The darkness of Sub-Vault Zero had weight.
It pressed against the skin like cold, still water, forty deep-water lengths beneath the sunlight. There was no wind here, no distant roar of blast furnaces, no rattle of iron chains, and no sound of human voices.
There was only the slow, rhythmic thrum-thrum of the staging array cycling beneath the white jade floor, and the sound of Lin Ke’s own breath moving through his nostrils in long, six-second intervals.
On the white jade dais, Lin Ke sat with his spine straight as an iron straight-line.
The silk pouch resting on his tongue was cool, smooth, and tasted faintly of dried mulberry leaves.
Inside his pelvis, the volatile cloud of his 9th-Layer dantian had reached its total heat-powered limit. The spiritual vapor was rotating so fast it had become a blur of violet light, heavy outward pull pulling the thickness toward the outer edge, threatening to shear through the stringy lining of his Conception channel with every passing breath.
This was the cliff edge of mortal training.
The shift from Qi Gathering to Foundation Establishment (Zhubang) was not an incremental promotion. It was an existential phase change. Taking the volatile, transient spiritual vapor that evaporated upon mortal death, and condensing it into an unchanging, persistent, liquid spiritual foundation that anchored the soul to the physical universe.
