Grand Inquisitor Drake】 【Cultivation: Tier 6 Grand Inquisitor】 【Threat Level: Harmless Dialogue NPC】 【Inspector Note: Severely dehydrated from panic. Convinced that clearing your throat will trigger a continental solar flare. Has brought heavy luggage.】

Felix shifted his gaze toward the twelve massive chests resting on the path.

【Item: Dragon-Silk Imperial Tribute Chests (x12)】 【Grade: Royal Celestial Hardwood & Sun-Gold Reinforcement】 【Contents: 10,000 Sun-Gold Ingots, 500 Vials of Thousand-Year Dragon-Marrow Elixir, 40 Rolls of Nine-Yang Brocade.】 【Durability: Indestructible by mortal means.】 【Inspector Note: Dense, perfectly balanced, flat-topped, exactly fourteen inches high. Outstanding load-bearing capacity. Sells to vendors for zero coins because the game engine flags them as 'Quest Junk.'】

Felix's eyes lingered on the line: *Exactly fourteen inches high.*

He looked down at the wobbly water bucket currently digging into his heel.

Then he looked back at the chests.

"Fourteen inches," Felix murmured. "That's actually the exact ergonomic clearance for this chair."

The cottage door clicked open, and Lyra Ashford stepped onto the porch.

She was dressed in her pristine white-and-silver training tunic, golden hair tied back in a neat braid. Her ancestral rapier hung at her side.

"Inquisitor Drake," Lyra said, voice ringing across the yard. "You bring armored soldiers to Solitude Spire at the hour of Senior Brother's morning contemplation. Do you wish for your armada to be wiped from the skies?"

Drake raised his head, pale as milk, hands clasped frantically.

"Lady Ashford! Please! Have mercy!" Drake begged, teeth chattering. "We did not come with weapons of war! The Emperor witnessed the golden dawn at midnight and fell from his throne in terror!"

Drake frantically gestured toward the twelve paladins, who lowered the chests to the ground.

"These are the Twelve Chests of the High Sun Tribute!" Drake gasped. "Inside are ten thousand ingots of Sun-Gold, five hundred flasks of Thousand-Year Dragon-Marrow Elixir, and the finest Nine-Yang dragon-silk! The Emperor begs the Sun God to accept this meager gift and spare our capital from his divine wrath!"

Lyra folded her arms, aristocratic chin high.

*Ten thousand ingots of Sun-Gold?* Lyra thought, pulse quickening. *Drake has brought the national treasury to our doorstep!*

She glanced back at Felix.

Felix had not moved an inch. He remained slouched in his chair, chin tucked into his collar, expression completely blank.

*Look at Senior Brother's cold indifference,* Lyra thought with religious awe. *He doesn't even blink at the wealth of an entire empire. To a cosmic entity with a burning star in his chest, mortal gold is merely cold stone. He is demonstrating that earthly greed holds zero value in the face of the Infinite Dao!*

Lyra turned back to Drake. "Your mortal trinkets cannot tempt the Sovereign. Take your chests and—"

"Wait," Felix said.

His lazy drawl cut through the quiet air.

Lyra immediately fell silent, bowing forty-five degrees with deep reverence. "Senior Brother? Have you decided to bestow an ancient judgment upon their insolence?"

Felix let out a weary sigh.

He lifted his legs, kicking the wobbly wooden bucket away with the toe of his slipper.

The bucket tumbled down the wooden steps, clattering across the gravel before settling against the fence.

Felix pointed a languid finger at the two closest chests.

"You," Felix called out. "The guy with the gold tassels."

Drake snapped his head up. "Y-Yes, Supreme Sovereign! Your humble servant awaits your divine decree!"

"Bring two of those boxes up here," Felix said.

Drake blinked. "T-The tribute chests, Sovereign?"

"Yeah. The red wooden ones with the gold trim," Felix said. "Put them right here in front of my chair. Side by side. Long edges touching."

Drake's breath caught in his throat.

*He wants the tribute brought to his sacred platform!* Drake thought in holy panic. *He is going to inspect the purity of our Sun-Gold! If there is a single flaw, he will incinerate us on the spot!*

"Immediately! At once!" Drake shouted.

Drake didn't dare order his men. He ran forward himself, hauling the first sandalwood chest with both arms.

He climbed the porch steps on tiptoes to avoid creaking the floorboards, placing it gently before Felix's chair.

Then he sprinted back down, grabbed the second chest, and lined it up flush against the first.

The two chests sat side by side, their Sun-Gold filigree gleaming, dragon-silk radiating pure Yang warmth.

Drake dropped flat on the cedar planks. "The tribute is presented, Great Sovereign! Shall I unseal the imperial dragon locks?"

Felix looked down at the chests.

He patted the top surface with his foot. It was rock solid, perfectly level, and exactly fourteen inches high.

"Nah," Felix said. "Don't touch the locks. If you open them, the top won't be flat anymore."

Drake froze. "S-Sovereign...?"

Felix leaned back into the plush cushions of his wicker recliner.

He stretched his legs out, kicked off his straw slippers, and propped his bare heels directly onto the dragon-silk covers of the Imperial Tribute chests.

*Thump.*

Felix crossed his ankles over the solid Sun-Gold imperial crest.

He let out a long, luxurious sigh that made his shoulders sink four inches deeper into the chair.

The alignment was immaculate.

His knees rested at a perfect seventy-five-degree ergonomic bend. The dragon-silk padded his heels like memory foam, while the dense celestial hardwood provided unyielding support.

His lower back tension vanished instantly.

"Man..." Felix whispered, closing his eyes in bliss. "Now that's what I'm talking about. Perfect height. Zero wobble. Ten out of ten ottoman."

Drake remained prostrated on the floorboards, face inches from Felix's discarded slippers.

His brain entirely stalled.

*He... he put his feet on it,* Drake's mind echoed in stunned disbelief. *The High Sun Empire's supreme tribute... ten thousand ingots of celestial gold... five hundred bottles of imperial dragon marrow...*

*He didn't open the lids.*

*He didn't glance at the inventory scroll.*

*He is using the entire sovereign wealth of the High Sun Empire as a footstool for his morning nap!*

A wave of overwhelming, soul-crushing enlightenment washed over Drake's trembling spirit.

*This is the true realm of an ancient god!* Drake realized, tears flooding his vision. *To him, mortal treasures are merely wood and stone. But by resting his feet upon our tribute, he has accepted our submission! Solitude Spire has stepped upon our empire... and granted us his divine protection!*

Drake pressed his forehead against the porch, sobbing with profound gratitude.

"Thank you, Supreme Sovereign!" Drake choked out. "Your mercy is vast as the boundless void! The High Sun Empire shall forever remain your humble footstool!"

Lyra stood beside the railing, eyes sparkling with starry revelation.

*Incredible,* Lyra thought, hand pressed to her heart. *Senior Brother demonstrated the supreme Dao of Subjugation. By placing his heels upon their gold, he declared that mortal greed is beneath his very feet! His wisdom is terrifying!*

On the chest beneath Felix's feet, a soft golden warmth pulsed from the Sun-Gold ingots inside, keeping Felix's toes delightfully warm.

Felix reached his hand out, picking up his AetherDeck from the armrest.

He unlocked the screen, tapped the claim button, and watched his idle counter spin.

Felix frowned at the bottom line.

"Still the same trash banner from yesterday," Felix muttered, shaking his head with mild disgust. "These devs are so lazy. Can't even push a content update on schedule."

He dropped the AetherDeck onto his lap, crossed his arms, and dug his heels a little deeper into the dragon-silk.

"Leave the other ten boxes by the firewood pile," Felix said casually toward the yard. "If I ever need to build a porch bench, the wood looks sturdy enough."

"At once, Divine Ancestor!" Drake cried out, scrambling backward on hands and knees. "It shall be done with absolute devotion!"

Within thirty seconds, the paladins had stacked the remaining ten treasure chests neatly beside the split pine logs, moving with the terrified care of men handling explosive runes.

Then they vanished across the suspension bridge, fleeing back toward their sky-galleons in awe-inspired silence.

Solitude Spire returned to its peaceful morning quiet.

Barnaby gave a gentle, rhythmic *tick... tick... tick...*

The Ghost King carefully placed another pulled dandelion into his wooden bucket.

And Felix Vance closed his eyes, his feet propped comfortably on the wealth of an empire, drifting smoothly into his morning nap.
