By early afternoon, the temperature on Solitude Spire remained locked at a pleasant sixty-nine degrees.
The Sun-Lotus Cabbage breathed gentle warmth across the yard.
Felix Vance had not moved from his wicker recliner in four hours.
His bare heels remained propped upon the two dragon-silk Imperial Tribute chests. The Sun-Gold ingots inside radiated a steady warmth that kept his arches and calves utterly loose.
In his left hand, Felix held a mug of chilled melon juice. In his right, he tapped lazily at the glass surface of the AetherDeck.
He was currently browsing the settings menu of *Pocket Star Sandbox*.
"Plasma dynamo," Felix murmured, sipping melon juice. "Always keeps the background loop running clean. No lag spikes, no frame drops."
Beside his chair, the Ten-Thousand-Year Primordial Soul-Pearl weighed down a stack of melon peel napkins on the low pine table.
Through the kitchen door, Grandmaster Vivienne's Sovereign Heart Seal kept the table steady against the floorboards.
Near the cabbage patch, the Ghost King was still on his knees, using bony claws to scrape wild clover from the dirt.
Ten paces away, the Thunder Gryphon rested its massive golden head on its paws, snoring peacefully in the midday warmth.
On the cedar balustrade, Barnaby the clockwork owl gave a quiet *tick... tick... tick...*
The black rubber stopper stayed wedged tightly between his brass mandibles, holding the copper coin motionless.
Then the suspension bridge rattled.
It was the heavy, rhythmic stamping of boots belonging to men who believed they owned the ground beneath their heels.
Across the gorge marched five men dressed in the crimson-and-gold ceremonial robes of the Imperial Ministry of Rites.
Leading them was Imperial Censor Varus.
Varus was a tall, severe man with razor-sharp cheekbones, a pencil-thin mustache, and cold eyes. He wore the high scholar's crown of the Imperial High Court, pinned in place with silver dragon skewers. In his arms, he carried a heavy lacquer writing desk.
Behind him, four junior scribes dragged their feet, shivering while clutching brass ink basins and blank parchment.
Varus stepped off the bridge onto the grass, sneering at the weeds.
"Disgraceful," Varus said. "Drake has lost his mind. A slumbering solar god? Bah. Look at this pathetic heap of gravel. It is nothing more than an abandoned squatter's hut."
One of the young scribes swallowed hard. "Lord Censor... look at that skeleton in the garden. Isn't that Lord Nether-Bane?"
"Nonsense," Varus snapped. "It is an unwashed vagrant wearing theatrical bones. The Imperial Law cannot be fooled."
Varus marched straight toward the porch, stopping ten paces from the wooden steps.
He planted his feet wide and lifted his chin with supreme legal arrogance.
"Felix Vance!" Varus barked. "I am Varus, Imperial Censor of the Seventh Rank! You are hereby cited for seventy-four counts of unlawful land occupation, cosmic tax evasion, and harboring imperial fugitives!"
Felix didn't open his eyes. He took another sip of juice.
"Skip dialogue," Felix muttered. "Where is the fast-forward button?"
The cottage door swung open.
Lyra Ashford stepped onto the porch, silver rapier at her side. Her brow furrowed at the crimson robes.
"Censor Varus," Lyra said coldly. "You have crossed the forbidden threshold. General Drake has submitted the Imperial Tribute. The debts are settled."
Varus let out a dry, scornful bark of laughter.
"Lady Ashford," Varus sneered. "The Imperial Court does not bow to hermit vagrants. This peak is seized. And you shall be returned to the capital in irons."
Varus turned toward his scribes, snapping his fingers.
"Unpack the writing altar!" Varus commanded. "I shall draft the Imperial Mandate of Execution with my own hand!"
The scribes scrambled forward, setting down the low lacquer table on the gravel.
Varus drew his personal writing set from a rosewood box.
He lifted an ornate brush forged entirely from Nine-Dragon Platinum-Iron—an ancient alloy mined from fallen stars, passed down through eight generations of imperial judges.
Next, he pulled an obsidian inkstone filled with Celestial Magnetic Ink, refined from powdered meteorite iron and alchemical mercury.
Finally, he unrolled a scroll woven from cold jade and bound with pure gold leaf.
Felix cracked open one eyelid, activating his HUD.
【Target: Imperial Censor Varus】 【Cultivation: Tier 5 Legalist Magus】 【Threat Level: Annoying Cutscene NPC】 【Inspector Note: Highly litigious. Believes paperwork has a higher attack rating than a main-sequence star. Carrying conductive metal stationery into a localized magnetic field.】
Felix's gaze flicked to the brush and inkstone.
【Item: Nine-Dragon Platinum-Iron Stylus】 【Composition: High-Permeability Ferromagnetic Core, Platinum Plating】 【Inspector Note: Extremely vulnerable to electromagnetic induction. Basically a lightning rod for stray magnetic flux.】
Felix sighed. He opened *Pocket Star Sandbox* and tapped a setting to check passive yields.
His stellar core gave a microscopic, involuntary flutter.
Deep inside Felix's chest, the convective plasma layers of his miniature sun shifted, spinning a fraction of a millimeter. That tiny movement accelerated millions of tons of superheated hydrogen plasma through a localized dynamo cycle.
Around his wicker chair, the invisible electromagnetic field warped sharply, spiking to nearly three hundred thousand Gauss.
Down on the path, Varus dipped his metal brush into the obsidian inkwell.
"Let all under heaven witness the authority of the Imperial Court!" Varus proclaimed grandly. "The first character of your sentence shall be—"
*GLOOP.*
The obsidian inkwell let out a wet, violent gurgle.
Before Varus could lower the brush, the Celestial Magnetic Ink inside the stone basin shuddered.
Tens of thousands of razor-sharp liquid spikes erupted from the inkwell like a startled metallic hedgehog.
Then, drawn by the surging magnetic flux flowing from Felix's dantian, the entire pool of black ink ripped free of the basin.
*SPLAT!*
A fist-sized blob of magnetized black ink launched through the air, striking Varus squarely in the center of his face.
The ink splattered across his nose, coated his mustache, and dripped heavily onto his crimson silk collar.
"Pfft! Gah! Ptui!" Varus choked, spitting bitter mercury from his mouth. "What is this?! Who threw that?!"
The scribes recoiled in terror. "Lord Censor! The ink jumped on its own!"
"Silence, fools!" Varus roared, wiping black sludge from his eyes. "I still hold the Sovereign Brush of Law!"
Varus gripped the Nine-Dragon Platinum-Iron Stylus with both hands, aiming the tip at the jade scroll.
He never touched the paper.
The moment Varus channeled spiritual energy through the stylus, the intense magnetic field of the stellar core seized the alloy.
Eddy currents raced through the metal with violent fury.
The stylus turned white-hot in less than a second.
*HIIISSSSS!*
Smoke billowed from Varus's silk gloves.
"HOT! IT'S BURNING!" Varus shrieked, dancing on the gravel.
He tried to let go, but electromagnetic attraction between the stylus and the metal buttons on his robe locked his hands in place.
Then, right before the scribes, the ten-inch platinum-iron rod softened like heated wax.
Under the crushing force generated by the magnetic flux, the imperial stylus smoothly curled into a perfect semicircle.
*CREEEEAK... SNAP.*
The ends met. The ancestral brush of the Ministry of Rites had folded completely in half, transforming into a neat, smoking horseshoe.
Varus stood frozen, eyes bulging in horror.
"My... my stylus..." Varus whimpered, voice cracking. "Eight generations of ancestral justice... bent like a blacksmith's scrap...?"
Before he could process the loss, the jade scroll began to rattle.
The filigree of gold leaf woven into the jade edges caught the fluctuating magnetic waves.
With a sound like crinkling parchment, the gold threads peeled themselves out of the stone. They melted together in midair, flattening under electromagnetic pressure into a single crumpled sheet of shiny gold foil.
The foil caught the breeze and slapped itself firmly against the front of Varus's ink-drenched chest with a loud *FLAP*.
Total silence descended upon the clearing.
Varus stood in the center of the path.
His face was coated in thick black ferro-fluid. His ancestral stylus was a charred horseshoe. His jade scroll was stripped bare, and a sheet of gold foil was plastered across his stomach like a bib.
The scribes dropped their brushes, throwing themselves flat into the dirt.
"The Heavens have spoken!" the scribes sobbed. "The Law of the Mortal Court has been erased! The Sun God has melted the Mandate of Justice!"
Varus's knees knocked together.
He stared down at the horseshoe in his blistered palms, then slowly looked up toward the cedar porch.
Felix Vance had not moved.
His bare heels remained resting on the dragon-silk tribute chests. He held his ceramic mug, calmly taking another sip of chilled melon juice.
To Varus's shattered mind, this was not physics. It was the terrifying authority of the Primordial Void.
*He didn't speak,* Varus thought, his mind crumbling into ash. *He didn't draw a sword. He didn't even set down his cup.*
*With a single thought of his divine will, he reversed the polarity of the world! He turned the sacred ink into poison! He bent the unbreakable metal of the High Court into a circle of mockery! And he stripped the golden authority from our scrolls!*
Varus’s knees gave out.
He collapsed heavily onto the sharp gravel, the horseshoe stylus clattering against the stones before him. Tears washed clean white streaks through the black ink on his cheeks.
"I... I am guilty..." Varus whispered, shivering. "The mortal law is blind... mortal law is dust before the Sun..."
Lyra Ashford watched from the porch railing, arms folded, eyes blazing with profound enlightenment.
*Breathtaking,* Lyra thought, pulse hammering with awe. *Senior Brother didn't merely humiliate the Imperial Censor. He demonstrated that when the True Sun shines, the petty ink of mortals cannot hold form! His Dao is boundless!*
Felix lowered his mug and looked down at the ink-stained man in the yard.
He activated his HUD once more.
【Item: Bent Platinum-Iron Stylus】 【Grade: 1-Star Defective Novelty Item】 【Durability: 4/100】 【Inspector Note: Warped by stray eddy currents. Now shaped like a horseshoe. Works decently as a coat hook or a peach pit remover.】
Felix shook his head, letting out a tired sigh.
"Look, man," Felix called out, voice flat and bored. "I don't know which traveling merchant scammed you, but you need to check the return policy on your stationery."
Varus froze, looking up through his tears. "R-Return policy...?"
"Yeah," Felix said, waving a lazy hand. "Buying cheap alloy pens from street vendors is always a trap. The metal purity is garbage, the hitboxes warp the second the temperature changes, and that ink is full of magnetic filler. Go back to the shop and ask for a refund."
Varus stared at Felix with wide, unblinking eyes.
*A refund from the shop?!* Varus thought, his soul trembling with cosmic revelation. *He means the Great Shop of Reincarnation! He is telling me that my entire mortal existence was forged from inferior karma... and if I wish to face him again, I must dissolve my Dao heart and be reborn!*
Varus bowed until his forehead cracked against the gravel path.
"This sinner understands!" Varus wailed, clutching the horseshoe stylus to his chest. "I shall return to the dust! I shall dissolve my pride and seek the true metal of the Heavens!"
Varus scrambled backward on hands and knees, tumbling down the path.
The four scribes grabbed their master, hauling him onto his feet, and sprinted across the suspension bridge in utter terror.
Within moments, their footsteps faded into the distance.
Solitude Spire was quiet once more.
Barnaby gave a gentle *tick... tick... tick...*
Down in the garden, the Ghost King picked up another dandelion and dropped it into his wooden bucket, nodding solemnly.
Felix looked down at his AetherDeck. The magnetic flux reading had settled back to normal.
"Cheap knockoff pens," Felix muttered, shaking his head. "People will buy literally anything if you put dragon engravings on it."
He settled deeper into his wicker chair, crossed his ankles over the tribute chests, and closed his eyes to finish his afternoon doze.
