Chapter 188: Lord Nether-Bane's Garden Promotion

The late afternoon light filtered through the canopy of Solitude Spire, painting the courtyard in warm streaks of amber and honey.

Near the garden shed, where Mor'Ghulath and his abyssal officers had neatly stacked their tribute crates, Lord Nether-Bane stood with an iron garden trowel in his skeletal hand.

The ancient Ghost King’s clean hemp apprentice apron was tied snugly around his translucent waist.

He knelt beside the open crate containing solidified void-ice and damp abyssal bio-sludge—organic sediment scooped from the seabed of the Outer Dark.

To mortal cultivators, this dark sludge was an unholy venom that withered meridians and melted the dantian.

Yet Nether-Bane, having spent three weeks observing Felix’s composting techniques, saw only rich, unrefined nitrogen and cosmic trace minerals.

"Soft as river silt," Nether-Bane murmured, his hollow eye sockets flickering with green spectral excitement. "Packed with negative-mass phosphorus and celestial potassium. If we blend two shovelfuls of this abyssal muck with the master's discarded tea leaves..."

He looked back at his two ghostly deckhands, who were standing at attention with wooden buckets of cured sheep manure.

"Mix it, lads!" Nether-Bane ordered in an eager whisper. "Three parts river loam, two parts leaf mold, and one generous scoop of demon sediment! Aerate the pile until it steams!"

The ghostly corsairs set to work with frantic enthusiasm, their spectral shovels churning the mixture into a rich, dark compost that glowed with a faint, bioluminescent violet-gold shimmer.

Nether-Bane carefully carried a wooden trough of the enriched compost over to the main raised bed.

With agonizing gentleness, he laid a two-inch layer around the roots of the five-star Sun-Lotus Cabbages and the Golden Sun-Radishes.

The moment the dark compost touched the soil, the garden responded with a sudden, breathtaking transformation.

The rich, warm thermal radiance from Felix’s internal Sol-Class stellar core—radiating continuously through the porch floorboards—interacted with the negative-mass nutrients.

The golden leaves of the Sun-Lotus Cabbages didn't just grow.

They blossomed.

The broad cabbage heads unfurled into twelve concentric layers of crystalline leaves, shifting from bright solar gold to a breathtaking sunset gradient of amber, rose, and deep twilight violet.

Beside them, the golden radishes thrust upward from the soil, their smooth skins glowing like polished topaz, crowned with emerald-violet leaves that hummed with pure, soothing vitality.

A warm, aromatic vapor drifted across the courtyard.

It did not smell of pungent manure or decay.

It smelled like roasted chestnuts, fresh mountain honey, and crisp autumn morning dew.

The localized climate around the garden bed locked itself into an immutable, thermodynamic harmony.

Sixty-nine point five degrees Fahrenheit.

Constant.

Unshakable.

Up on the porch, Felix Vance stirred in his hammock, stretching his arms inside the loose sleeves of his new violet void-silk lounging robe.

He sniffed the air.

"Smells good," Felix muttered, swinging his legs over the edge.

He slipped his feet into his straw slippers, shuffling down the wooden stairs to inspect the garden.

He walked up to the raised bed, where Nether-Bane was standing at rigid attention, his skeletal hands clasped tightly against his hemp apron.

"Master!" Nether-Bane croaked, bowing until his spine made a faint clicking sound. "This servant has enriched the soil with the abyssal mineral deposits! The harvest has undergone an unprecedented evolution!"

Felix tilted his straw hat back, squinting down at the radiant, jewel-like cabbages.

He pulled the AetherDeck from his pocket to verify the crop status.

Felix’s eyebrows rose in genuine, mild appreciation.

"Twelve stars?" Felix murmured. "I thought the game capped vegetable rarity at five. That's a pretty sweet hidden upgrade."

He bent down and gently gripped the broad foliage of a ripe golden radish.

With a light tug, the root slid out of the dark loam with a soft, satisfying *shhhhk*.

The radish was roughly the size of a wine bottle, perfectly cylindrical, with a translucent skin that glowed like molten sunlight trapped in glass.

Felix pulled an ordinary pocket knife from his sash, sliced a thin, translucent wafer from the tip of the radish, and popped it into his mouth.

*CRUNCH.*

The sound was so loud, sharp, and clean that it echoed across the entire courtyard.

Felix’s eyes widened slightly.

The flavor hit his palate with explosive freshness.

It was sweet, crisp, and remarkably refreshing, with a gentle peppery warmth that blossomed across his tongue, followed immediately by a cool, lingering minty finish that cleared his sinuses.

A wave of soothing warmth spread down into his chest, perfectly aligning with the 18-hour spin of his white dwarf core.

He checked the Inspector HUD.

【Item: 12-Star Abyssal-Sun Radish (Fresh Cut)】 【Taste Profile: Supreme Sweet-Spicy Harmony】 【Crunch Factor: SSS-Rank】 【Inspector Note: Combines the thermonuclear heat of a main-sequence star with the cryogenic chill of the outer dark. "Now that is a radish," Felix said, nodding three times in deep, sincere approval. "Not woody at all. Perfect water content. Nether-Bane, you knocked it out of the park."

Nether-Bane froze.

His hollow eye sockets flared with blinding emerald flames.

His spectral jaw trembled so violently that his corsairs had to steady his shoulders.

"The... the Master... approves?" Nether-Bane choked out, tears of ghostly ectoplasm forming in his eyes.

"Yeah. Great soil work," Felix said casually, wiping his knife blade on a clean rag. "From now on, you're officially promoted. No more junior apprentice title. You're the Senior Head Groundskeeper of Solitude Spire."

Felix reached into the deep pocket of his void-silk robe and pulled out a small, dried candied plum wrapped in wax paper—a leftover snack from yesterday’s tea tray.

He tossed it to Nether-Bane.

"Here's your quarterly bonus. Don't eat it all in one sitting."

Nether-Bane caught the candied plum in his trembling skeletal palms as if catching the beating heart of a primordial god.

He dropped to both knees on the stone pavers, pressing the candied fruit against his forehead, weeping openly.

"Senior Groundskeeper..." Nether-Bane wept, his voice echoing across the pines. "This unworthy ghost... an outcast of the Nether-Sea... has been granted the title of Senior Guardian of the Sacred Soil! I swear upon my shattered soul-core, no weed shall ever sprout! No pest shall ever crawl! The Master's vegetables shall reign supreme across the heavens!"

Felix stared at the weeping ghost, then looked at his bamboo chopsticks.

"Man, you really like plums," Felix muttered under his breath. "Whatever. Wash three more radishes and bring them up to the kitchen. I’m making pickled salad for dinner."

He turned and shuffled back up the porch steps, his straw slippers clicking comfortably against the cedar wood.

He sat back down at the low cedar table, resting his feet upon the floorboards.

Under the front left leg, the Sovereign Heart Seal gleamed faintly with imperial violet light, locking the table in place so firmly that even a localized earthquake couldn't induce a wobble.

Felix pulled an ordinary wooden cutting board and a heavy ceramic bowl from beneath the side bench.

He brought out a small jar of rice vinegar, a pinch of coarse sea salt, and a handful of toasted white sesame seeds.

As he began slicing the golden radish into wafer-thin medallions, the kitchen porch was filled with the crisp, rhythmic *tock-tock-tock* of his knife against the oak board.

Every thin slice glowed with gentle amber light, releasing a fragrance so pure and sweet that the air on the porch seemed to crystallize into liquid spiritual dew.

"A splash of vinegar, a drop of sesame oil, and ten minutes to marinate," Felix murmured to himself, tossing the slices with his chopsticks. "That’s all you need for an elite side dish. People spend hours simmering complex broths when simple raw crunch is ten times better."

Meanwhile, three floating islands away, the Astral Observatory had descended into another frenzy of scholarly panic.

Chief Alchemist Hesper sprinted onto the observation terrace, holding a glowing bronze divination compass that was spinning so rapidly the needle whistled.

"Chancellor!" Hesper shrieked, clutching his embroidered robes. "The vegetative ley lines! Look at Sector Nine! The spiritual aura of the Seventh Spire’s soil has spiked by fourteen thousand percent!"

Chancellor Valen rushed to the balcony, his jaw dropping as he inhaled deeply through his nose.

The wind drifting across the valleys did not smell of sulfur or war.

It smelled of roasted chestnuts, warm honey, and sweet, crisp mountain radishes.

"What... what elixir has he refined?!" Valen stammered, his eyes wide with frantic bewilderment. "Did Senior Felix open an ancient cauldron from the Age of the Gods?!"

"No, Chancellor!" a young diviner gasped, checking the scrying mirror. "He... he didn't use a cauldron! The Ghost King Lord Nether-Bane combined extra-planar void sludge with river loam! They have cultivated Twelve-Star Primordial Sun-Radishes! And Senior Felix just sliced one with an iron kitchen knife to make cold salad!"

Valen stared at the scrying mirror, watching Felix toss radish slices in a cracked ceramic bowl while humming a tune.

"He makes salad..." Valen whispered, his knees trembling as tears welled in his eyes. "A crop that could restore the severed meridians of an entire empire... and he dresses it with vinegar and sesame seeds as a side dish for his porridge."

Grand Marshal Vane-Talon smiled warmly, taking a small bite of dried beef from his pocket.

"The man understands true luxury, Chancellor," Vane-Talon remarked in his gravelly baritone. "Wars are fought over dirt. True sovereigns cultivate their own gardens."

Back on the porch of Solitude Spire, Felix gave the bowl a final toss and set down his chopsticks.

Beside the porch rail, Lyra Ashford stood with her hands clasped tightly over her chest.

Her lilac eyes were shining with tears of spiritual awe.

'He elevated an ancient ghost king to the rank of Celestial Groundskeeper...' Lyra thought, her heart swelling with devotion. 'He bestowed the Sacred Fruit of the Nine Heavens as a heavenly promotion gift! Senior Brother sees beyond mortal form! To him, even an undead corsair can achieve the Dao through the sacred art of composting!'

She bowed deeply as Felix passed, reverently taking the basket of fresh radishes from Nether-Bane’s trembling hands.

Up on the roof beam, Patriarch Ao Cang opened both golden eyes, peering down at the glowing garden bed.

The ancient dragon let out a low rumble of approval, his black tail curling protectively around the downspout.

Beside him, Barnaby the Clockwork Owl puffed out his polished brass chest.

The black rubber stopper in his beak squeaked gently as his internal chronometer clicked in atomic harmony.

*Tick... tock... click.*

The garden was thriving.

The vegetables were twelve-star masterworks.

And Solitude Spire had the happiest groundskeeper in all of creation.
