Chapter 145: The Rainy Day Barbecue

Late afternoon shadows stretched across Solitude Spire as the skybox darkened into gentle twilight.

From the high cloud banks of the Upper Strata, a soft, steady autumn rain began to fall.

The droplets tapped a peaceful, rhythmic melody against the cedar roof shingles: *pitter... patter... pitter... patter.*

Thanks to the heavy storm-slate splash board installed along the porch eaves, the rainwater broke into a clean sheet, flowing smoothly into the drainage ditch.

Along the perimeter fence, the fairy lights cast a warm, lavender and golden reflection across the shiny, wet clover.

Up on the porch rafters, Barnaby the clockwork owl remained perched in contented silence.

The thick black rubber stopper Felix had jammed into his mandibles held his copper tip tightly clamped shut.

Barnaby’s amber crystal lenses glowed with dull satisfaction, accompanied only by the steady *tick... tick... tick* of his internal chronometer.

Below the perch, the low cedar tea table stood firm and level, stabilized by Grandmaster Vivienne’s purple Sovereign Heart Seal jammed under the front leg.

On top of the table, pinned safely beneath the glowing Soul-Pearl paperweight, lay Felix's gacha banner calculations.

Right next to them, the white porcelain Infinite Cozy Teacup rested comfortably, its Nine-Sun tea steaming gently at precisely 68.5°C.

Beside the porch's brass heat exhaust vent, the ancestral golden dragon egg hummed with its steady, living pulse: *thump... thump... thump.*

Down in the cedar shade right next to the vent, the Imperial Thunder Gryphon and the Azure Dragon King were still curled up together.

After the slipper incident earlier that afternoon, neither beast dared contest the other's territory.

They lay flank to flank like polite roommates, snoozing peacefully in the warm exhaust air while the rain pattered against the grass.

In the hot spring trough, the three Dragon Elders floated shoulder-deep in the steaming mineral water, watching the gray mist drift over the cloud sea.

Up in his cloud-silk hammock, Felix Vance finally blinked his eyes open.

He stretched his arms, letting out a long, slow yawn that popped his spine.

"Rainy afternoons," Felix muttered, his voice hoarse with sleep. "Always makes me hungry."

Back in his old life, rainy days meant only one thing: street food.

Whenever cold rain washed the city streets, Felix would head down to the corner night market to grab skewers of spicy grilled meat, grilled mushrooms, and charred potato slices roasted over open coals.

He swung his legs out of the hammock, slipping his feet into his dry straw slippers.

"Lyra," Felix called out toward the kitchen doorway. "Do we have any charcoal left in the scullery bin?"

The kitchen door opened, and Lyra Ashford stepped onto the porch.

"Yes, Senior Brother," Lyra replied, bowing gracefully. "Lord Nether-Bane brought up a basket of aged iron-wood charcoal from the drying cellar this morning."

"Bring it out," Felix said. "And grab some skewers from the pantry. Let's make an early dinner."

Lyra’s eyes brightened.

Within five minutes, a small, portable iron brazier sat on the covered porch floorboards.

It was a simple, rectangular iron trough with a fine wire mesh grate resting across the top.

Felix dumped a mound of black iron-wood charcoal into the basin.

Instead of fumbling around with flint and steel, Felix raised his index finger.

Deep within his chest, a microscopic spark of solar heat traveled from his stellar core to his fingertip.

He gave the charcoal a casual, gentle tap: *tink.*

Instantly, the black charcoal ignited from the inside out, glowing with a deep, smokeless, cherry-red heat.

Lyra returned carrying a wide wooden cutting board loaded with fresh ingredients.

There were thick skewers of wild spirit-cloud mushrooms harvested from the pine trunks, their caps plump and velvety.

Beside them lay crisp rounds of golden radishes pulled fresh from the Sun-Lotus garden patch, sliced thin and threaded onto bamboo sticks.

Felix fetched his spice jars from the kitchen shelf.

He had coarse sea salt, ground mountain peppercorns, toasted sesame oil, and a generous jar of dried cumin seed.

Using a small bristle brush, Felix coated the mushroom skewers and radish slices in fragrant sesame oil.

Then he laid the skewers directly onto the hot wire grate.

*Szzzzzzzz.*

A sharp, mouthwatering sizzle filled the covered porch.

The sweet moisture inside the mushrooms caramelized against the hot metal.

The golden radish slices blistered, turning crisp and translucent with charred golden edges.

Felix grabbed a pinch of coarse salt and a heavy handful of ground cumin, sprinkling the spices evenly across the sizzling skewers.

*Fzzzzzt.*

The spices struck the hot oil, blooming with an intensely savory, smoky, earthy fragrance.

A thick plume of rich, spiced steam rose from the brazier, curling out into the cool, damp evening breeze.

Down by the porch vent, the Thunder Gryphon’s golden beak twitched.

The beast's eyelids fluttered.

Its nostrils flared, taking in a deep breath of the roasting cumin and toasted sesame oil.

*Snort?*

The gryphon sat bolt upright, its golden eagle eyes locking onto the portable brazier with wild, frantic hunger.

A thick string of clear drool began leaking from the corner of its curved beak, dripping onto the wet clover.

Beside the gryphon, the Azure Dragon King’s snout quivered.

The ancient sovereign opened both eyes, smelling the rich, charred spices drifting through the rain.

His draconic stomach let out a low, rumbling growl that sounded like distant thunder.

Torrents of saliva poured from between his fangs like twin waterfalls, soaking the grass beneath his chin.

Out in the hot spring trough, the three Dragon Elders stood straight up in the mineral water.

Their long azure necks craned toward the porch, their whiskers vibrating furiously.

"What... what is that scent?" Elder Ao-Bao gasped, his eyes bulging as drool bubbled around his lips.

"It smells of roasted earth and celestial spices!" Elder Ao-Jing wept, clutching his stomach. "My draconic soul is burning with unbearable desire!"

The five legendary creatures slowly, helplessly migrated toward the porch stairs.

They moved in complete, agonizing unison, their bodies trembling, their eyes locked onto the sizzling skewers.

They stopped at the bottom of the steps, sitting in a neat, pathetic row in the rain, staring up at Felix with desperate, starving eyes.

A small river of draconic saliva began pooling across the bottom flagstone.

Felix leaned over the wooden railing, holding a bamboo skewer in his hand.

He stared down at the row of apex predators.

He raised his AetherDeck, activating his Inspector HUD.

Felix lowered the slate, letting out a dry, exhausted sigh.

"Unbelievable," Felix muttered. "You guys look like stray dogs waiting under the kitchen table."

The Dragon King whimpered softly, his azure tail wagging slightly against the gravel.

"Look at this mess," Felix complained, pointing with his skewer at the puddle of drool on his walkway. "If you keep drooling on the flagstones, the gravel is going to wash out into the ditch."

Felix turned back to the brazier.

He sprinkled a final pinch of crushed pepper across the skewers, letting the heat toast the spices to perfection.

He pulled four large skewers off the grill for himself and Lyra, setting them onto a ceramic plate.

Then he scooped up the remaining dozen sizzling skewers on a wide wooden platter.

Felix walked to the edge of the porch and set the platter down at the top of the stairs, sliding it toward the bottom step.

"Here," Felix said dismissively. "Take them. Share them evenly. If anyone bites a skewer in half or starts a fight, you sleep out in the wet grass."

The dragons and the gryphon gasped in sacred disbelief.

"A-A gift of divine sustenance...?" Herald Ao-Kun whispered, tears mingling with his drool.

"Quickly! Before he revokes his grace!" the Dragon King urged, his claws trembling as he gently picked up a skewer of golden radish slices.

The gryphon carefully pinched a skewer of charred spirit-cloud mushrooms with the tip of its beak, making sure not to drop a single crumb.

The ancient Dragon King brought the blistered radish slice to his mouth.

He took a bite.

*Crunch.*

The crisp exterior gave way to a burst of sweet, rich juice.

The vegetable had absorbed the pure solar warmth of the garden, infusing its flesh with incredible vitality.

Then came the punch of the spices.

The toasted cumin struck his tongue with smoky, earthy warmth, while the cracked mountain peppercorns provided a sharp, tingly heat that made his scales shudder with pleasure.

The rich sesame oil bound the flavors together in an explosion of pure, savory bliss.

The Dragon King froze.

His golden eyes rolled back.

Tears of profound, culinary enlightenment streamed down his sapphire cheeks.

"By the ancestors..." the Dragon King wept, trembling from horns to tail. "What have I been eating for the past ten thousand years?!"

"Cold frost jade!" Ao-Bao cried, chewing on a mushroom cap with religious reverence. "Raw spiritual snow! We were eating dirt compared to this!"

"The harmony of the flame!" Ao-Jing sobbed, licking cumin dust from his claws. "He combined the heat of the hearth with the mortal spices of the earth! This is the true Dao of Sustenance!"

Beside them, the Thunder Gryphon let out a series of ecstatic, high-pitched chirps: *peep! chirp! purrrr!*

The massive golden beast crunched down the bamboo skewer whole, swallowed it in one gulp, and licked the wooden platter completely clean until the varnish gleamed.

Up on the porch, Lyra Ashford took a delicate bite of her grilled spirit mushroom.

Her violet eyes widened, a soft blush rising to her cheeks.

*The flavor is extraordinary...* Lyra thought, closing her eyes as the warm, savory spice danced across her palate.

*Senior Brother did not simply grill vegetables.*

*He channeled the balance of fire and wood, transforming common garden produce into an elixir that touches the mortal soul!*

*He feeds the high dragon lords not with rare celestial pills, but with the humble warmth of a rainy day meal.*

*To conquer a dragon's pride, one does not need a divine spear.*

*One only needs five skewers of spiced radish and the heart of the hearth!*

Lyra opened her eyes and bowed reverently toward Felix.

"Senior Brother’s culinary Dao is boundless," Lyra murmured softly. "The warmth of your hearth brings peace to heaven and earth."

Felix was leaning against the cedar porch post, chewing thoughtfully on a crispy, peppered radish slice.

"Could use a little more garlic," Felix muttered to himself, taking a sip of his Infinite Cozy Teacup.

*Slurp.*

The warm Nine-Sun tea washed down the spicy cumin, leaving a pleasant, lingering heat in his chest.

Down in the courtyard, the rain continued to fall softly across the mountain.

The fairy lights along the fence flickered with their gentle violet and amber glow.

Beside the brass vent, the golden dragon egg hummed with its steady, happy heartbeat: *thump... thump... thump.*

The dragon elders, the Dragon King, and the Thunder Gryphon lay huddled in a satisfied, drowsy heap at the bottom of the porch stairs, their bellies full of warm food, snoring softly in the rain.

Felix brought up his AetherDeck to review his evening log.
