Yan returned to the banquet room with Zhao. The clerk waited beside the table, where the unsigned contract still lay open. Zhao pointed to a chair but did not sit.
“If you still have questions, ask them,” he said. “The offer has been reviewed by the laboratory and the labor office.”
“Who reviewed it?”
Shen answered. “The laboratory’s compliance department and the labor office.”
“I asked for a name.”
“The department title is what appears on the approval record.”
“Was it one person, or a committee?”
Shen looked at the page. “The contract does not say.”
