At 7:00 PM that evening, a hundred warm red paper lanterns lit up the spacious courtyard of the newly opened Gu Family Peace Orphanage & Night School. Turning the chilly autumn dusk into a glowing sea of laughter and steaming broth.
Inside the five-story marble building that had once been a place of nightmares. Four hundred newly bathed street orphans sat in neat rows wearing clean blue cotton winter jackets, their cheeks flushed rosy pink. They wolfed down second and third helpings of Braised Pork Buns, Radish-and-Mutton Rib Soup, and Candied Sweet Potatoes.
Out under the old pear tree in the central courtyard. Gu Changsheng set up a long teacher’s podium beside a roaring charcoal brazier and called his three children forward: ten-year-old Gu Ye Xiao, nine-year-old Gu Nian, and seven-year-old Su Nuannuan.
“Line up by height, you three,” Gu Changsheng said, opening the brass latch of his [Dad’s Care-Package Upgrade Box].
Earlier that afternoon, using 150,000 DP, scraps of Dragon-Scale Silk from the Royal Treasure Pavilion, waterproof spirit-leather. Three brass safety whistles, Gu Changsheng had fused a set of matching equipment for his three kids.
Reaching into the box, Gu Changsheng pulled out three identical. Bright canary-yellow [Fused Dragon-Silk Yellow Schoolbags]—each embroidered on the front flap with a cute cartoon emblem (a golden bamboo ruler for Ye Xiao, a flexing bunny fist for Gu Nian. A pink watering can for Su Nuannuan) and enchanted with a lightweight spatial-storage pocket, rainproofing, and an automatic posture-correcting shoulder strap!
