Chapter 144: Roommate Feud: Gryphon vs Azure Dragon

Early afternoon heat settled over the floating archipelago of Radiant Dawn.

High above the sea of clouds, the autumn sun shone with bright, unobstructed radiance.

Yet across the courtyard of Solitude Spire, the air remained locked at a pleasant sixty-nine degrees, cooled by the gentle hum of the five-star Sun-Lotus Cabbage.

Along the perimeter fence, the newly strung fairy lights cast soft lavender and golden reflections over the dark soil.

Up on the porch rafters, Barnaby the clockwork owl stood completely motionless on his brass perch.

The thick black rubber stopper Felix had jammed into his beak held the owl's copper tip firmly sealed.

Barnaby’s amber crystal eyes blinked slowly, accompanied only by the steady, hypnotic *tick... tick... tick* of his internal chronometer.

Below the perch, the low cedar tea table stood firm and level, stabilized by Grandmaster Vivienne’s purple Sovereign Heart Seal jammed under its front leg.

On top of the table, held down by the glowing Soul-Pearl paperweight, lay Felix's gacha banner probability charts.

Right next to them, the white porcelain Infinite Cozy Teacup rested peacefully, its Nine-Sun tea steaming gently at precisely 68.5°C.

Beside the porch's brass foundation exhaust pipe, the ancestral golden dragon egg hummed with its steady, living pulse: *thump... thump... thump.*

Because the midday sun was at its highest point, the most comfortable spot in the entire courtyard was the broad shadow cast by the cottage's cedar eaves.

The cedar overhang created a wide patch of cool, fragrant shade right beside the warm gravel border.

Down in the luxury coop, the Imperial Thunder Gryphon finished grooming its golden feathers.

The massive beast gave a sleepy yawn, stretched its feathered wings, and waddled out into the yard looking for an afternoon nap spot.

Its sharp golden eagle eyes scanned the clearing.

The clover lawn was too bright.

The gravel path was too exposed.

The shaded strip beside the porch, however, looked absolutely ideal.

The gryphon lumbered over to the shadow, circled three times, and flopped down onto its belly with a satisfied grunt.

It fluffed its golden plumage, resting its curved beak on its front claws.

Before the gryphon could close its eyes, however, a large azure shadow fell across the grass.

It was Ignis-Azureus, the Azure Dragon King.

The ancient sovereign had shrunk his massive serpentine body down to twenty paces in length, gliding through the grass like a giant sapphire ribbon.

He had come to watch over the pulsing golden egg beside the heat vent.

However, when the Dragon King reached the corner of the porch, he found the golden gryphon sprawled directly across the best patch of shade.

The Dragon King frowned, his azure whiskers twitching with aristocratic annoyance.

"Out of the way, feathered beast," the Dragon King hissed in a low, rumbling telepathic tone. "You are blocking the ancestral viewing perimeter."

The Dragon King casually flicked his tail, nudging the gryphon's hind leg out of the shade.

The Thunder Gryphon's golden eyes snapped wide open.

Its eagle pupils narrowed to razor slits.

The Imperial Thunder Gryphon was no common farm bird.

It was the supreme apex predator of the high mountain peaks, a creature whose bloodline had carried imperial war banners across three dynasties.

To be shoved aside by an oversized blue lizard was an unacceptable slight against its dignity.

*SKREEEE!*

The gryphon let out a sharp, ear-splitting screech, its neck feathers puffing up like a furious golden pincushion.

Tiny arcs of blue ozone crackled along its hooked beak.

It snapped its jaws inches from the Dragon King’s snout.

The Dragon King pulled his head back, his sapphire scales flaring with genuine draconic fury.

"Impudent turkey!" the Dragon King snarled, his storm horns crackling with azure plasma. "You dare snap at the Sovereign of the Azure Heavens?! Know your place in the food chain!"

*HISS-CHIRP!*

The gryphon leaped to its feet, spreading its wings to their full twenty-foot span.

Violet electrical sparks danced between its sharp talons.

It stamped the ground, digging deep gouges into the gravel while puffing an angry ring of purple ozone directly into the dragon’s face.

The Dragon King coiled his body, his throat glowing with brilliant blue flame.

"I have sundered mountain peaks while your ancestors were still learning to eat worms!" the dragon growled, baring rows of razor-sharp fangs. "Yield this shade, or I shall roast you into golden chicken broth!"

The air between the two beasts began to warp.

The temperature in the courtyard surged.

Atmospheric pressure plummeted as twin vortexes of lightning and storm mana clashed in the center of the yard.

Loose pebbles began to levitate.

The cedar fence posts groaned under the rising spatial tension.

Down in the vegetable patch, Lord Nether-Bane dropped his rake and sprinted toward the tool shed, waving his bony arms in frantic panic.

"To the compost shelter!" Nether-Bane yelled to his spectral corsairs. "The divine beasts have declared war! If their auras clash, the topsoil will be blasted to the lower strata!"

Behind the cedar fence, Herald Ao-Kun and Elder Ao-Bao clutched each other in absolute terror.

"Stop them!" Ao-Kun squeaked, his voice cracking. "If they trade blows within the Sovereign's personal courtyard, his divine wrath will erase us all!"

"I cannot move!" Ao-Bao wailed. "The dragon pressure and the beast mana have formed a spatial lock!"

The gryphon drew back its right talon, crackling with blinding lightning.

The Dragon King opened his jaws wide, the blue storm flame ready to unleash a wave of destruction.

Up on the porch, inside the swaying cloud-silk hammock, a single eyelid twitched.

Then, a loud storm of screeching, hissing, and buzzing electrical hums tore through his ears.

The hammock shook from the vibrating air.

The cedar siding rattled against his shoulders.

Felix opened his eyes beneath the brim of his straw hat, staring at the porch roof with cold, deadpan fury.

"Unbelievable," Felix muttered, his voice dripping with tired gamer irritation. "The companion AI in this game is completely bugged. Who programmed their idle pathfinding?"

He squinted over the edge of the woven fabric, his AetherDeck HUD flashing an alert:

【Target Feud: Thunder Gryphon vs. Azure Dragon King】 【Aggro Level: 99.8% (Territorial Collision Bug)】 【Collision Status: Broken Hitboxes Overlapping Near Porch Step】 【Inspector Note: Two apex monsters fighting over who gets the heated floor vent. Neither has enough sense to take turns. Recommended fix: Apply direct physical disciplinary input.】

He listened to the escalating hisses and snarls just five feet from his porch stairs.

"Every open-world game does this," Felix grumbled, rolling onto his side. "You recruit two high-tier combat pets, and instead of defending the base, they stand in the doorway pathfinding into each other until the collision engine glitches out."

He didn't get out of the hammock.

He didn't channel an imperial sword technique.

He didn't even sit up.

Felix simply reached his right hand down over the edge of the woven silk fabric.

His fingers brushed against the smooth wooden floorboards until they found his worn, faded straw slipper.

He picked up the slipper by the heel.

Deep within his dantian, his Sol-Class stellar core gave an imperceptible micro-pulse.

A fraction of his gravitational mass subtly aligned with the trajectory of his arm.

With a lazy, backhanded flick of his wrist, Felix tossed the worn straw slipper over the porch railing.

The shoe sailed through the air.

It was an ordinary slipper made of woven river reeds, frayed at the toe and slightly dusty from the garden path.

Yet as it flew through the swirling vortex of lightning and draconic flame, space itself parted before it.

The shrieking gale-force winds around the two beasts collapsed into dead air.

The crackling arcs of blue lightning vanished.

The ball of storm flame in the Dragon King’s throat simply snuffed out, as if pinched by an invisible thumb.

The straw slipper descended between the two apex monsters and struck the gravel lawn with a flat, unimpressive sound:

*Flump.*

A microscopic ring of gravitational pressure rippled outward from the slipper's sole.

The levitating pebbles dropped back to the dirt with a gentle rattle.

The howling wind died completely.

Then, from beneath the straw hat on the hammock, Felix’s flat, exhausted voice cut through the silence like a butcher’s cleaver:

"Keep it down."

A pause hung in the air.

"Noisemakers sleep outside the fence tonight."

The words were not loud.

They carried no grand divine resonance.

They were spoken with the dull, irritated authority of an older brother threatening to turn off the household router if his little siblings didn't stop shouting at their console.

Yet to the Azure Dragon King and the Imperial Thunder Gryphon, those words felt like a death sentence delivered by the ruler of the void.

*Outside the fence?!*

The Dragon King's soul went completely numb.

Beyond the cedar fence lay the cold, howling abyss of the Upper Strata, where the air was bitter and empty.

Outside the fence meant losing access to the sixty-nine-degree garden climate.

It meant losing the soothing thermal runoff of the hot spring trough.

Worst of all, it meant being separated from the ancestral golden egg pulsing beside the heat exhaust!

Beside him, the Thunder Gryphon’s golden feathers flattened instantly against its skin.

Its golden eagle eyes widened in sheer, trembling horror.

Outside the fence meant sleeping in the wet, wild mountain brush without fresh straw or luxury roost protection!

The two fearsome, realm-shaking beasts froze like scolded puppies caught chewing on their owner's boots.

The Dragon King slowly, carefully closed his mouth, swallowing the lingering sparks of storm flame.

He tucked his horns down, pulling his serpentine body backward with agonizing gentleness.

He looked at the worn straw slipper resting on the gravel.

*He extinguished our ancient domains with a discarded shoe,* the Dragon King thought, his scales quivering in holy terror. *A single shoe cast with boundless disdain! If we make another sound, he will banish our souls to the outer void!*

The Thunder Gryphon gave a tiny, pitiful whimper: *peep.*

It lowered its wings, carefully folded its talons beneath its chest, and pressed its belly flat into the clover.

Then, with immense, polite delicacy, the gryphon nudged a few inches to the left, leaving half the shaded area completely open.

The Dragon King blinked, swallowed his aristocratic pride, and quietly slithered into the remaining space.

He curled his long body into a neat, respectful spiral right beside the gryphon.

The two ancient rivals lay side by side in the cool cedar shade, their flanks pressed together in silent, cooperative dread.

Neither dared breathe too loudly.

Neither dared move a muscle.

The gryphon let out a tiny, suppressed breath through its nostrils, careful not to produce even a single violet ozone ring.

The dragon rested his chin against the grass, staring straight ahead with wide, obedient eyes.

Down by the shed, Lord Nether-Bane slowly poked his skeletal skull out from behind the door.

He stared at the two terrifying beasts lying together like tame sheep, his jawbone hanging open in stunned reverence.

"By the stars..." Nether-Bane whispered. "He disciplined the Ancient Dragon Sovereign and the Sky Gryphon with an old slipper. Not even the gods of the Netherworld commanded such absolute authority."

Up on the porch, Lyra Ashford leaned against the wall, clutching her chest as tears of spiritual ecstasy filled her eyes.

Her brush flew across her jade slip:

*The Sovereign's authority transcends all pride and lineage,* Lyra wrote, her hands shaking with divine awe.

*When gods clash and dragons roar, he raises no weapon of war.*

*He casts down the footwear of simplicity, and the heavens prostrate in silence.*

*To rule the cosmos is not to roar louder than the beast; it is to silence the beast with the weight of absolute detachment.*

On the hammock, Felix pulled his straw hat down until it covered his face.

The yard was once again blissfully quiet.

Barnaby’s clockwork gears ticked peacefully: *tick... tick... tick.*

The golden dragon egg hummed with its steady, rhythmic pulse beside the vent: *thump... thump... thump.*

Felix closed his eyes, his breathing slowing into a relaxed rhythm.

"That's more like it," Felix murmured into his pillow. "Good pets know when to share the screen."
