Felix delivered the money in a box.
For several minutes, he believed this made the errand complete.
The advance had been released that morning against the authorized current wage schedule. He carried the direction, the recipient list and a chest whose contents were considerably more satisfying than the papers that had produced them.
Vera counted the amount, checked the list and signed the receipt.
“Where’s the bearing?”
Felix looked at the chest.
No bearing had appeared between the rolls of coins.
“I brought the payment.”
