The stone cursor blinked with the steady, mocking patience of an unattended end-post.
Every pulse of azure light lit up the sharp-angled rune carvings flanking the black glass slab. Complex logic gates etched in gold leaf. It ended in eight un-thrown circuit switches along the stone stand’s rim.
Lin Ke didn’t touch a single switch.
In an unfamiliar legacy work-yard running under critical over-pressure, the worst mistake a recovery technician could make was entering arbitrary office commands. One wrong handshake, and the fail-safe interlocks would trigger a self-running purge cycle—flooding this underground cathedral with thirty thousand gallons of high-pressure liquid fire to sterilize the room.
“Why is it blinking?” Shen Yue whispered, her small voice echoing faintly off the distant vaulted ceiling. “Is it waiting for a blood sacrifice? The ancient texts say the sky arrays of the First Dynasties needed the blood of an immortal crane to unlock.”
“It doesn’t want blood,” Lin Ke replied, his breath misting in the cold air. “It wants an office password. And if we guess wrong three times, the system bricks the hardware.”
He rested both palms against the outer stone rim of the stone stand. That kept his skin well clear of the live black glass screen, and closed his eyes.
