Chapter 186: Void Jellyfish in the Rain Barrel

The afternoon sun cast long, lazy shadows across the cedar floorboards of Solitude Spire.

Felix Vance strolled down the porch steps, carrying a half-eaten sesame cracker in his left hand.

His straw slippers clicked gently against the stone pavers as he walked toward the corner of the eaves.

Beneath the large copper downspout where Patriarch Ao Cang usually rested his obsidian snout, an ancient cedar rain barrel stood quietly in the shade.

The barrel was three feet deep, reinforced with thick iron hoops, and caught the clean runoff from the morning mist.

Felix stepped up to the rim, intending to rinse a stray speck of radish juice from his fingers.

He stopped, peering down into the clear mountain water.

Floating gently in the barrel were three bizarre creatures.

They looked like miniature, translucent umbrellas roughly the size of porcelain teacups.

Their bells glowed with a faint, iridescent violet luminescence, pulsing in slow, rhythmic expansions and contractions.

Dozens of gossamer tentacles, fine as spun spider silk and glittering with tiny specks of starlight, drifted lazily behind them in the water.

They looked completely weightless, defying ordinary hydrodynamics as they drifted in circular orbits around the center of the barrel.

Felix blinked, tilting his head.

"Huh," Felix murmured, leaning his elbows on the wooden rim. "Look at that. When did Pocket Garden add cosmetic water decorations?"

He pulled his AetherDeck from his pocket, tapping the screen with a flour-dusted knuckle.

A small notification prompt popped up immediately:

Felix smiled faintly, a warm sense of gaming nostalgia washing over him.

"Cute," Felix said. "Just like the aquarium mini-game in my old phone sim. You unlock a barrel, and the system spawns three decorative squishies to make the yard look lively."

He crumbled the corner of his sesame cracker between his thumb and forefinger, sprinkling a small shower of golden flakes across the surface of the water.

The three tiny jellyfish immediately drifted upward, their glowing bells undulating with excited pulses of violet light.

Tiny, starry tentacles reached out, catching the cracker crumbs and pulling them into their translucent bell cavities with evident delight.

*Plip... plip.*

One of the little jellyfish bumped its soft bell against the tip of Felix's submerged finger, vibrating like a purring kitten.

Felix chuckled, tapping the creature's gelatinous head.

"Good little squishy," Felix muttered. "Eat your carbs. Don't go nibbling on Nether-Bane's cabbage roots."

Across the courtyard, Lyra Ashford walked out of the tool shed carrying an armful of dried firewood.

She glanced toward the rain barrel.

The moment her lilac eyes caught the pulsing violet glow beneath the water, the firewood slipped from her grasp, clattering loudly against the stone pavers.

Her face drained of all color.

Her breath seized in her throat.

"The... the Void Nether-Medusa..." Lyra whispered, her voice choking in pure, paralyzed horror.

Every ancient bestiary of the Imperial Sky-Fleet contained a chapter dedicated to the terrors of the Abyssal Void Sea.

And near the top of the forbidden list was the Nether-Medusa.

Born in the cold, pressurized depths beneath the firmament, these primordial specters were known as the *Dementors of the Stars*.

A single adult Nether-Medusa could dissolve the spiritual consciousness of an entire legion of Astral Knights.

Their tentacles did not inject venom.

They injected dimensional rot—a horrific, non-Euclidean corrosive that melted human souls into formless void-slime within three breaths.

Even high-sovereign archmages would construct twelve layers of celestial barriers before attempting to capture a dead specimen for alchemical research.

Yet there, in an ordinary cedar rain barrel beneath the eaves...

Senior Brother was casually leaning over the rim, crumbling a half-eaten mortal pastry into the water.

And the three horrifying entities of the outer abyss were swimming in circles like domestic goldfish, playfully nuzzling his bare fingertips.

Lyra’s knees gave out.

She sank onto the courtyard flagstones, her heart pounding with such violent force she could hear it roaring in her ears.

'He... he treats the Scourge of the First Era like decorative carp...' Lyra thought, tears of existential vertigo stinging her eyes. 'They consume the thoughts of mortal empires, yet he feeds them sesame crackers!'

She looked closely at the water.

Beneath the clear mountain runoff, the three jellyfish were not releasing dimensional rot.

Instead, the sheer, crushing density of Felix’s internal white dwarf companion core was permeating the water molecules, compressing the atmospheric pressure within the barrel into a perfect, soothing cradle.

The deadly psychic stinging cells of the jellyfish had been gently massaged into submission by the localized gravity well.

They were completely calm.

Tamed by warmth, gravity, and sesame seeds.

Felix turned around, hearing the firewood drop onto the pavers.

He saw Lyra sitting on the grass with her mouth slightly open, staring at him.

"Lyra," Felix said, wiping his fingers on his apron. "You dropped the kindling. Be careful. If those logs get wet, they won't burn properly tonight."

Lyra scrambled forward on her knees, pressing her hands against the cool stone.

"Senior Brother!" Lyra gasped, her voice trembling with religious ecstasy. "Those... those entities in the barrel... they are the dread Nether-Medusae of the Abyssal Rift! One drop of their secretion can melt the soul-cores of an entire kingdom! How... how have you pacified their primordial bloodthirst?!"

Felix looked at her, then looked back at the rain barrel.

He sighed, shaking his head.

【Item: Domesticated Abyssal Nether-Medusa】 【Species: Bio-Luminescent Aquatic Pet】 【Current Mood: Extremely Happy (Ate Sesame Cracker)】 【Threat Level: Harmless Yard Cosmetic】 【Inspector Note: Highly drama-prone Junior Sister believes these harmless water bubbles are continent-destroying super-weapons. In reality, they just eat algae and look pretty at night. Sells for zero gold. Do not boil for soup; tastes like salty gelatin.】

"Lyra, they're just water bugs," Felix said patiently, resting his hands inside his wide linen sleeves. "They eat breadcrumbs and keep the water clear of mosquito larvae. Stop reading weird fantasy novels. You're giving yourself unnecessary anxiety."

Lyra gasped softly, her soul trembling.

'Water bugs...' she repeated in her mind, her awe expanding into the infinite heavens. 'To a mortal, they are calamities that wipe out bloodlines. But to Senior Brother, whose core burns with the fire of a billion suns, they are merely tiny larvae that clean his rain barrel!'

She bowed deeply, her silver bangs brushing the clover.

"This disciple understands!" Lyra proclaimed with burning devotion. "The ferocious dragon is but an earthworm before the Great Dao! Even the horrors of the Outer Dark must learn humility and eat crumbs from the Master's hand!"

Felix rubbed his temples, letting out a long, weary groan.

"Sure, kid. Whatever. Just pick up the firewood."

He shuffled back toward the porch steps, his straw slippers clicking lazily against the stone.

Directly above the rain barrel, the heavy copper downspout creaked softly as Patriarch Ao Cang shifted his eight-foot obsidian body.

The ancient dragon patriarch poked his horned snout over the edge of the gutter, sniffing the rising vapor from the barrel with deep draconic suspicion.

A tiny wisp of azure flame leaked from his nostril, fizzling out harmlessly in the cool mountain air.

Down in the water, the largest of the three violet jellyfish floated up to the surface.

It bumped its soft, translucent bell against Ao Cang's black dragon whiskers, vibrating with a gentle, curious hum.

Ao Cang blinked his massive slitted golden eyes.

He did not roar.

He did not summon thunderous storms.

He simply pulled his whiskers back by half an inch, settled his chin back onto the polished downspout bracket, and let out a soft, contented draconic snort.

If the master allowed the little floating violet mushrooms to live in the rain barrel, then they were part of the household.

And Ao Cang’s job as Chief Eaves Guardian was to make sure pine needles didn't fall on their heads.

Felix climbed the cedar steps and sat down heavily in his wicker armchair.

He kicked the low cedar table with his slipper.

Beneath the front left leg, Grandmaster Vivienne's purple Sovereign Heart Seal held the table as immovable as a mountain.

"Best table shim in the mortal realms," Felix murmured, resting his elbows on the smooth timber.

He picked up the AetherDeck, tapping the glowing screen to see how his passive yields were performing.

Felix nodded in quiet satisfaction.

"A ten percent bonus to passive mana purity just for feeding three cracker crumbs to some jellyfish," Felix muttered, his thumb hovering over [3. SLEEP]. "That’s what I call a high-return investment. Casual gaming at its finest."

He picked up his chipped porcelain mug, taking a leisurely sip of his warm roasted barley tea.

The tea was locked at an exact sixty-eight-point-five degrees Celsius by the ambient gravitational gradient of his dantian.

It was smooth, fragrant, and hit his throat with soothing warmth.

Down in the garden bed, Lord Nether-Bane was watching the rain barrel with hollow, emerald-glowing eye sockets.

The ancient Ghost King approached the barrel with agonizing care, peering over the edge.

One of the little violet jellyfish pulsed gently, blowing a harmless bubble of glowing void-foam that popped against the iron rim.

Nether-Bane let out a low, raspy chuckle that rattled his skeletal ribs.

"Hear that, lads?" Nether-Bane whispered to his two ghostly corsairs. "The Master has tamed the soul-eaters. From now on, when you rinse the watering cans, don't you dare splash the Master's new goldfish. If one of them loses a tentacle, he'll make us rake the bottom of the void."

"Aye, Lord Captain," the corsairs whispered in unison, clutching their hemp aprons with devout care.

Up on the cedar roof beam, Barnaby the Clockwork Owl puffed out his brass feathers.

The black rubber stopper in his beak was firmly seated, and his polished copper tip caught the warm afternoon light.

*Tick... tock... click.*

The water in the barrel continued to glow with soft, beautiful violet light.

The void jellyfish drifted peacefully in their cedar home.

And on Solitude Spire, the cosmic abyss had officially been downgraded into a backyard garden feature.
