Chapter 172: The Plum Seed Catapult

Early afternoon heat settled across the floating peaks of Solitude Spire.

The sky was vast, clear, and quiet.

High above the cedar rooftop, the remaining one hundred and five Western dreadnoughts continued their slow, lazy circle around the peak.

Down on the porch, fifty coarse burlap sacks of Imperial Salted Plums were stacked neatly against the wall.

Felix Vance sat slouched in his wooden recliner, wearing his yellow dragon-scale poncho.

The warm scales hummed with a gentle, soothing warmth that kept his back muscles completely relaxed.

On the low cedar table beside him, a wide ceramic bowl was filled to the brim with dark purple, wrinkled salted plums.

Underneath the table, the purple Sovereign Heart Seal held the wobbly front leg perfectly motionless against the floorboards.

Beside the plum bowl, the fist-sized Soul-Pearl paperweight glowed with a faint, milky iridescence, keeping a stack of garden trade ledgers from fluttering in the mountain breeze.

Felix reached out with lazy fingers, picked up a plum, and tossed it into his mouth.

*Crunch-squish.*

The dried fruit was intensely sour, deeply salty, and followed by a rich, savory sweetness that made his jaw tingle.

Felix chewed slowly, his eyes half-closed.

Beside the table, his white porcelain Infinite Cozy Teacup steamed gently.

He picked it up and took a steady sip of roasted barley and mountain honey tea.

*Slurp.*

The liquid hit his throat at exactly 68.5°C, perfectly cutting through the tartness of the pickled plum.

"Whoever pickled these knows what they're doing," Felix mumbled. "Good balance. Salt ratio is solid."

Up on his brass perch, Barnaby the clockwork owl stood as still as a statue.

The black rubber stopper was wedged tightly into his brass beak, holding his polished copper tip locked in place.

Every few seconds, his internal gears produced a crisp, metallic click:

*Tick... tick... tick...*

Along the cedar roofline above, Patriarch Ao Cang and the three azure flood dragons lay sunning their bellies.

The ancient wyrm rested his obsidian chin right above the fluted brass downspout, sighing content puffs of warm steam into the clean mountain air.

Down in the garden, Lord Nether-Bane leaned on his rake, humming a pirate shanty while watching the Sun-Lotus Cabbage slowly absorb solar rays.

Near the luxury coop, the Thunder Gryphon had its wings splayed out across the clover, looking entirely like an overweight golden rooster sleeping off a heavy lunch.

Lyra Ashford stood near the porch railing, holding a small silver ledger and a horsehair brush.

She had spent the last two hours carefully inspecting each of the fifty sacks of imperial plums.

Her brows were furrowed in intense contemplation, her silver-trimmed noble tunic perfectly pressed.

"Senior Brother," Lyra said softly, her voice filled with deep reverence. "I have verified the shipment. Each sack bears the imperial cipher of the Western Sun Orchard. The celestial leylines woven into the hemp fabric are authentic."

Felix swallowed the plum's sweet-tart flesh.

"It's just dried fruit, Lyra," Felix said, rolling the hard wooden stone across his tongue. "You don't need to do a full forensic audit."

Lyra offered a knowing, disciplined smile.

*Just dried fruit,* Lyra thought, her heart racing with admiration. *He speaks so casually, yet every gesture carries the weight of a heavenly sovereign.*

*By taking fifty sacks of the Western Empire's royal tribute, he has symbolically seized the harvest of their central plains.*

*The Western Emperor must be trembling in his palace right now, contemplating the fragility of his mortal dynasty.*

Felix wasn't contemplating mortal dynasties.

He was contemplating a much more urgent problem: inventory management.

Specifically, the hard plum seed currently sitting in his mouth.

The seed was about the size of a large almond, pointed at both ends, and completely stripped of flesh.

The proper place for fruit waste was the wooden compost bin beside the tool shed.

Felix glanced across the yard.

The compost bin was roughly twenty yards away.

Walking twenty yards meant pushing himself up from his comfortable recliner, walking down three stone steps, crossing the gravel path, lifting the heavy wooden lid, dropping the seed, and walking all the way back.

Felix felt his mental stamina bar instantly deplete by twenty percent just thinking about it.

"Too much travel time," Felix murmured to himself. "Not wasting stamina on an empty walk."

The porch railing was right there, only six feet away.

Beyond the railing lay the boundless open sky, plunging thousands of fathoms down into the cloud ocean.

Felix leaned his head back against the cushion, took a shallow breath, and pursed his lips.

*Ptooey.*

The hard plum seed shot out from between his teeth.

It left his lips at a completely normal, lazy human velocity—roughly fifteen miles per hour.

It arched gently over the wooden railing, spinning end over end as it cleared the cedar edge of the porch.

Under normal planetary physics, the plum seed would have followed a simple parabolic arc, tumbling down into the distant white mists below.

However, Solitude Spire did not operate under normal planetary physics.

Deep within Felix's dantian, the 1.0-Earth-Mass Sol-Class stellar core hummed in eternal, tight orbit with its 0.15 Dwarf-Class companion.

The white dwarf companion was small, cold, and unimaginably dense.

Its localized gravitational footprint did not spread across thousands of leagues like an open star.

Instead, it wrapped around Solitude Spire in a series of razor-thin, hyper-compressed orbital shear bands.

As the plum seed sailed over the cedar railing, its tiny trajectory happened to clip the innermost gravitational contour of the white dwarf's Roche boundary.

Astrophysical slingshot mechanics engaged.

In orbital mechanics, when a small projectile grazes the gravity well of a rapidly rotating degenerate mass, it undergoes extreme hyperbolic momentum transfer.

The plum seed did not fall.

It fell *around* the white dwarf's invisible gravitational curve.

*ZIIIIIP.*

The seed was violently hooked by the tidal field, whipped around the localized space-time vortex, and slingshotted outward into the open skybox.

Its velocity went from fifteen miles per hour to Mach 80 in zero point zero zero two seconds.

The sudden, violent acceleration instantly compressed the surrounding atmospheric column.

The air molecules around the plum seed ionized under extreme friction, creating an incandescent purple sheath of high-energy plasma.

A piercing, razor-sharp sonic crack split the afternoon air:

*CRACK-WHIP!*

The plum seed vanished into the western horizon, leaving behind a glowing, needle-thin streak of ionized violet light that cut through the cloud sea like a laser beam.

Eighty miles to the west, high above the Great Western Cloud Corridor, a very different scene was unfolding.

A massive, roiling storm cloud of oily black mist was advancing through the skies, reeking of blood and brimstone.

At the center of the demonic cloud flew the Nine-Headed Nether-Crow Sovereign.

This was an ancient Tier 6 Calamity Beast, a colossal avian terror with a four-hundred-foot wingspan of razor-sharp obsidian feathers and nine vulture heads crowned with demonic bone crests.

The Nether-Crow Sovereign had spent three hundred years sealed in the abyssal valleys of the western wastes.

Taking advantage of the Western Empire's fleet mobilization, the demon beast had broken its ancient seals, gathering ten thousand blood-crows into a terrifying war-flock to raid the unprotected eastern skyways.

All nine of its vulture heads shrieked in discordant, blood-chilling harmony:

"The skyways are defenseless! The Western Armada has vanished into the mist! We shall feast upon the flesh of the Seven Spires! Our black wings shall blot out the light of the sun forever!"

The ten thousand demonic crows cawed in frenzied bloodlust, their black miasma plunging the sky into premature twilight.

The Nether-Crow Sovereign spread its massive talons, preparing to dive into the merchant shipping lanes.

Then, from eighty leagues away, a needle of violet light arrived.

There was no warning.

There was no ambient fluctuation of spiritual Qi.

There was only a blinding, instantaneous flash that tore across the western heavens at eighty times the speed of sound.

*BOOM!*

The Imperial Salted Plum seed, encased in a hyper-velocity sheath of white-hot plasma, struck the Nether-Crow Sovereign squarely in the center of its demonic breastbone.

The kinetic energy transfer was absolute and catastrophic.

At Mach 80, a dried plum seed possessed the kinetic penetrative force of a five-ton solid tungsten rod fired from an orbital railgun.

The demonic sovereign's nine heads didn't even have time to shriek.

Its four-hundred-foot body was instantly disintegrated at the molecular level, blown into a fine mist of carbon and purple fire.

The kinetic shockwave expanded outward in an immense, perfect sphere of compressed atmospheric pressure.

*SHK-BOOOOOOM!*

The blast wave swept through the ten thousand blood-crows, shredding their wings and vaporizing their black miasma in a fraction of a heartbeat.

The entire cloud bank for forty leagues around was blasted apart, leaving a pristine, circular window of blue sky in the western horizon.

High in the skybox, nothing remained of the ancient Calamity Beast except a faint whiff of roasted fruit and singed feathers.

Back on the porch of Solitude Spire, the thin violet streak of ionized air slowly faded from the atmosphere.

Lyra Ashford stood frozen at the railing.

Her silver ledger had slipped from her numb fingers, landing softly on the floorboards.

Her violet eyes were wide, dilated with overwhelming, paralyzing shock.

She looked at the distant, needle-thin hole in the clouds eighty miles away.

Then she looked back at Senior Brother Felix, who was currently reaching into the ceramic bowl to grab a second salted plum.

Lyra's breath hitched in her throat.

Her chest heaved with terrifying, suffocating realization.

*He... he didn't miss.*

*He didn't just spit out a seed.*

*The Nine-Headed Nether-Crow Sovereign had broken its seal in the western corridor... our intelligence guild filed reports about it three days ago!*

*Senior Brother Vance never leaves his porch, yet his celestial divine sense covers the entire continental firmament!*

*He knew the demon lord was advancing upon the eastern trade lanes.*

*He didn't summon a sword.*

*He didn't channel a grand apocalyptic array.*

*He used the gravitational slingshot of his twin stars, calculated the Coriolis drift across eighty leagues of open sky, and executed an ancient Calamity Sovereign... using a discarded fruit stone!*

*A plum seed!*

Lyra's knees trembled.

She fell into a deep, formal court bow, her forehead nearly touching the cedar boards of the porch.

*This is the true summit of the Void Dao,* Lyra thought, her mind spinning with boundless, terrified reverence. *To slay a continent-destroying beast with a speck of organic rubbish, without even disturbing the steam on his teacup!*

*To him, ancient demon gods are nothing more than flies to be swatted between afternoon snacks!*

"Senior Brother..." Lyra whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "Your celestial discernment... it leaves this disciple in utter awe."

Felix paused, his second salted plum halfway to his mouth.

He looked over at Lyra, who was bowing toward him as if he were an ancient stone statue.

"Why are you bowing at my slippers, Lyra?" Felix asked, blinking. "Did you drop your brush?"

A soft *ping* chimed from the pocket of his yellow poncho.

Felix pulled out his AetherDeck to see what had popped up:

[AETHERDECK OS: CATACOMB CRAWLER - MINI-GAME ALERT]
STANDALONE HOST
Stray Kinetic Projectile Logged: Plum Seed (Stone Grade)
Target Struck: Rogue Abyssal Crow (Level 58 Calamity Boss)
Hit Calculation: 100% Critical Kinetic Penetration
Result: Target Annihilated
[AUTO-LOOT CLAIMED]:
• 45x Singed Obsidian Feathers (Vendor Trash)
• 1x Cracked Crow Core (Worth 3 Copper Coins)
Note: Kinetic projectile registered a 3.4-second delay.
Server latency currently fluctuating.

Felix stared down at the screen, letting out a heavy, irritated sigh.

His passive Inspector HUD hovered over the notification:

【Event: Stray Ballistic Trajectory】 【Target: Western Sky Demon Fiend】 【Threat Level: Deleted】 【Inspector Note: You successfully threw out a piece of fruit waste. Due to minor gravitational anomalies around your chair, the seed was accelerated to orbital velocities and struck a random oversized bird eighty leagues away. Drops are complete garbage.】

Felix rolled his eyes and tapped the screen to dismiss the notification.

"Three-point-four seconds of hit-registration delay," Felix muttered in disgust. "The netcode in this realm is an absolute joke. You'd think with twin stars running in my chest, I'd at least get decent ping."

He popped the second salted plum into his mouth.

He chewed it down, savoring the salty tang.

He reached for his Infinite Cozy Teacup and took another warm, soothing sip at 68.5°C.

"And these plums are definitely too salty," Felix grumbled, leaning deeper into the cushions of his recliner. "Next time Morvath comes crawling back, I'm making him bring candied ginger."

Above him on the roof, Patriarch Ao Cang blew a warm, draconic puff of smoke toward the western horizon, quietly agreeing with the Master's assessment.

On his brass perch, Barnaby clicked softly:

*Tick... tick... tick...*

And the warm afternoon drifted peacefully on.
