On the quiet cedar porch of Solitude Spire, the morning post-breakfast tranquility had reached an absolute, celestial peak.
Lyra Ashford moved through the kitchen like a ghost in white silk.
She held a clean linen cloth in both hands, wiping the crumbs of sun-forged sourdough from the pine tabletop with religious precision. She did not wipe the crumbs into the trash bin.
Instead, she carefully gathered every microscopic flake of golden crust into an antique jade vial, sealing the stopper with three layers of protective talisman wax.
To Lyra, those crumbs were not trash. They were condensed droplets of Ninth-Tier Primordial Yang, capable of curing heart-demons, incinerating cold-curses, and resurrecting withered spiritual roots.
Out in the clover lawn, Lord Nether-Bane remained crouched on all fours.
The Ghost King had traded his silver tweezers for a small bone trowel. He was currently excavating a rogue dandelion taproot with the delicate care of a master surgeon removing an explosive curse from an emperor's skull.
Every time a drop of cold sweat dripped from his spectral nose, he caught it with his sleeve before it hit the soil.
Beside the stone well, the Thunder Gryphon let out a long, shuddering sigh of pure feline contentment. The golden beast rolled onto its back, all four paws pointing at the sky, letting the warm mountain breeze ruffle its belly feathers.
Felix Vance did not care about the crumbs, the weeds, or the gryphon's belly.
He was currently engaged in the most strenuous activity of his morning: walking four paces from the kitchen door to his Zero-Gravity Recliner.
*Squeak-thump.*
Felix collapsed into the padded mesh recliner with a groan that sounded like a deflating tire.
He gave the footrest lever a lazy kick with his right heel. The chair tilted back forty-five degrees, locking his spine into an ergonomic cradle that instantly relieved every ounce of gravitational pressure from his lumbar discs.
"Peak engineering," Felix sighed, resting his head against the neck pillow. "The guy who invented recliners deserves a Nobel prize. If heaven doesn't have adjustable footrests, I'm canceling my subscription."
Up on the windowsill, Barnaby stood at silent attention.
The black rubber stopper kept his brass mandibles firmly clamped shut, and the polished copper tip gleamed under the warm sun. Inside his automaton chest, his internal gears hummed with a quiet sixty-cycle vibration that provided soothing white noise.
From the kitchen doorway, Lyra watched her Senior Brother with breathless awe.
*Look at him,* Lyra thought, her fingers tightening around the jade vial. *He sits in the posture of the Slumbering Dragon. His body appears utterly relaxed, yet his celestial aura is woven seamlessly into the mountain's ley lines. He does not waste a single erg of energy on useless mortal posturing.*
Felix reached into his hemp tunic pocket and retrieved the AetherDeck.
He tapped the obsidian screen.
The home dashboard flickered to life. Right beside the familiar icons for *Stellar Idle* and *Catacomb Crawler*, a brand-new icon was pulsing with a bright green leaf and an insistent red notification dot:
Felix stared at the green leaf icon, his eyes lighting up with mild gamer curiosity.
"Finally," Felix murmured. "A cozy farming simulator. *Catacomb Crawler* was getting way too grindy with all those collapsing dungeon ceilings and ancient skeletons. I just want to plant vegetables and watch numbers go up."
He tapped `[LAUNCH APP]`.
The screen faded to black, followed by a cheerful, eight-bit chiptune jingle that played through the slate's internal speaker at a muted three decibels.
The graphics resolved into a charming, top-down pixel art rendering of Solitude Spire.
Felix squinted at the screen.
"Wait a second," Felix muttered, zooming in with two fingers. "The devs used our exact property layout for the starter map. That's either lazy asset recycling or a very specific mod."
On the little screen, he could see a tiny pixelated cedar cottage, a pixelated stone well, and a patch of green clover.
In the middle of the garden bed, a single five-star pixelated cabbage was glowing with bright yellow light.
A tiny tooltip popped up when he tapped the cabbage:
【Target: Sun-Lotus Cabbage】 【Stage: Fully Mature (Harvestable)】 【Inspector Note: Radiates a permanent 69-degree comfort zone across your front yard. If you harvest it, you will have to chop your own firewood this winter. Better to leave it as a natural heat lamp.】
"Yeah, definitely not harvesting that," Felix said. "Leaving it in the ground saves electricity."
He tapped the wooden seed bag in his game inventory.
A prompt appeared:
`[Starter Seeds Available: 12x Solar Radish Seeds]` `[Cost: 10 Idle Spark | Maturation Timer: 3 Minutes]`
"Three minutes?" Felix smiled. "Short timers. Devs know what they're doing. Let's get these in the dirt."
He dragged the seed icon with his thumb across an empty patch of pixel soil near the front fence.
*Plop. Plop. Plop.*
Twelve little brown seed sprites settled into the digital dirt. An animated wooden watering can hovered over them, sprinkling sparkly blue water droplets across each tile.
Out in the real yard, three paces from where Lord Nether-Bane was weeding, the earth gave a soft, subterranean shudder.
The Ghost King froze mid-trowel, his eyes bulging as he watched twelve miniature mounds of soil rise and settle with supernatural alignment, exactly sixteen inches apart.
*The Sovereign is shaping the earth!* Nether-Bane shivered, his spectral core quaking. *With a twitch of his thumb, he aligns the subterranean dragon veins!*
On the screen, a circular progress bar appeared above the bed: `[00:02:59]`.
Felix rested his thumb on the slate's brass bezel, watching the numbers tick down with immense satisfaction.
"Three minutes of peace," Felix whispered. "Then I claim the harvest, complete the daily farm quest, and take a four-hour nap. Flawless time management."
He had reached the one-minute mark when the screen suddenly turned amber.
A red exclamation mark flashed in the center of the display:
*BEEP-BEEP.*
`[ALERT: PEST INVASION DETECTED!]` `[Threat Entity: Abyssal Crows (Flock Size: 80)]` `[Pest Behavior: Diving to devour Solar Radish sprouts!]`
Felix's brow twitched in annoyance.
From the top border of the screen, a massive swarm of tiny, jagged black bird sprites fluttered into view.
They looked like low-resolution crows with glowing red eye pixels. The flock descended in a tight wedge formation, screaming digital squawks as they dove straight toward his freshly watered radish patch.
A little durability bar appeared above the sprouted green leaves:
`[Solar Radish Bed Durability: 94%... 88%... 79%...]`
"Hey!" Felix shouted at the screen. "Get lost! Shoo!"
He frantically tapped his thumb on the lead crow sprite.
*Click.*
The tiny pixel bird vanished in a puff of grey smoke, but five more immediately took its place.
`[Manual Tapping Ineffective against Swarm Density!]` `[Warning: Crop destruction imminent! Install Perimeter Defenses!]`
"Unbelievable," Felix grumbled, rolling his eyes in disgusted exhaustion. "Why do mobile farm games always have these stupid, unskippable minigames? I just wanted to grow radishes, not play a rhythm clicker against a bunch of digital pigeons!"
He opened the game's construction shop tab.
A list of farm accessories popped up. Most of them were locked behind high levels—stone walls, decorative birdbaths, celestial trellises.
Only one defensive item was unlocked for beginner accounts:
【Item: Basic Wooden Scarecrow】 【Type: Base Defense / Automated Anti-Pest Array】 【Cost: 50 Idle Wood, 10 Solar Spark】 【Inventory Stock: 3 Units】 【Inspector Note: Carved from ancient weathered cedar. Wears a floppy straw hat and features crossed wooden arms. Emits high-frequency anti-avian micro-pulses to deter unwanted winged scavengers. Guaranteed to keep your radish patch 100% crow-free.】
Felix didn't read the flavor text. He just saw the words *Automated Anti-Pest*.
"Automated," Felix muttered, his heart warming at the word. "The most beautiful word in the English language. Why swat birds with your thumb when you can build a turret and go to sleep?"
He dragged the first wooden scarecrow from the menu.
He dropped it onto the eastern perimeter fencepost of his pixel farm, right above the rocky gorge.
*CLINK.*
A tiny wooden scarecrow sprite snapped onto the fence line. It wore a floppy brown hat and had two button eyes made of shiny black pixels.
He dragged the second scarecrow and dropped it onto the southern ridge fencepost, pointing directly out toward the cloud sea.
*CLINK.*
He grabbed the third scarecrow and dropped it onto the western stone pillar guarding the suspension bridge.
*CLINK.*
`[Defensive Grid Synchronized!]` `[Three Scarecrow Units Deployed along Perimeter Fence.]` `[Scanning Local Airspace for Winged Pests...]`
On the screen, the three little pixel scarecrows gave a tiny golden pulse.
The swarm of black crow sprites instantly froze in mid-air. Their little red eye pixels blinked in digital panic, and the entire flock turned around, fleeing toward the top edge of the screen at triple speed.
`[Pest Threat Suppressed. Solar Radish Maturation: 100%.]` `[Harvest Claimed: 12x Solar Radish Roots Added to Inventory.]`
Felix let out a long, happy breath.
"There," Felix murmured, tapping the slate's power button to put the screen to sleep. "Problem solved. Scarecrows handle the birds, the crops are in the bag, and my daily login streak is preserved."
He placed the AetherDeck face-down on his lap.
He reached down to the hem of his faded cotton quilt, pulling the warm fabric all the way up to his chin. He nestled his head deep into the ergonomic neck pillow, letting his eyelids droop shut.
"Wake me up at two," Felix mumbled toward the porch. "Unless the sky falls. And even if the sky falls, make sure it falls quietly."
Within ten seconds, his breathing slowed into a steady, rhythmic cadence.
Inside his chest, the miniature Sol-Class star hummed softly, radiating gentle warmth through his ribs.
Down in the yard, however, the silence was shattered by a sound that had nothing to do with peace.
A deep, tectonic vibration rose through the living granite.
The three wooden fenceposts along the cliff edge began to glow with blinding, liquid gold.
