Chapter 171: The Western Emperor's Secret Emissary

Morning arrived on Solitude Spire in a slow wash of pale amber sunlight.

High above the overgrown garden, the sky looked less like a battlefield and more like an upscale lantern festival.

One hundred and eight colossal Western Sky dreadnoughts hung suspended in a neat, circular ring around the peak.

Their massive void-propulsion thrusters were dead silent, stalled out and powerless.

Caught in the gravitational tether of Felix's 0.15 Dwarf-Class companion core, the multi-thousand-ton battleships gently drifted in a synchronized orbit.

Every twelve minutes, the lead flagship glided past the western cliff, its brass-plated armor catching the sunrise before circling behind the iron-pines.

Down on the cedar porch, Felix Vance reclined in his wooden chair, wearing his yellow dragon-scale poncho.

The waterproof scales were toasty and warm, radiating a gentle heat that kept his shoulders perfectly relaxed.

He reached down to the low table and picked up his white porcelain Infinite Cozy Teacup.

Beside his saucer, the purple Sovereign Heart Seal held the wobbly front table leg completely rigid against the porch floorboards.

A stack of trade ledgers and morning garden notes lay neatly pinned under the fist-sized, glowing Soul-Pearl paperweight.

Felix took a slow sip of his roasted barley and mountain honey tea.

*Slurp.*

The liquid washed over his tongue at precisely 68.5°C.

"Zero spills," Felix murmured with mild satisfaction. "Table is dead level. Good seal."

Up on his brass perch beside the front door, Barnaby the clockwork owl stood at rigid attention.

The black rubber stopper remained firmly clamped between his brass mandibles, locking his polished copper tip in place.

Deprived of the ability to screech morning motivational slogans, the owl simply clicked in steady, measured intervals:

*Tick... tick... tick...*

Along the cottage roofline, Patriarch Ao Cang lay coiled along the cedar ridge, resting his obsidian chin above the fluted brass downspout.

Behind him, the three azure flood dragons and the little emerald wyrm sunned their scales in the morning rays, occasionally puffing warm vapor to scare off stray bugs.

Down on the clover lawn, Lord Nether-Bane in his hemp apron leaned on an iron rake, admiring the spotless drainage ditches.

Near the tool shed, the Thunder Gryphon flapped its heavy wings once, tucked its beak into its chest feathers, and went back to snoring like an overgrown barnyard chicken.

Everything was blissfully, beautifully quiet.

Then the eastern cloud deck parted.

A sleek, needle-shaped void skiff dropped through the mist, trailing thin ribbons of black smoke.

It didn't fly toward the porch with arrogant war banners or blaring brass horns.

Instead, it drifted in at a crawl, its pilot visibly cutting the engine throttle to an absolute whisper.

The skiff touched down on the outer grass with the delicate caution of someone placing fine china onto a glass table.

A tall figure stepped out, clad in flowing midnight-silk robes embroidered with silver celestial serpents.

He wore an ebony mask that covered the upper half of his face, though his trembling lower lip was entirely visible.

This was Shadow Chancellor Morvath, personal confidant and supreme fixer to Emperor Kaelen of the Western Skies.

Morvath took three steps onto the lawn, looked up at the sky, and froze.

His knees wobbled violently beneath his silk robes.

Directly overhead, the pride of the Western Imperial Navy—one hundred and eight invincible ironclad dreadnoughts—were slowly rotating around the spire like wooden duck decoys in a shooting gallery.

Zero shots had been fired to capture them.

They were simply caught in an inescapable orbital dance, tethered to the young man sipping tea on the porch.

*Merciful Heavens,* Morvath thought, cold sweat drenching his collar. *The intelligence reports understated the horror.*

*He didn't just defeat our armada. He turned three trillion gold coins worth of imperial firepower into garden chimes.*

Morvath dropped directly to his knees on the damp clover, pressing his forehead against the earth.

Beside the porch railing, Lyra Ashford stepped forward, her hand resting lightly on the pommel of her rapier.

Her silver-trimmed uniform was immaculate, her eyes sharp and predatory.

"State your business in the sanctuary of Solitude Spire," Lyra declared, her voice echoing with cool noble authority. "Senior Brother Vance is taking his morning tea. If you bring violence, the skyway shall claim your bones."

Morvath raised his hands in frantic supplication, his face pale as chalk beneath his mask.

"No violence! By the ancestral stars, absolutely no violence!" Morvath stammered. "I am Morvath, Shadow Chancellor of the Western Imperial Court! I come under the white banner of absolute submission!"

Felix didn't even look up from his teacup.

He reached into his poncho pocket and pulled out his brass-cased AetherDeck.

The screen flickered to life with a familiar green chime:

DEV CONSOLE
STANDALONE HOST
[AETHERDECK OS: NPC ENCOUNTER DETECTED]
Target: Shadow Chancellor Morvath
Affiliation: Western Imperial Court
Disposition: Terrified / Groveling
Quest Type: Unsolicited Diplomacy Dialogue
Current Idle Storage: 100% [CAP REACHED]
System Warning: Excess celestial tribute cannot be banked.

Felix let out a tired, put-upon sigh.

"Why do these cutscenes always trigger right after breakfast?" Felix muttered. "There's never a 'Skip Dialogue' button when you actually need one."

Morvath crawled forward five paces, stopping near the porch steps.

With trembling hands, he produced a heavy scroll of beaten white gold.

"Lord Sovereign of the Dual Stars," Morvath pleaded. "Emperor Kaelen formally revokes all hostilities! He offers this Golden Imperial Pardon, freeing Solitude Spire from imperial jurisdiction forever!"

Lyra scoffed quietly, folding her arms.

"An Imperial Pardon?" Lyra said. "You presume to pardon the master of the heavens?"

Morvath swallowed hard, nodding frantically.

"An empty formality, I confess!" Morvath cried. "Which is why His Majesty also sent the treasury's finest tributes to ransom back our fleet!"

Morvath waved a trembling sleeve toward his skiff.

The cargo bay opened, revealing twelve ironbound chests glowing with blinding light.

"Ten thousand astral jade crystals! Three hundred bars of void gold! We beg only for the release of our ships!"

Felix squinted at the glowing chests in deep annoyance.

His passive Inspector HUD popped up:

【Item: Astral Jade Chests】 【Grade: High-Tier Cultivation Currency】 【Inventory Status: Full】 【Inspector Note: Heavy, shiny, and completely useless. You already have twelve million idle coins banked. Taking this junk will only clutter your porch.】

Felix shook his head slowly.

"Keep the rocks," Felix said, waving a limp hand. "My inventory is capped. I don't have stash tabs for shiny bricks."

Morvath's jaw dropped.

*He rejected ten thousand astral jades?!* Morvath thought in sheer terror. *Gold and spirit cores mean nothing to him!*

Lyra smiled coldly, nodding to herself.

*As expected of Senior Brother,* Lyra thought. *Mortal wealth is like dust to a sovereign who commands twin suns.*

Morvath began to tremble violently.

"Please, Great Sovereign!" Morvath begged. "Name your price! The Western Empire will give whatever you command!"

Felix rubbed the back of his neck, feeling the gentle, soothing lumbar purr of his binary core.

He looked over at the skiff's open cargo bay.

Behind the chests of radiant gold and shimmering jade, stacked against the back bulkhead, sat a messy pile of coarse burlap sacks tied with plain hemp rope.

A faint, sharp, salty-sweet aroma drifted on the morning breeze.

Felix's nose twitched.

His Inspector HUD shifted focus:

【Item: Sun-Dried Imperial Salted Plums (Vintage Harvest)】 【Grade: High Imperial Delicacy / Common Snack】 【Weight: Fifty 20-lb Burlap Sacks】 【Inspector Note: Sour, salty, perfectly cured stone-fruit from the Emperor's private orchard. Restores 0 HP, but provides extreme porch-napping satisfaction and excellent seed-spitting ballistics. Trade value: three useless floating battlecruisers.】

Felix's eyes widened by half a millimeter.

"Wait," Felix said, pointing a finger at the rear of the skiff. "What's in the brown bags?"

Morvath blinked, utterly confused.

"The... the brown bags?" Morvath asked hesitantly. "Those are provisions for the flight crew, my lord. Dried salted plums from the western foothills. The crew chews them to stave off altitude nausea."

"Salted plums," Felix repeated.

"Yes, my lord. Just... pickled fruit."

Felix looked up at the 108 dreadnoughts circling overhead.

They were loud.

Whenever the white dwarf gravity caught their titanium armor, they made an annoying metallic groaning sound that occasionally interrupted his light naps.

Getting rid of a few of them sounded like a massive quality-of-life improvement.

"Here's the trade," Felix said, his voice completely flat. "You give me all fifty bags of dried salted plums."

Morvath stared at him, unable to process the words. "The... plums?"

"All fifty bags," Felix said firmly. "In exchange, you can take three of those big metal blimps out of my sky. Whichever three are making that weird rattling noise on the north turn."

Silence fell over the garden.

Nether-Bane stopped his rake.

The dragons on the roof opened their golden slits.

Even Barnaby paused his clockwork ticking for a fraction of a second.

Morvath knelt frozen in the grass, his brain short-circuiting under the sheer weight of the transaction.

*Fifty bags of dried fruit... for three imperial dreadnoughts?!*

*A single dreadnought takes forty years and the GDP of an entire province to construct!*

*Why would he demand pickled plums?!*

Then, the terrible realization struck Morvath like a thunderbolt from the ninth heaven.

*Plums... the stone of the Western Tree of Life!*

*Salt... the ancient symbol of the earth's tears and the binding of blood oaths!*

*By demanding the humble provisions of our flight crew, he is stripping our empire of its mortal arrogance! He is teaching us that survival comes from the soil, not from iron hulls!*

*And by taking fifty sacks, he is claiming the fifty leylines of our western border! It is a profound, terrifying metaphysical contract!*

Morvath's face turned completely white.

He slammed his forehead against the clover with a loud, wet smack.

"The boundless wisdom of the Great Sovereign is deeper than the abyssal ocean!" Morvath shouted, his voice trembling with manic devotion. "We accept! We accept the Sacred Plum Exchange!"

Felix took another sip of his tea.

"Cool. Drag the sacks up to the porch. Don't drop them in the mud."

Morvath scrambled to his feet like a madman, sprinting toward his skiff.

Ignoring the chests of gold and jade, the Shadow Chancellor of the Western Empire hoisted the heavy burlap sacks onto his own silk-clad shoulders, hauling them one by one onto Felix's porch.

Lyra stood beside the railing, watching the spectacle with shining eyes.

*To trade weapons of planetary conquest for bags of simple fruit...* Lyra thought, her chest tight with emotion. *Senior Brother has completely inverted the logic of war. He has humiliated the Western Court without drawing a single blade.*

*He has forced an empire to measure its survival in dried plums.*

Within twenty minutes, fifty bulging sacks of imperial salted plums were neatly stacked along the porch wall.

Felix reached into his pocket and tapped a single icon on the AetherDeck:

DEV CONSOLE
STANDALONE HOST
[ORBITAL TRAFFIC MANAGER: RELEASE PROTOCOL]
Selected Targets: 3x Western Dreadnoughts (Grid 4, 7, 9)
Gravitational Tether: Disengaged
Drift Vector: Western Cloud Corridor
Status: Cleared for Towing

High above, three massive ironclad dreadnoughts smoothly detached from the orbital ring.

Their drifting hulls floated outward into the open sky, gently bobbing on the cloud currents like released corks.

Morvath fell to his knees one final time, clutching his chest.

"The Western Skies shall remember this boundless mercy for ten thousand generations!" Morvath wept.

"Yeah, yeah," Felix said, waving him away. "Just make sure the tow cables don't clip my pine trees on the way out. And tell your emperor that if he comes back, bring roasted cashews next time."

Morvath bowed three more times, scrambled into his skiff, and fled into the western horizon at full throttle.

Felix leaned down, untied the twine on the nearest sack, and pulled out a plump, dark purple salted plum.

He popped it into his mouth.

A wave of intense sour-salty tang exploded across his palate, followed by a rich, savory sweetness.

Felix leaned back into his recliner, letting out a long, luxurious sigh.

"Good trade," Felix murmured, his eyes drifting shut. "Three fewer noisy ships, and fifty sacks of free snacks. Best gacha payout all week."

Beside him, Barnaby resumed his steady rhythm:

*Tick... tick... tick...*

And the morning sun shone warm over Solitude Spire.
