Sect Year 1 · fourth month · night of day 22 · the eighth life: Oxbow Ferry, a river house on a bend, her fifth year
“Calm. Willing.”
“Keep the boat in the water through every season.”
“Echo of a Past Life.”
Dawn came up grey over the river. Nessa sat on the landing planks with her heels in the cold water and her chin on her knees, and watched her father work the rope.
The ferry was a flat black boat, broad as a cart and not much longer than a house, hung from a hemp line that ran from post to post across the current. When the river leaned on the rope, the rope hummed. It was a low note, and she felt it through the planks before she heard it, the way she felt her father’s laugh through his chest when he was pretending not to laugh.
“Don’t look at the boat,” her father said without turning round. “Look at the water. The water tells you first.”
“What does it say?”
